The 2026 box office kicked off the same way 2025 ended, with Avatar: Fire & Ash holding court at #1. The third film in James Cameron’s blockbuster sci-fi action franchise held onto #1 without any newcomers to stand in its way, grossing $40 million. That’s down just 37% from last weekend’s take.

The hold is not surprising; this is the way the holiday frames go. In fact, Avatar: The Way Of Water was actually up in its third weekend. While Fire & Ash didn’t pull that trick off, it’s still in fine shape. The film now has $306 million domestically and $1.083 billion worldwide, with little sign of heavy drop-offs on the horizon yet. While it’s not going to be the absolute juggernaut that Way Of Water and the first Avatar were, it will be profitable for 20th Century Studios and is looking at around $370 million or more. The overseas numbers are pushing it well into profit, even against a $400 million budget.

Zootopia 2 continues to excel, as it dropped a mere 4% in its sixth weekend. The Disney Animation sequel brought in another $19 million, bringing its totals to $363.6 million stateside and $1.588 billion worldwide. The movie has passed its predecessor in every respect at this point and is a massive hit against a $150 million budget. The film is going to continue doing well and has a legitimate shot at $400 million back by the time it leaves theaters.

The best hold in the top 10 belonged to The Housemaid. The Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried-starring thriller was down just 3% to $14.9 million in its third weekend. As of now, the movie has totaled $75.7 million in the US and $133 million globally, making it a profitable venture for Lionsgate at a budget of just $35 million. It is Sweeney’s highest grosser with ease since Anyone But You ($88.3 million, which it will pass), Seyfried’s biggest since Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again in 2018 ($120.6 million), and Feig’s biggest since the 2016 Ghostbusters ($128.4 million). The film could easily top $100 million domestically unless it starts to drop off heavily next weekend.

Marty Supreme was down 29% in its second weekend of wide release. The sports drama took in a solid $12.6 million, putting it at $56 million domestically thus far. It has yet to platform up overseas, where it has $2 million for a $58 million worldwide total, but those international numbers will come. Marty Supreme will likely be a major Oscar player, and that will help carry it as high as $85 million or so in the US. Its budget is $65 million, meaning that the international numbers will be important to its profit margin. Still, A24 is happy with this one right now.

Anaconda dipped a solid 31% in its second weekend to take in $10 million. The meta comedy sequel played fairly well throughout the week and is now at $45.9 million domestically and $88.4 million worldwide. Those are very decent numbers against a $45 million budget. Expect this one to finish out around $65 million to $70 million in the US, more than enough for profit when overseas revenue is counted in.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants eased 26% in its third weekend for $8.2 million. Paramount’s family film is showing its legs with $57.6 million in the US and $112.3 million worldwide, quite tolerable against a $64 million budget. It’s looking increasingly likely to top $70 million or so in the US, good enough for profit.

Angel Studios’ David was off 36% its third weekend to gross $8 million. The animated Biblical tale is doing very well with $70.1 million in the US and $70.4 million worldwide. The film reportedly cost about $61 million but most of that was crowdfunded, which of course means that it’s already quite profitable. It should finish off with about $80 million. That would make it the studios’ second highest grossing film behind Sound of Freedom.

Song Sung Blue was down just 18% in its second weekend with $5.8 million, a welcome sign for Focus Features after the film’s mild start. The Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson-led drama is looking to be doing okay with $24.9 million domestically and $30.1 million worldwide against a $30 million budget. It will need the foreign numbers to come in a bit stronger, but domestically it should close around $35 million.

Wicked: For Good brought in $3.3 million in its seventh weekend, down 39% from last weekend’s take. The sequel now has $339.9 million stateside and $518.4 million worldwide. It’s a hit and looking at about $350 million in the US as an endgame.

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 closed out the top 10 with $2.7 million, also down 39% in its fifth frame. The PG-13 horror film has $125.2 domestically and $231.5 million worldwide as it winds down, a good hit against a $51 million budget. It will end around $130 million.

We will have new releases next week, but Avatar will continue to reign. The new arrivals include the Gerard Butler action sequel Greenland 2: Migration, which is targeting $10 million to $15 million, and horror thriller Primate which is hoping for $10 million. Angel Studios’ I Was a Stranger will be in the single digits.
