Terence Winter won’t be taking a trip to Gotham City after all, exiting the upcoming The Batman spinoff series. THR reports that the Boardwalk Empire creator has exited the HBO Max series due to creative differences with The Batman director Matt Reeves and the other producers.

Winter was set to write and serve as showrunner on the as-yet-untitled series, which would be set in the same world as Reeves’ upcoming film and be focused on the Gotham City Police Department. Reeves noted at DC FanDome that the show would be set in the Year One era, before the film. He said, “The idea is we go back to Year One. Year One is the beginning, it’s the first appearance of this masked vigilante that unsettles the city. You start to see the story through the point of view of these corrupt cops and one in particular. The story is actually a battle for his soul. He’s a cop over generations and the history of corruption in Gotham is enormous and goes back many years.”

Reeves and company are already on the hunt for a new writer and showrunner for the show, which is the first in Reeves’ overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group.
