Latest Backstage Update on AEW Redemption Card

So what’s the AEW Redemption main event going to be? It’s only a couple weeks away and already there has been some reshuffling behind the scenes.

Per Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original plan was for Kenny Omega vs. MJF, with the stipulation that it would be Omega’s last ever shot if he lost. That got moved to Dynamite, apparently at MJF’s urging. As Meltzer notes, “Tony Khan approved of it. So he must feel he’s got something PPV worthy for Montreal.”

So who’s up to face Omega? Andrade, Kevin Knight, and Mike Bailey have apparently been talked about for title shots, but really only Andrade is a potential PPV headliner from those three. Kyle Fletcher is on a hot streak, and Kazuchika Okada holds a victory over Omega at All In, so a rematch for the title would make storyline sense.

MJF and Will Ospreay seem to be headed for a confrontation, but putting a title shot on the line might slow Wembley sales by putting any doubt on an expected Ospreay main event vs. Omega, according to Meltzer, who says numbers have not been “knocking them dead.” His speculation is that Omega as champion could ask for Adam Page’s no-rematch clause from his last MJF battle to be rescinded, and set up Page vs. MJF for Wembley, building to an Omega vs. MJF rematch.

Meltzer also predicts Cope and Christian versus the Young Bucks for Montreal, while admitting there’s little time to build that (or any other match), and Megan Bayne & Lena Kross defending the tag titles against Skye Blue & Julia Hart.
