Evil Dead Rise is set to begin filming before the year is up, according to Bruce Campbell. Campbell, who is producing the latest film in the franchise, spoke with Knox News and confirmed that the movie will begin production in 2021.

“Planning to shoot the next Evil Dead movie in New Zealand later this year,” Campbell said. “[It’s] set in a modern-day urban setting. It’s out of the woods.”

Cambpell will not be reprising his role as Ash Williams in the film, which is said to take place in a high rise. The new film will feature a female hero and will change things up as the Necronomicon falls into other hands.

“The main key with Evil Dead is they’re just regular people who are battling what seems to be an unstoppable evil, and so that’s where the horror comes from,” Campbell told the site. “It’s not someone who’s skilled. They’re not fighting a soldier. They’re not fighting a scientist. They’re not fighting anybody more than your average neighbor. This one is going to be a similar thing. We’re going to have a heroine, a woman in charge, and she’s going to try and save her family.”

The film will be the first in the series since 2013’s Evil Dead, which served as a soft reboot for the franchise.
