Daredevil Was Netflix’s Fourth-Most Popular Show Before Cancellation
Deadline reports that Netflix has seemingly cancelled Daredevil in spite of the fact it was the fourth-most popular show on the service, according to viewer demand statistics from Parrot Analytics. The show was ranked at #4 last week in viewer demand for all digital originals on all streaming platforms, behind Netflix’s other shows Narcos, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Stranger Things. The chart measures “desire, engagement and viewership” with weighted values that give more value to the total “likes” a show gets but not as much as the total number of viewings.
Netflix cancelled the show on November 29, and finished the month with around thirty million “demand expressions,” more than Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Netflix shows like The Last Kingdom, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. The third season of the series debuted this past October to positive reviews.
The decision made by Netflix is believed to be a financial one, as they paid for production costs of Daredevil but had no ownership in the IP. This is in addition to the fact that Marvel’s parent company Disney will launch Disney+ next year. Disney is also planning to remove its past and present content from Netflix. Daredevil joins Iron Fist and Luke Cage among Marvel’s cancelled Netflix shows. Only Jessica Jones and The Punisher are coming back. Marvel has also said that Daredevil‘s adventures will continue but did not specify.
