Dark Phoenix Reshoots Had to Change Finale Due to Similarity To Recent Superhero Movie

According to James McAvoy, the hefty reshoots for Dark Phoenix were done because of the film’s similarity to another, unnamed superhero film. McAvoy and Michael Fassbender spoke with Yahoo! Movies UK and revealed that the film’s original ending — which was set in space — was changed in order to avoid that similarity.

“The end [of Dark Phoenix] changed a hell of a lot,” said McAvoy. “The finale HAD to change. There was a lot of overlap and parallels with another superhero movie that came out re … a while ago.”

While McAvoy doesn’t say what film he was referring to, the obvious potential culprit is Captain Marvel, which also saw its finale set in space. Thor: Ragnarok is also a possibility, having released while the film was in production, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and both containing big space-set sequences.

Dark Phoenix is set to release on June 7th.
