For the moment at least, Hellboy’s mission is over. David Harbour confirmed that a sequel to the recent reboot isn’t currently in the works during an interview with ComicBook.com. Lionsgate had hopes that their reboot of the franchise, which starred Harbour as the titular character, would spawn a new franchise. However, the film’s poor showing with critics, fans and the box office has killed that possibility.

“I don’t think there’ll be much of a light,” Harbour said. “There’s a lot of people who reach out to me who really loved it and really enjoyed the new take, and were just happy to see him back on the screen, but I know in the culture at large, I don’t think it was very well received. I don’t think it made a lot of money. I don’t really keep up with those things too much to be honest, but I don’t think the perception was that it was a hit, and so in that way, I don’t know that the risk is worth it. I think the idea is to move on. The producers spoke to me just saying ‘Great job,’ they really liked what I did, but I haven’t heard anything about a sequel, and I’m not hanging my hat on anything like that.”

Harbour isn’t wrong about the film not making money; quite the contrary, in fact. Hellboy bombed in its first weekend with just $12 million, then fell 67% and a stunning 90% in its second and third weekends (the latter facilitated by it losing most of its screens). The film ultimately made just $21.9 million domestically and $44.7 million worldwide, making it a big money loser against its $50 million production budget and an expensive marketing campaign.

Meanwhile, Harbour can be seen in the third season of Stranger Things which debuts on Netflix on July 4th.
