Disney Sets August Theatrical Release For The New Mutants
Here we go again: Disney has a new theatrical release date for The New Mutants, and it’s late summer. The studio announced on Wednesday that the long-delayed X-Men horror film will release on August 28th, making it (currently) the only film set to release in the pre-Labor Day weekend.
The release date is the latest in a long line of dates set for the film, which has been plagued by delays due to a variety of factors. First came Fox’s desire to do reshoots, which pushed it from a April 13th, 2018 release date to February of 2019. There were scheduling difficulties in bringing the cast back due to commitments to other projects and then the purchase of Fox to Disney caused a host of delays.
Disney was ultimately happy with writer-director Josh Boone’s first cut of the film and set it for an April 2020 release date. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 that caused the shutdown of theaters forced another delay. There were rumors that it might go to Disney+ or Hulu, but those proved unfounded and the film will now finally (assuming no further delays) see a release.
The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, and Alice Braga and is loosely based on Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz’s beloved “Demon Bear” saga. It is described as follows:
Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.
