Disney CEO Bob Iger Says Deadpool Films Will Continue
Disney’s recent buyout of 20th Century Fox has raised a lot of questions and concerns about the future of the X-Men film franchise and its spinoffs, such as the Deadpool film series. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that the Deadpool franchise will continue under the era of Fox owned by Disney during a recent Q1 earnings call (via Collider).
Iger stated on the subject of Deadpool and R-rated films, “We see that there is certainly popularity amongst Marvel fans for the R-rated Deadpool films. We’re going to continue in that business, and there might be room for more of that.”
It makes sense that Disney would want the Deadpool films to continue. Each film made over $780 million at the worldwide box office, despite the R-rating. In the past, Disney has not released R-rated films under the Disney label. In the past, Disney has released edgier, R-rated films under other studio banners like Touchstone Pictures.
As of now, the Fox acquisition is not yet complete. So, the House of Mouse’s handling of the Deadpool and X-Men series still remains to be seen. Additionally, 20th Century Fox released a PG-13 version of the R-rated Deadpool 2 last month with the film Once Upon a Deadpool.
