John Wick: Chapter 4 is getting another action icon to its cast in Donnie Yen. Lionsgate has announced that Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, IP Man, Blade II has signed onto an role in the fourth entry of the franchise. He joins a cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Rina Sawayama in the action sequel, which Chad Stahelski is directing.

According to Deadline, Yen will play “an old friend of John Wick, who shares his same history and many of the same enemies.” Plot details on the film have yet to be released, though it is expected to see Reeves’ John and Fishburne’s Bowery King to team up and get payback against the High Table, who labeled Wick an enemy to be hunted for killing a High Table crime lord on the sacred grounds of the Continental in John Wick: Chapter 2. John found himself betrayed by Ian McShane’s Winston at the end of Chapter 3 and left for dead, after which he was saved by the Bowery King.

“We are very lucky to have Donnie Yen join the franchise,” said Stahelski to Deadline. “I am looking forward to working with him in this exciting new role.”

The new film was written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch and will begin shooting this summer on location in France, Germany, and Japan with a May 27th, 2022 release date planned.
