Emmys 2020

The 72nd annual Emmy Awards saw was dominated by three shows as Schitt’s Creek, Watchmen, and Succession took home the top awards. Schitt’s Creek was the dominant winner of the night with seven Primetime Emmy Awards given out during the telecast. The Pop TV series swept the comedy awards shown on the telecast and set a record for most wins for a comedy in a single year with a total of nine thanks to Creative Arts Emmy wins for Outstanding Contemporary Costumes and Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series. It is the first show to sweep all the comedy awards on the telecast in history.

Outside of the Pop TV show, it was HBO for most of the night. Watchmen topped the award count for Limited Series and TV Movie with four, the same number of wins Succession picked up in the Drama category. Watchmen won for Outstanding Limited Series, Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie (Regina King), Writing for a Limited Series or Movie (Damon Lindelof & Cord Jefferson), and Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Succession took home wins for Outstanding Drama, Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Jeremy Strong), Writing For a Drama Series (Jesse Armstrong), and Directing For a Drama Series (Andrij Parekh).

HBO also got wins for Euphoria, where Zendaya won Best Lead Actress in a minor upset; Last Week Tonight With John Oliver winning Outstanding Variety Talk Series; and Mark Ruffalo taking home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie: for I Know This Much Is True. That gave the network 11 wins in total, the most of any network for the night. The only network aside from HBO and Pop TV to win more than one was Netflix, who took home wins for Outstanding Directing For a Limited Series for Unorthodox (Maria Schrader) and Supporting Actress in a Drama for Ozark’s Julia Garner. Ozark was nominated for the third-most awards at nine, but only won the one.
