Francis Lawrence Says Constantine 2 Is Resuming Development Soon
Francis Lawrence has given an update on the Constantine sequel, saying development on the film will pick back up shortly. As previously reported, Lawrence — who directed the original film — has been talking with star Keanu Reeves and producer Akiva Goldsman about the sequel and he said in an interview with THR that they plan to “dig back in” starting after the holiday weekend.
“It’s still the very beginning, as the strike put it on hold for a little bit,” Lawrence told the outlet. “So we’re probably going to start getting back together after Thanksgiving and dig back in to try and crack it.”
Lawrence added that the film has had several obstacles on the way to where it currently stands, noting, “Me, Keanu, Akiva [Goldsman] have tried over the years to wrangle some control of the character again because it had been handed over. I think NBC did a TV show, and then J.J. [Abrams] was going to try and do something. And then the regime at DC changed, and they’ve got their plans. But luckily, we managed to wrangle some control and started working on some ideas for Constantine 2, which we’re really excited about.”
The 2005 original saw Reeves play the famous DC Comics street sorcerer. The film also starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LeBeouf, Djimon Hounsou, Tilda Swinton, Peter Stormare, and Gavin Rossdale and grossed $230.9 million worldwide against a $70 million to $100 million budget. The sequel, which has long been hoped on the filmmakers’ wishlist, began development back in September of 2022.
