The 81st Annual Golden Globes aired on Sunday night with Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Succession leading the way. Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer pic won the most awards of the night with five statuettes, taking home the wins for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Actor – Drama (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.) and Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson). The row of wins gives the box office and critical smash a load of momentum as award season kicks off in a big way, setting the narrative heading as Hollywood trucks along toward the Oscars.

Oppenheimer’s biggest competition coming out of the night is Poor Things, which took home two awards with Best Comedy or Musical and Best Actress – Comedy or Musical for Emma Stone. Yorgos Lanthimos’s eclectic fantasy comedy has been tipped as a heavy awards contender and it strengthened its position for a showdown with Oppenheimer in the weeks to come.

The two films led to other big awards contenders like Killers of the Flower Moon and Barbie getting relegated to lesser win counts; Barbie picked up two awards including Best Original Song and the new Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement awards, while Flower Moon won just one award for Lily Gladstone’s Best Lead Actress – Drama performance, setting up a likely two-person race with Stone for that Academy Award. The Holdovers also picked up two wins with awards for Best Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical (Paul Giamatti).

On the TV side, Succession took home the most awards with four, dominating the Drama category with wins for Best TV Drama, Best Actress (Sarah Snook), Best Actor (Kieran Culkin), and Best Supporting Actor (Matthew Macfadyen). The Bear and Beef were right behind with three awards. Beef won Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television, Best Actor for the same (Steven Yuen), and Best Actress (Ali Wong). The Bear took home Best TV Series – Comedy or Musical, Best Actress in a Comedy Or Musical (Ayo Edebiri), and Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical (Jeremy Allen White).
