James Spader is returning to the MCU, reprising his role as Ultron for the upcoming Vision series. THR reports that Spader is returning to voice the role of the AI threat in the upcoming Disney+ series, which will see Paul Bettany return as the titular synthezoid.

Spader first played the role in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ultron was an AI created by Tony Stark as an early warning defense system against Thanos but upon attaining sentience, he turned against his creators as he thought the inevitable fate of mankind was devastation. Ultron created Vision, who was given life when Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. AI was uploaded into the synthetic body and empowered through the Mind Stone.

Ultron’s final body was destroyed at the end of the film with his only consciousness inside, and it’s not clear how he will return. Of course, Vision was also destroyed himself — by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War — but he was resurrected through Scarlet Witch’s powers and transferred his memories into a new version of himself.

Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard) is creating the series, which will be the third part of a trilogy of shows alongside WandaVision and the upcoming Agatha All Along. Vision is set to shoot in early 2025 in England.
