Jason Blum Confirms ‘Active Development’ on Spawn Reboot
Jason Blum has confirmed that Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot is moving ahead at Blumhouse, with plenty of “active development.” Blum spoke with ComicBook.com about the long-in-development film, which will be directed by McFarlane in his first film behind the camera, and said that he’s been very busy with developments on plans for the film.
“There has been an enormous amount of activity on Spawn,” Blum said. “No new news that I’m going to reveal here, I’m sorry to tell you, but the title ‘Spawn,’ I’ve been uttering that word a lot in the last two or three weeks and we’ll have more news to come. But, suffice it to say, it is a very active development.”
Blum joked when asked if he’s just been saying “Spawn” while stuck inside his house due to the pandemic, “I wanna make the movie so badly, I wouldn’t put that past myself, and it’s an excellent question, but in this case, I’ve actually been talking to other people about it, but there’s been a seismic event on Spawn.”
The reboot has been in development for three years now at Blumhouse with McFarlane set to direct. Just over a year ago, McFarlane said that he was trying to line up financing that would allow him to maintain the creative vision of his script without changes that would compromise it, noting:
“The money’s sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their hands to the same script. As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. You just go and trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I’m trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I’ll just walk away from it all.”
Jamie Foxx is set to play the title role, with Jeremy Renner attached to play Twitch Williams.
