Kevin Smith Says Dogma 2 In The Works, Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Returning

Kevin Smith is hitting the button on the Apocalypse again, revealing that a Dogma sequel is in the works with Ben Affleck & Matt Damon returning. Deadline reports that Smith revealed during Vulture Festival on Sunday that a follow-up to his 1999 religious comedy is moving ahead and that Affleck and Damon will appear in the film in “more than a cameo.”

Smith said, “Some people will be like, ‘Don’t f**king touch it. You’ll ruin it.’ And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m f**king tickled. I found a way in.”

He went on to say of Affleck and Damon, who played fallen angles Bartleby and Loki in the film, “I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 f**king years, which is why they keep showing up in all the movies. Expect a cameo from them — more than a f**king cameo. The only way we get a Dogma sequel made is if they’re there. So count on those guys being there.”

The original comedy centered on a plan by the two angels to exploit a loophole in Catholic dogma to return to Heaven, which in turn threatened all Creation. It falls upon Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), an abortion counselor who is unknowingly the “last scion,” to stop the angels with the help of the Metatron (Alan Rickman), Rufus the Thirteenth Apostle (Chris Rock), and — of course — Jay & Silent Bob.

The film was a financial success upon its release but attracted significant controversy from Catholic organizations, with Smith receiving multiple death threats and organized protests. Despite a positive reputation and a successful box office run ($43.9 million against a $10 million budget) as well as home video success, the film has been unavailable for years due to the rights being owned by the Weinsteins, who refused to put it on streaming or digital. Smith confirmed in October that the rights had been bought away from Weinstein, and he plans to give it a theatrical re-release and put it back out on home video.
