It seems that one way or another you will see Toxie return for a new movie. Two years after there were talks of a remake of The Toxic Avenger directed by Sausage Party‘s Conrad Vernon, new talk of a reboot with franchise material has started. Deadline reports that Legendary Entertainment has acquired the feature film rights for the violent R-rated superhero that was originally created by Troma in 1984. That film starred Mitch Cohen as the titular monster hero. It was followed by three sequels, a stage musical, a cartoon for kids (no, seriously) and a comic from Marvel.

Original film directors Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will return to produce the remake, with Legendary’s Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter also producing.

The film follows Melvin, a 98-pound nerd working as a janitor at the Tromaville Health Club. He’s picked on by the gym’s clients until one day they go too far and Melvin ends up in a barrel of toxic waste, transforming him into the Toxic Avenger, a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength. Along the way Toxie becomes a hero, falls in love and cleans up Tromaville by savagely murdering the town’s criminals.
