The Jaegers are set to go back into battle, with Legendary Entertainment developing a Pacific Rim origin series. Deadline reports that the studio has become work on a prequel series to the Guillermo Del Toro sci-fi action film and its sequel, with Eric Heisserer (Shadow and Bone) behind the project.

The project is part of a first-look deal that Heisserer’s Chronology production banner has signed with Legendary. Plot details have yet to emerge on the series.

“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” said Jason Clodfelter, President of Legendary Television. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe.”

Pacific Rim was directed by Del Toro and released in 2013. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day, the film told of a war between humanity and kaiju that saw mankind develop massive mecha suits to even the odds. The film disappointed domestically but was successful thanks to overseas numbers and a sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, was released in 2018 but failed to net a profit. The franchise has been expanded with a two-season anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black that aired on Netflix.
