Legendary Lands Film and TV Rights For Street Fighter Franchise
Street Fighter will get at least another round in live action, and Legendary Entertainment have come on board. Variety reports that Legendary has picked up the film and TV rights to the iconic video game franchise and will co-develop and produce any upcoming projects, which includes a feature film already in the works.
The Street Fighter franchise has been a lucrative one in terms of video games, but it has sputtered on the big screen. The 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia was a failure with critics and didn’t meet commercial expectations despite being profitable, and the 2009 Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li fared even worse with just $12.8 million worldwide against a $50 million budget.
Legendary has a new distribution deal with Sony after recently parting ways with Warner Bros, who will still distribute the studio’s Dune: Part Two in November.
