Luke Cage is following his fellow Hero For Hire off Netflix. Netflix announced on Friday night that the Marvel series will not return for a third season. The surprising news comes via a statement to Deadline which read:

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

The news is surprising because Netflix had ordered scripts for the third season, with six months of work being done by the writer’s room, and a renewal announcement was said to be expected any day. Deadline reports that the decision came down to creative differences between Netflix and Marvel, with discussions about the season’s length causing some turmoil as well. Ultimately, the two sides were unable to work things out.

There are currently no plans to resurrect the series on Disney’s streaming service launching next year, although viewership would not be a concern. When season one of Luke Cage launched, it was responsible for crashing the service’s servers and season two was reportedly very well-watched also. The show has consistently earned critical acclaim as well.

Luke Cage joins Iron Fist as Marvel shows leaving Netflix over the last month. As of now, plans are still on track for a third season of Jessica Jones and a second season of The Punisher. Daredevil launched its third season on Friday.
