Netflix Announces Iron Fist Will Not Get Third Season
Danny Rand’s days as a solo series lead are over. Netflix and Marvel have announced that the series is ending after two seasons. The companies issued a joint statement (per Netflix) that the series is coming to an end following its second season release last month.
The statement read, “Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”
It is important to note a couple of things in that statement. First off, it says that Iron Fist will not return on Netflix, which always leaves open the possibility that it could move over to the Disney streaming service that launches next year. Second, with the final sentence, Netflix and Marvel are suggesting that Danny and Colleen could appear in other shows including a Heroes For Hire series, supporting apperances in the four surviving shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and Luke Cage) or return for a theoretical second season of The Defenders.
If any of the Netflix Marvel shows was going to get canceled, Iron Fist was the obvious choice. It was the least-liked show by a wide margin; the first season was widely panned. The second season was much more warmly received after switching showrunners, but apparently that wasn’t enough to save it.
The site notes that the remaining Netflix Marvel shows are not going anywhere, pointing out that Jessica Jones and The Punisher have already been renewed while Daredevil and Luke Cage are expected to continue. The latter series is expected to get picked up for a third season “any day now.”
