Netflix’s Marvel Shows Unlikely For Disney+ Until At Least 2020

Variety reports that those expecting Disney+ to save the shows cancelled by Netflix, including Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, will have to wait a while. The deal that Disney and Marvel made with Netflix for the original four shows (which also included Jessica Jones), included a clause that stops the characters from appearing in any non-Netflix series or film for at least two years after cancellation. This means that the shows that were cancelled this year couldn’t debut until 2020 at the earliest. It also may explain why none of the character appeared in the MCU’s films.

This poses a different kind of problem for Jessica Jones, which is set to premiere next year. Disney would have to wait until 2021 to use her, which would also leave her out of any potential continuation of The Defenders. That’s assuming Jessica Jones gets cancelled at all, which seems likely given Netflix ending three of their five Marvel shows already, but not confirmed. The original deal was first made in November 2013 and Daredevil was the first show to premiere in April 2015. It included four original shows that would conclude in a miniseries called The Defenders, which eventually aired in 2017.

The Punisher, meanwhile, was not part of the original deal. He first appeared in season two of Daredevil, played by Jon Bernthal, before he got his own show. The show’s second season premieres in January and it’s unknown what could happen if it too is cancelled by Netflix.

It should be noted that the time between seasons of these shows has been over a year in some cases anyway. For example, season two of Jessica Jones premiered three years after the debut of season one. So if Disney wanted to revive the shows, it wouldn’t be a huge stretch to wait until 2020 for their debut.
