It was reported back in March that a new Scream film was set to begin production this month from the directors of the horror hit Ready or Not, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. While production has been postponed for obvious pandemic-related reasons, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some big news to report.

In an interview with Jake Hamilton (via Joblo), Neve Campbell revealed that she is in talks to return for the fifth entry in the series, reprising her role of heroine Sidney Prescott.

She said: “They’ve come to me and we’re having conversations. It’s a little hard at the moment because of COVID to know when that’ll happen and hopefully we can see eye to eye on all the elements that have to come into place for it to happen. I originally had been really apprehensive about doing another Scream without Wes because he was such a genius and he is the reason they are what they are, but the directors have come to me with such a great appreciation for Wes’s work and they really want to honor it and that meant a lot to me. Hopefully we’ll be able to do it.

This seems to confirm that this will not be a reboot of the franchise but another sequel. David Arquette said in an interview last year he would be open to return as Dewey, although he has yet to be cast. With Kevin Williamson executive producing, it seems nearly all the puzzle pieces are in place to continue the main story.

While this is the first Scream without Wes Craven, Ready or Not was beloved by critics and horror fans alike. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that Hayden Panettierre’s Kirby survived the events of Scream 4.
