Sigourney Weaver hasn’t appeared in an Alien movie in almost 30 years, but she says she had a meeting about potentially changing that. The actress, whose career breakout came as Ellen Ripley in 1979’s Alien, revealed at New York Comic Con that she had a meeting about a potential sequel written by franchise producer Walter Hill.

Hill had previously noted that he and David Giller wrote a 50-page treatment for a film that would bring Weaver back as Ripley. Weaver has been hesitant about the notion of reprising the role, but she noted at NYCC that she was impressed by the treatment.

“It’s a very strong first 50 pages,” Weaver said (per ScreenRant). I was always like, ‘Let (Ripley) rest, let her recover.’ But what Walter has written first of all seems so true to me.”

She dropped some hints about what the treatment is, noting, “It’s about a society who would incarcerate someone who’s tried to help mankind but she’s a problem for them… I don’t know if it’s gonna happen but I have had a meeting with Fox, or Disney or whoever it is now.“

Weaver’s last time in the Alien franchise was 1997’s Alien Resurrection, where she played a genetically-engineered clone of the original Ripley who had died at the end of Alien 3. Resurrection was financially successful but a disappointment, and the critic and fan response could be described as polarizing at best.

The franchise has continued without Weaver, including an ill-fated crossover with the Predator franchise that fell apart after two movies and original director Ridley Scott’s prequels Prometheus and Alien Covenant, which were equally polarizing among the franchise’s fans. 2022’s Alien: Romulus proved to be successful with both fans and at the box office. The franchise’s resurgence continued with FX’s Alien: Earth aired over the late summer and fall and was both a critical and viewership success.

Whether Weaver returns or not, it’s unlikely to be in the next film as a sequel to Alien: Romulus is in the works.
