Rob Reiner, the legendary director know for such films as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, and The American President, has reportedly been found dead in his home along with his wife. Deadline reports that two people were found dead in Reiner’s Brentwood mansion in Los Angeles. Law enforcement has not officially disclosed the deceased’s identities, but noted that they were a 78 year-old man and a 68 year-old woman. The ages match those of Reiner and his wife Michele. Deadline has since confirmed with sources that the bodies are of Rob and Michele.
Sources have told Deadline that LAPD homicide detectives are on the scene. The LA Fire Department received a call about an “incident” at about 3:38 PM PT. Authorities have described the situation as a “family incident.” Deadline also notes that it appears the couple died from knife wounds.
Rob Reiner was the son of famed comedian Carl Reiner. He is perhaps best known for his directing career, which began with the iconic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in 1984. But he was also a prolific actor, with roles as Michael Stivic (aka “Meathead”) on All In the Family, Throw Momma from the Train, Sleepless in Seattle, The First Wives Club, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Reiner began his entertainment career with bit parts in TV shows like Batman, Gomer Pyle, and The Beverly Hillbillies. All In the Family pushed him into the mainstream. He won two Emmy Awards for his role on the show, plus three additional Emmy nominations.
Reiner’s focuse shifted to directing with Spinal Tap. He continued acting after his shift to directing, but he became more well known for his work behind the camera. He followed up This Is Spinal Tap with increasing success on film after film with romcom The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men.
After suffering a setback with 1994’s North, which became a commercial and critical bomb, Reiner bounced back. 1995 saw the well-loved political romcom The American President. He followed that up with Ghosts of Mississippi in 1996.
Reiner’s filmography slowed down a little in the 2000s with a rough period that included the flops Rumor Has It… and Alex & Emma. He again bounced back with 2007’s The Bucket List. He continued directing until the end of his life; 2025 saw the release of the long-awaited Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which also saw him reprise his role as Marty DiBergi.
On behalf of 411, our condolences to the family, friends and fans of the Reiners. They will be missed.
