Stephen King says his big horror movie recommendation this year is the Child’s Play remake, and he’s just as surprised as you are. The legendary horror novelist spoke with EW to give his Halloween recommendations and said that while he wasn’t interested in the remake originally, once he saw it he ended up loving it.

“I didn’t go see it in the theaters, because I thought, ‘Well, this is just another warmed-over sequel,'” King said. “Mark Hamill does the voice of Chucky and I just f**king loved that movie. I laughed and I cried at the things in there. Everybody who’s in the movie does a terrific job. It’s a smart script and it’s just a load of fun. It really is. It’s gruesome as hell.”

King goes on to describe one of the scenes in the film (left out here for spoiler purposes) where Chucky causes some carnage and amidst laughter said, “And you know, it’s not funny, but at the same time it is funny.”

Child’s Play released in June and was a bigger success than most expected, scoring fairly positive reviews and bringing in $43.5 million against its $10 million production budget (plus marketing).
