The Grudge Earns $1.8 Million In Thursday Preview Screenings
It remains to be seen if it will dethrone Star Wars by the end of the weekend (probably not), but it has been a solid start for The Grudge. Variety reports that the horror reboot earned $1.8 million from Thursday preview screenings and is expected to earn around $9 million for the weekend. It had a budget of $10 million, so this will be good news for Sony, Screen Gems and Ghost House Pictures.
The reviews have not been kind, however, as has been the case with every American Grudge so far (and even some of the Japanese Ju-On films). It currently has a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. Those who liked it praised the mean-spirited nature of the kills and the performances from cast members like Andrea Rishborough and John Cho. Those who hated it felt there were too many jump scares and felt the pacing was off.
