During the Disney 2023 Annual Meeting of Shareholders Webcast, Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson announced he is teaming with Disney for a live-action remake of Moana. Rock will once again play the demigod Maui, whom he voiced in the 2016 animated film. He noted that he would also pay tribute to his grandfather ‘High Chief’ Peter Maivia in the film, adding it’s early in the process.

He said: “Aloha everyone, from beautiful Hawaii. We are here on the island of O’ahu where I did a lot of my growing up. As you know, Hawaii means so much to my family and the traditions of our ohana, or aīga as we say in Samoa, were shaped by these incredible islands. The Pacific islands and their cultures inspired the very special story, one that you all know very well. And that story is, drumroll please, Moana! That’s right. We are so excited and happy to announce that a live-action reimagining of Moana is in the works. Moana, Grandma Tala, the music, the dance, the pig, the village, beautiful powerful ocean, and one more…what’s that guy..oh! Yours truly, HeiHei the Chicken. Kidding. Heihei’s gonna be in it but of course Maui will be in it too.
