During a recent interview with Undisputed’s Justin Barrasso, AEW wrestler Andrade El Idolo spoke about his goal of winning the AEW World Title and the IWGP Heavyweight Title, what it means to be able to compete in NJPW, and more. Below are some highlights from Undisputed:
Andrade El Ídolo on Wanting To Win the TNA World Title
“That thought has occurred to me on many occasions, I’m looking for that championship. God knows I want it. MJF, I’m looking for an opportunity. That would be incredible. I’d be a fighting champion and defend it against Will Ospreay. I’d defend it against Kenny Omega. Hopefully it is soon, but I will work for it as long as necessary.”
On If He Thinks he Will Win the AEW World Title or IWGP Heavyweight Title First
“Destiny always changes. I don’t have a specific answer. I will be the champion in New Japan and the AEW title, that’s my goal. I keep training and preparing, when my opportunity arrives, I will be ready.”
What It Means for Him to Compete in NJPW
“Japan reminds me of when I started, that’s why it is different there. I am reminded of my hunger, the way I felt at the beginning of my career when I went to Japan as La Sombra and was surrounded by so many legends. A lot of those legends are retired now, but it feels good to be back. The fire still burns. Winning that title was very important. I take being champion very seriously. When I was a young wrestler in Japan, I promised I would return as a superstar. I told myself I would show my talent to the world. It is hard to win a championship in Japan. The opponents there are very harsh. There are incredible wrestlers in the United States, but Japan is different for me because it’s been a personal dream of mine for a long time. Every time I return to Japan, it is incredible.”
On His Plans for 2027
“Next year I plan to travel more around the world, especially in Asia and the indies. Indies know I give it my all, no matter the opponent. My style and preparation allow me to wrestle anyone. I’m still young, but I am aware there are younger wrestlers in their 20s. I am 36, but my maximum is different [from everyone else].”
Andrade El Idolo recently competed in the Death’s Door Cage Match last weekend at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, teaming with MJF, Kevin Knight, Kyle Fletcher, Jake Doyle, and Kazuchika Okada. They ultimately lost the match to Team Briscoe (Mark Briscoe, Orange Cassidy, Roderick Strong, Kyle O’Reilly, Konosuke Takeshita, and Darby Allin).
