Dave Meltzer Comments on Why AEW Opted for Will Ospreay vs. Jon Moxley Over Andrade El Idolo

On last night’s AEW Dynamite, AEW set up a title match between reigning champion Will Ospreay and former champion Jon Moxley at All Out later this month. This is despite Andrade El Idolo earning a future AEW World Title shot at All In: London last weekend with his win in the Casino Gauntlet match. During a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer shared more details on why AEW is opting for a Will Ospreay and Jon Moxley title bout over Andrade.
According to Meltzer, AEW is running with a storyline that Andrade isn’t seeking to cash in his title shot quickly, and he instead wants to continue defending the AEW National Title, which he currently holds. Meltzer explained (via WrestlingInc.com), “The storyline they’re doing is that Andrade isn’t in a hurry to cash in that match and that he’s first looking at making successful title defenses of the National title. So it sounds like it’s not going to be this week or next week or right away, that it may be a little time down [the road].”
Additionally, Meltzer stated that Ospreay versus MJF for the AEW World Title will be a major main event, but he’s unsure when that matchup will take place. Meltzer also speculated that Tony Khan plans to have multiple contenders vying for Ospreay’s world title, similar to how he did with MJF earlier this year.
What’s Next for Andrade El Idolo?
In the main event of last night’s AEW Dynamite, Will Ospreay teamed up with Andrade El Idolo and United Empire to defeat The Dogs and The Demand in a 10-man tag team match. After the match, Andrade and Ospreay had a moment where they shook hands and showed each other mutual respect, with Andrade holding his title contract.
Andrade is next set for action on this weekend’s AEW Collision, where he will defend his National Title against Gabe Kidd. The show airs via tape delay on Saturday, September 5 on TNT at 8:00 pm ET.
Under the rules of his Casino Gauntlet title shot, he must give a week’s notice to cash in his title shot. It’s currently unknown when Andrade plans to cash in his contract, potentially facing Will Ospreay or Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship.
