Ireland could become a contender for a WrestleMania bid in the future, according to a councilor in one of the country’s more popular tourist destinations. Kilkenny councilor Maurice Shortall recently spoke with the Irish Mirror and told the outlet that the country is in a good spot to put in a competitive bid for WrestleMania.
Shortall told the Mirror, “As a globally recognised event with the capacity to attract tens of thousands of international visitors and generate substantial international media exposure, WrestleMania presents a significant opportunity for Ireland to strengthen its position as a leading destination for major event tourism.”
He continued, “The wider regional benefit to counties such as Kilkenny would be substantial, with strong potential for tourism spillover, increased domestic travel, and enhanced international visibility for Ireland’s secondary tourism destinations. Ireland is well placed to present a credible and competitive bid for WrestleMania, given our strong international tourism brand, proven track record in hosting major events, and global reputation as a welcoming destination.”
Kilkenny is Ireland’s 13th largest city, and is a popular tourist destination for such sites as Kilkenny Castle and St. Canice’s Cathedral. To be clear, Shortall is simply talking about future bid potential and makes no indication that a bid has been placed.
WrestleMania has no shortage of potential locations, as it goes international for the first time next year with WrestleMania 43 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The yearly show has a number of suitors for upcoming iterations including Nashville and London, while WWE has already committed future WrestleManias to New Orleans, Louisiana and Indianapolis, Indiana.
