Footage of AEW Crowd Chanting Against ICE Airs on Last Week Tonight

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is one of those shows that isn’t afraid to talk a little pro wrestling or use it to illustrate a greater point. John Cena made an appearance in 2020. WWE’s stance on wrestlers being independent contractors was the topic of a show in 2019. Heck, Vince McMahon’s mustache has made an appearance.

Last night, the show covered the recent events surrounding ICE. Many folks out there have made their feelings about ICE perfectly clear in various venues, including at AEW events during Brody King’s matches. Brody wore an “Abolish ICE” shirt and is contributing to charitable efforts for families affected by ICE involvement. While talking about negative reaction to ICE, John Oliver threw it to footage of King’s match with MJF on Dynamite.

Of course, Last Week Tonight airs on HBO, which is among the properties owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. CNN’s website mentioned that WBD owns a minority stake in AEW over the weekend, which had long been rumored. It remains to be seen how some people will feel about this particular case of co-promotion.
