IWA-MidSouth Ted Petty Invitational Results 9.27.08 – Night Two
Thanks to John Gregory for sending in the following results:
Age of the Fall out first asking if there was anyone who would face them tonight. The Soul Touchaz of Marshe Rockett and Acid Jazz come out and accept their challenge.
1. Age of the Fall def. The Soul Touchaz when Black pinned Rockett with the God’s Last Gift. Good opening match, got crowd pumped.
2. TPI 2nd Round-Egotistico Fantastico def. Josh Raymond with a double springboard moonsault. Plenty of near falls, was most a high flying affair, including Josh going for a corkscrew senton and getting nothing but knees.
3. TPI 2nd Round-Drake Younger def. Michael Elgin via ref stoppage with the ground and pound attack. Much more of a strong style contest, as you would expect from these two. Elgin focused on the leg that 2 Tuff Tony had worked over on Drake the night before. Elgin missed a moonsault, and Drake came up with a straight fist to send him down, and used the ground and pound to end the match.
4. TPI 2nd Round-Claudio Castagnoli def. Dave Taylor with a backslide. Very European-styled hold-for-hold wrestling, with Claudio keeping step with a master in that regard. Claudio got the win with a surprise backslide after Taylor missed a European uppercut. Crowd loved Taylor, and he gets a huge “Please Come Back” chant.
5. TPI 2nd Round-Sara Del Rey def. Cassandro with a cross armbreaker. Great match, very lucha styled. Crowd loved both participants and Cassandro impressed everyone in the crowd. Finish came when Cassandro charged into the ring post and then tapped out after that.
6. TPI 2nd Round-2 Cold Scorpio def. Ace Steel with a pinning combination. In my opinion, worst match of the night, only because of a few glaring mistakes by Ace. He still got a “Thank you” chant at the end.
7. TPI 2nd Round-Sami Callahan def. Eddie Kingston with a lariat. It’s absolute madness how much these guys beat on each other. Callahan was too tough for Kingston to put away, and Callahan upsets who many thought would be a lock to be in the finals.
8. IWA Light Heavyweight Title Match, Steel Cage I Quit Match: Jason Hades retains against Jayson Quick. These two were crazy. A bunch of chairshots, both men bled a lot. Scary moment of the night came when Quick took a GERMAN SUPERPLEX FROM THE VERY TOP ROPE RIGHT ON HIS HEAD. He was perfectly fine and I have no idea how. Finish came when Hades jabbed a spike into Quick’s forehead in very Tully/Magnum fashion and Quick quit. Great match, the hardcore portion of the evening.
9. TPI Semis-Drake Younger def. Egotistico Fantastico with an inverted brainbuster. Drake limped out but still pulled out the win by sheer will. He kicked out of Ego’s double springboard moonsault, and when Ego avoided the Vertebreaker, Drake hit a devasting inverted brainbuster to pick up the win and move to the finals.
10. TPI Semis-Claudio Castagnoli def. Sara Del Rey with the Ricola Bomb. No hesitation by either one to hit the other hard. Crowd was chanting for a Del Rey win with a cross armbreaker but Claudio won with a big boot then a Ricola Bomb.
11. TPI Semis-Sami Callahan def. 2 Cold Scorpio with a lariat. Match of the night. Scorpio hit Callahan with everything he had and the New Horror would not stay down. After 15 minutes of 2 Cold dominating, Callahan hits two straight Saito Suplexes and his trademark lariat to pull off a huge upset that shocked the crowd. He is near tears after the exhausting match, telling Scorpio “I gave you everything I had.”
12. Dingo, Ricochet, and Bobby Fish def. 2 Tuff Tony, Prince Mustafa Ali, and Ares w/Joey Eastman. Eastman trades Bobby Fish to the other team in exchange for 2 Tuff Tony and a bag of weed. Yeah, it’s the annual comedy match. The heels beat on Ricochet, and every time Eastman gets involved, Bobby Fish stole a piece of his clothing until he was wearing Joey’s entire outfit and Eastman was left in his underwear. They go up for a Tower of Doom, and everyone, including Eastman and the ref, gets hit in the balls. Ali then tries to ignite a SHOE BOMB and everyone gangs up on him. Ali then misses a splash and Dingo rolls him up for the win.
13. Falls Count Anywhere: Trik Davis def. Chris Hero. Crowd hates Trik Davis just like the night before. They brawl everywhere. Hero hit a blockbuster onto a bed of chairs on the floor. Stiff headbutts near the end lead to Trik kicking a chair into Hero’s crotch and then punting Hero in the family jewels.
14. TPI Finals, Elimination 3-Way: Drake Younger def. Claudio Castagnoli and Sami Callahan to win the 2008 TPI. Claudio takes Sami outside early and giant swings him into the chairs. Drake eliminates him with the Vertebreaker. Claudio works over that leg repeatedly but Drake won’t tap out. Drake hits the Vertebreaker for the win.
The locker room comes out to congratulate Drake. Ian makes a short speech and the crowd chants for Drake.
An absolutely wonderful show, like the TPI always is. The star power wasn’t there on paper, but the crew of IWA regulars and semi-regulars put on one of the best shows of the year here. Must-buy DVD for sure, as there’s something for everyone.
