Jim Ross Praises Tony Khan’s Bold Decision To Make Darby Allin World Champion

On a recent episode of his podcast, Grilling JR, Jim Ross discussed Darby Allin winning the AEW World Championship on Wednesday night’s Dynamite Spring Break episode in Everett, Washington, defeating MJF in the main event. Ross reflected on Allin’s journey and what the title win means for AEW going forward. Here are the highlights:
On being proud of Allin:
“Man, couldn’t be more proud of somebody who’s a great kid. He’s an overachiever. Goddamn, he don’t weigh 200 pounds, so I’m happy for him. He works hard. He takes too many chances, in my opinion. But needless to say, he’s going to be a great representative going forward for AEW. He’s reliable and he’s unpredictable, all the good things he’s got.”
On Tony Khan’s bold move:
“Took a chance in that respect. It’s going to pay off for him. I hope it’s a bold move. But look, if you’re going to do it, what better place to do it than have the new champion to win in his hometown? And I think that’s smart booking. It’s been tried and true. It’s been utilized for years and decades. Sometimes when a challenger rolls through his hometown and gets a shot at the title, at the strap Conrad, God knows we’ve got to have more strap mentions, it’s a smart move. I’m proud of Tony Khan for being bold and going that way, and I’m really happy for Darby Allin, who finally gets a few flowers on that mantle, and I hope that he can make the most of it, and for him, stay healthy. Just stay healthy. And that’s easier said than done, because of the way that Darby wrestles.”
