Darby Allin stunned the world — and particularly MJF — by defeating the latter for the AEW World Championship on this week’s AEW Dynamite. Allin defeated his fellow AEW pillar for the title in the main event of Wednesday night’s show.

At the start of the show, MJF arrived and found out he was defending his title against Allin as was announced by Tony Khan during the AEW Dynasty post-show media scrum. MJF, who had left before the announcement, was livid. He came to the ring to threaten to sue everyone and said Allin was not championship material, putting over that he had just had a brutal match with Kenny Omega that went 40 minutes at Dynasty a few days ago. Allin said all it takes is one night and it can happen. Bryan Danielson then came out with a message from Tony Khan and said that MJF would get until the end of the show to prepare for the match. Allin then vowed to win with a side headlock.

Just before the match, Allin was walking to the ring and Sting showed up to give Allin moral support. The match itself happened in short order, with MJF quickly hitting a low blow kick behind the ref’s back. He went for a headlock takeover but Allin got free. MJF nearly hit the ref and Allin used the moment for his own low blow. He then hit a Coffin Drop off each corner and took MJF over with the side headlock takedown for the pinfall and title.

You can see highlights from the segments and match below. After the match, Sting and the AEW locker room came out to celebrate with Allin.

This marks Allin’s first run with the AEW World Champion; he is a former two-time AEW TNT Champion and a former World Tag Team Champion. MJF’s reign, his second, neds at 109 days. He beat Samoa Joe for the title at AEW Worlds End in a match that also featured Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland. Including tonight’s match, he defended the title seven times.
