Kevin Kay says that his first meeting with Vince McMahon as the head of Spike TV resulted in a bathroom “power move” on the part of McMahon. Kay became the President at Spike TV when it rebranded from TNN, coming into the job with a litany of experience on shows like Late Night with David Letterman and overseeing Nickelodeon, where he greenlit SpongeBob SquarePants. The network already had WWE Raw on board in a deal that was signed in 2000 and lasted to 2005.

Kay spoke with Ariel Helwani for a new interview and recalled his first meeting with McMahon, which took place at a show in Louisville, Kentucky. Kay recalled how he was brought to meet McMahon in the men’s room, where McMahon was using a urinal, and how the then-WWE Chairman zipped up and walked straight up to him to shake his hand without washing them. You can see highlights below:

On His First Time Meeting McMahon:

“So, I’ll tell you a funny story about Vince. So, Jim Burns, who was our executive in charge of production of WWF at the time, said, ‘Now that you’re running this, you need to go meet Vince and pay your respects.’ And I said, ‘Sure. When’s the next show at Madison Square Garden?’ He’s like, ‘No no, they just did that one. That’s not for another year. They do that once a year.’ And I said, ‘Where am I going?’ He said, ‘Louisville.’ So, we went to Louisville. That’s where their next venue was.

“And we went to Louisville and it was an amazing show. I’d never been live to a WWF event, it was spectacular. And then they take me down into the bowels of the stadium to go meet Vince. And there’s a lineup of — you know, it’s in a men’s room. And you know the stadium men’s room, There’s like 50 urinals. Vince is at the very end, urinating. And we’re standing there, and I’m with a couple of the WWF guys and Jim. And Vince is finished and he like zippers up his pants, and he walks straight at me. and he puts out his hand. Total power move… I shook his hand. But what are you going to do? ”

On If He Thinks McMahon Did It On Purpose:

“I think so. I think so. I think it was just like, ‘Yeah, I’m in charge.’ Like, ‘Yeah, you’ll do what I tell you.'”
