Kurt Angle Thinks Main Event Mafia Could Have Been As Big As NWO, Talks Sting As a Heel
On the latest episode of the Kurt Angle Show covering The Main Event Mafia faction in TNA, the WWE Hall of Famer talked about knowing the faction would work, his belief that it had the potential to be as big as NWO, and more. You can check out some highlights below:
On knowing the Main Event Mafia would work: “Yeah, we all knew. It actually worked out even better once we formulated it, and we were like, ‘Holy crap, this thing’s gonna be huge.’ You know, I just don’t think that we gave it enough time. I think if we would’ve let it mature for a while, it would be every bit as big as the NWO. And that’s a stretch… [laughs] Yeah, That’s going viral.”
On what he would’ve changed about the group: “You know what? The only other thing I might have changed was adding another character, another wrestler. And that would be Christian. Because he had a lot of success. He was a world champion. He was in WWE, he was a 20-time tag team champion, World Tag Team Champion. So Christian would have been a good addition that group.”
On getting fans to boo Sting: “Oh God. It was almost impossible. I mean, whenever he would come out alone they were cheering him, you know? When we all came out as a group, they booed us somewhat. But Sting, it was just almost impossible to make him a heel. Almost impossible.”
On Sting as a heel: “I don’t think of Sting as a heel; it just doesn’t happen. You know, he was such a babyface his whole entire career. I don’t even know if he turned heel in WCW, not that I can remember. And you know, it was really difficult for Sting to do this. He took to it pretty well, but I know he was uncomfortable because he’s never done it before, and he was always a babyface, and the people always adored him. The fans loved him. So it was a little difficult, I’d imagine, for Sting to do this.”
