Leighty’s Retro Review: WCW Beach Blast ’92
-We are still in the Bill Watts era and you can tell by the Main Event of this one. Let’s get to it!
-Announce Team: Jim Ross and Jesse Ventura
-June 20, 1992
-Mobile Civic Center, Mobile, AL
-Attendance: 5000
-PPV Buys: 70,000
-Those PPV buys are down 35,000 from WrestleWar and are lowest for any NWA/WCW show up to that point outside of the first Starrcade (where PPV wasn’t really a thing yet).
-Tony Schiavone and Eric Bischoff welcome us to the show and bring in Bill Watts. He puts over the high impact wrestling in WCW and he has always believed in the light heavyweight division. Sure! He also informs us that Paul E Dangerously and Madusa are banned from being at ringside during the Iron Man Match.
-Jim Ross is at ringside and he brings out Jesse “The Body” Ventura who gets his own entrance complete with four women in bikinis. Probably had it in his contract!
WCW World Light Heavyweight Championship: Brian Pillman (c) vs. Scotty Flamingo
-Loose Canon Brian Pillman vs. Raven would have been fun and the promos would have been ever better. Lockup and nothing doing. We go again and Flamingo gets a leg trip and takes a bow. We get some chain wrestling and Pillman ends up with a hammerlock. Flamingo lands a back elbow to the jaw, but Pillman takes him back down with a drop toehold and grabs the hammerlock again. Ventura makes sure to work his traditional joke about Miami (OH) University’s football team. Flamingo misses a clothesline and Pillman gets a crucifix into a sunset flip for two. Flamingo backs off in the corner and lands an elbow to the ribs after his first one was blocked. Pillman floats over in the corner and gets a hip-toss into a short arm scissors. Ugh, the quick timer I fought with in 1989 is back as we are told 5 minutes have passed even though it has only been 3:30. Why is it so hard to keep start and stop a timer? Pillman continues to work the arm as we hit the 5 minute mark for real. Flamingo grabs the ropes to get to his feet, but Pillman maintains the armbar and keeps Flamingo grounded. Scotty scurries to escape, but Pillman counters with a hammerlock. Scotty forces a break in the corner and then goes to the eyes. Pillman with a head scissors and a dropkick that causes Flamingo to get hung up in the ropes. Pillman lets him loose and Scotty falls to the concrete as this is Bill Watts WCW and real men don’t need protective mats. Pillman lands a chop and then heads up top, but that’s illegal in WCW thanks to Watts and I hate that rule. Pillman realizes it and delays which lets Flamingo knock him down. He sends Brian to the floor and follows with a dive over the top. Yeah, that’s legal, but come off the top isn’t. Scott rakes the eyes and comes off the middle ropes with a forearm to the face for two. Pillman lands a sling shot clothesline from the apron, but Scotty cuts him off and goes for an arrogant pin. Pillman counters that into a roll-up for two. Scotty back on him again and gets a reverse chinlock while using the bottom rope for extra leverage. He opts for a pin and gets two before going back to the reverse chinlock. Pillman elbows his way out, but runs into a knee to cut off the comeback again. Flamingo misses a charge in the corner and both men are down. Flaming up first and he goes back to the eyes and then the reverse chinlock. He goes to a straight choke and he has to five. Pillman hooks a sleeper, but Flamingo runs him head first into the top buckle and both men are down again. They each punch other and that means both are down again. They trade punches from their knees and Pillman gets pissed and goes for a choke. Flamingo off the second rope and Pillman catches him with a dropkick on the way down. See, that doesn’t look as good since Flamingo can’t come off the top. Pillman with a spinning heel kick and then unloads with right hands in the corner. Pillman gets a boot up to block a charge, but runs into a power slam for two. Pillman’s knee is buckling so Scotty slaps him in the face and poses on the ropes. Pillman was playing possum and gets a belly-to-back from the second rope for two as Scotty gets his foot on the ropes. Clothesline to the back of the head as this one has picked up nicely. Another clothesline sends Scott over the top and onto the ramp. Pillman goes for a dive over the top, but Scotty moves and PILLMAN GOES HEAD FIRST ON THE RAMP. Ouch! Pillman is toast and Scott hits a knee of the middle ropes for the pin and Championship at 17:29.
Winner and New WCW World Light Heavyweight Champion: Scotty Flamingo via pin at 17:29
-This got really good and I would have liked to see what they could have done if they were allowed to use the top rope. I dug the mat wrestling to start and then things kicked into a higher gear in the last few minutes. The ending was great as Pillman made one big mistake and it cost him seconds later as he could never recover. ***1/2
-Jesse is pissed that Johnny B. Badd is hosting The Bikini Contest.
-Johnny B. Badd is out for the first round of The Bikini Contest. This first round is evening gown. Missy Hyatt is out first and then Madusa, who looks to be waring a wedding gown. The crowd cheer Miss and boos Madusa. Call now to vote!
-Ross hypes The Great American Bash where Sting defends The World Title against Vader.
The Taylor Made Man vs. Ron Simmons
-Ron shoves Terry on his ass to start and he complains about a hair pull. Taylor tries a hiptoss out of the corner, but no dice and then Simmons gets one. Jesse and Ross note that Taylor needs to mat wrestle here. There’s the football background from Ross I was waiting to hear. Simmons runs Taylor over with tackles, but begs off long enough to use the tights to send Simmons to the ramp. Simmons hits a clothesline and Gorilla Press Slam back into the ring. Simmons with a slam and he clubs Taylor to the mat. Bearhug from Simmons! The arm drops twice, but Taylor goes to the eyes to break. Ron counters a hiptoss with one of his own. He charges, but Taylor moves and Ron spills out to the ramp. Jawbreaker from Taylor back in the ring. Neck snap but it’s not Perfect as it only gets two. Reverse chinlock as that’s what this match needed. Back breaker gets a two count. Spinebuster from Ron leaves both men down. He lifts Taylor off the mat with a choke and throws him down. Backdrop followed by a shoulder tackle. Powerslam finishes at 7:10.
Winner: Ron Simmons via pin at 7:10
-Kind of dull and Ron should have SQUASHED him a bit more as the idea was to get a younger guy a win over a veteran. *1/2
-Jim Ross interviews Ron after the match and his goal is still to be the World Champion.
Marcus Alexander Bagwell vs. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine
-This is similar to the last match where again, they want a young star to look good against a veteran. In this case it’s a bonus as it’s a former WWF star and Champion. Lockup and Hammer offers a clean break against the ropes. Bagwell gets a hiptoss, arm-drag and then a slam before posing to the crowd. That draws some boos! Hammer lands a knee to the ribs and drops an elbow as Bagwell set too early on a backdrop. Hammer looks for a piledriver, but Bagwell counters with a backdrop. He goes for a single leg, but Hammer lands an elbow. Bagwell with an atomic drop and then two dropkicks that sends Hammer to the floor. Ross notes Hammer is the Master of the Figure-Four and I assume shots fired at Ric Flair. Hammer fires off chops and drops another elbow. Backbreaker from Hammer and there is a vocal group in the building cheering for him. Hammer misses an elbow off the middle rope and Bagwell gets a slam. Knee drop misses and that’s blood in the water to Hammer. He stomps on the knee and lands a kick. Snapmare, though Bagwell made it look kind of ugly. Hammer slaps him in the face and calls for the Figure Four to the delight of some in the crowd. Bagwell counters with a small package for two, but is hobbling around the ring. Hammer back to the knee, but falls on his ass as Bagwell avoids a move. Roll-up gets two for Bagwell. Back slide gets two! Bagwell blocks a suplex and gets one of his own for two. Backdrop as Bagwell didn’t see too early on this one. Bagwell’s knee gives out trying a leap and Hammer hits a knee breaker. Figure Four is locked in to a solid pop and Bagwell gives up at 7:16.
Winner: Greg Valentine via pin at 7:16
-Sold, old school match as Bagwell injured the knee and Hammer took advantage. Probably good for Bagwell to take a loss as some in the crowd were starting to turn on him. **
Falls Count Anywhere on The Gulf Coast: Cactus Jack vs. Sting
-This is Jack’s first big time match in WCW and while Sting is the World Champion, this isn’t for his Championship. You know how Foley has made a career out of toughening up guys seen as finesse workers? This is the first case and many would follow: Michaels, Rock, HHH, Orton, Edge etc. I have no doubt in my mind if Foley was still in his prime, he would have been Cody’s first challenger post WrestleMania XL. Jack’s not even going to the ring as they start throwing bombs on the ramp. Sting gets a backslide on the ramp just so we know the idea of the match. Backdrop on the ramp because this is Mick Foley. Bulldog on the ramp gets two. Sting runs the ramp and misses a Stinger Splash as he bounces off the ropes. Cactus comes off the apron with an elbow to the ribs. That gets two and that had to suck for Cactus. Neckbreaker on the concrete gets two. Jack off the apron again as he gets a sunset flip for two. Good gracious! Sting fires back and sends Jack into the railing a few times. Jack gets dumped off the railing and they fight in the crowd. Suplex on the concrete as I am shocked Jack didn’t fill up his bump card with just this match. Whip to the railing and of course Jack has to go flying over and splats on the concrete. We hit the ring at the 4 minute mark and Jack hits the discus clothesline. The crowd is rumbling as they stomp their feet to get Sting back into the match. Running knee in the corner as Sting is coming into the match with damaged knees thanks to Vader. Jack hooks a body scissors to work the damaged ribs. Jack slaps Sting in the face, which fires him up and he slugs away in impressive fashion. Cactus clothesline sends both men to the floor. Fantastic! Sting gets sent into the railing, but gets a boot up to block a charge. Jack grabs a chair and dents it on Sting’s back. Another shot as this is heavy stuff for 1992. Here’s another chair shot and a BANG BANG! I’ll say it NINER GANG! Sting back with a belly-to-back suplex on the floor and for good measure, Jack caught some of the railing on the way down. They each land a right hand and Jack falls back for a two count, but Sting rocks back to get his own two count. Stinger Splash but he catches some of the railing. Jack’s knee gives out as he tries a piledriver on the floor. It looked a little wonky, so Sting didn’t sell it as a career killer like it normally would be. Jack off the middle ropes, but he just splats as Sting catches him with a right hand on the way down. Man! They fight on the ramp where Sting gets a slam and now he has the chair. Shot to the back and another as Jack keeps getting to his feet. There’s a shot to the knee and Sting goes for The Scorpion, but Jack rolls off the ramp to the floor to break. DOUBLE ARM DDT ON THE RAMP gets two! Sting with a running clothesline on the ramp and then comes off the top with a clothesline out there for the pin at 11:22.
Winner: Sting via pin at 11:22
-This was wild and just a war. Sting survived this one, but as Jesse noted, Vader had to be smiling somewhere in the back. I’m sure Sting will be fine next month. Foley called this his best match in his book at that point, but noted the Shawn Mind Games match topped it. He has others after that as well. This was the first great Foley match where he killed himself to get not only himself over, but his opponent. Definitely a match to check out. ****1/4
30 Minute Iron Man Challenge: Rick Rude vs. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat
-Dragon has his son with him and Rude approaches him, so Dragon defends his son. Jesse turns it around on Dragon saying he kept his son in the ring so Rude couldn’t attack and then Dragon jumped him. Dragon hits a gut buster and Rude is struggling with the ribs and Dragon goes right after the ribs on the left side. Rude is doing a heck of a job selling the ribs as Steamboat hooks a bear hug and then runs Rude back first into the corner. Rude lands a knee just to get a breather. Oh, I should note they are nice enough to have a timer on the screen counting down the 30 minutes. It makes things easier on me keeping track of the time. Steamboat goes back to the ribs and buries a knee in the ribs while pulling back on Rude’s arm and leg. Ouch! Rude smartly goes to the eyes because he is getting owned here. He tries to kick Dragon away, but he flips over with leg control and turns it into a Boston Crab. Cool! Rude actually taps but that didn’t mean anything other than selling the pain in 1992. Steamboat transitions into a kind of early version of the Walls of Jericho and then back to a standard Boston Crab. I can appreciate the start here as Rude got injured early and Steamboat is attacking like a mad man. Rude gets to the ropes, but Dragon pulls him back and then hits a splash on the back. He buries a series of knees as Rude is coming off as a big time face here while Dragon is kind of crazed. Steamboat yells for him to get up and kicks at the ribs. Man, Dragon is taking this one personally. Suplex but he releases Rude face first on the mat and then drops a chop for a two count. Whip to the corner, but Rude gets a knee up to block a charge and it gets a three count at 7:44. That was sweet as Rude caught one hard shot that knocked Dragon out for the flash pin. Rude 1-0!
-Now Rude is in control, but is selling the ribs. He hits The Rude Awakening and that gets three at 8:43. Again, great stuff as Dragon was still knocked loopy from the knee and Rude hit his finisher for another quick pin. Rude 2-0!
-Rude hits a backbreaker and then comes off the top with a knee, but that’s a DQ at 9:40. Rude knew what he was doing as he had a 2-0 lead and gave up a fall to damage Dragon. HHH and Rock would lift something similar in their Iron Man Match. Rude 2-1!
-Rude immediately gets a small package for another pin at 10:20. Just awesome! Rude 3-1!
-The crowd is rumbling again as Steamboat fires away with right hands. He sets too early on a backdrop though and Rude slams him face first into the mat. Dragon lands a hard body shot, so Rude slows it down and gets a Camel Clutch. Smart as he can waste some time up two falls. The crowd is begging for Steamboat to get moving as he crawls and powers his way across the ring. Rude notices and jumps up to put all his weight on Steamboat’s back. Rude then tries to swivel his hips, but can’t. Jesse credits him for being courageous in trying to give the women in the crowd a thrill. Hearing JR talk about bumping and grinding is like hearing my grandpa talk about it. So, yes, I see something wrong with it. Dragon back with an Electric Chair Drop to pop the crowd. Steamboat up first and he tries a splash, but Rude gets the knees up to block. Swinging neckbreaker from Rude and he continues to sell the ribs. WCW Rick Rude is awesome! Steamboat back with chops and Rude responds with clubbing blows as we hit the 15 minute mark. Rude hooks a reverse chinlock to burn more time. JR notes that there is no sudden death if the reach 30 minutes and Jesse is annoyed by that decision. Steamer fights his way out, but Rude buries a knee to cut him off again. Rude goes to the eyes and then STICKS a piledriver and it only gets two. Rude is rather annoyed with the count by the ref on that one. Tombstone, but Dragon uses Rude’s body to reverse and hits his own Tombstone for the pin at 17:40. That counter was great as Dragon WORKED to get it. Rude 3-2!
-There’s the rumbling of the crowd again. Rude grabs Steamboat by the tights and pulls him face first into the middle buckle. Rude goes up top, but Dragon catches him and hits a superplex as Ross notes it is a legal move because both men came off the top. Rude is out at two. Steamboat misses a clothesline and we get a double clothesline to leave both men down with 10:00 to go. Rude rolls over for a pin, but Dragon bridges up and gets a backslide for the pin at 20:23. Sweet! Tied at 3!
-Dragon kicks it into another gear as he goes for pin after pin in any way possible. Rude slows it down with a jawbreaker. That’s fantastic! Rude repeatedly slams Steamboat face first into the mat and yells, “you ain’t no Iron Man.” Steamboat responds with chops, but Rude goes to the eyes to cut off that flurry. Clothesline from Rude and he poses with his right arm because the left side hurts too much. Sell it sir! Rude chokes Steamer on the bottom rope and uses as much of the five count as possible. He fires off forearms and Dragon is out on his feet. Steamboat gets his own Rude Awakening, but Rude gets his foot on the bottom rope to break the count. Dragon actually gets frustrated with the ref as we have five minutes left. Suplex from Dragon gets two! Belly-to-back suplex for two. Rude ducks a chop and gets a sleeper. Steamboat keeps running Rude into the buckles, but Rude holds on and adds a body scissors for good measure. We have 3 minutes to go as Steamboat is starting to fade. The sweat is just pouring off both of them. Dragon goes for the ropes, but Rude uses his leg to block. Again, awesome! The crowd is doing it all it can to get Dragon back into it, but he fades to the mat as we have two minutes left. “Steamboat” chant from the crowd as Rude has had this hold on for over two minutes now. 60 seconds to go as the ref starts checking the arm. Dragon gets the arm up and walks up the ropes and pushes back for a pin at 34 seconds. Rude goes crazy now as he goes for pin after pin, but Dragon survives the onslaught and one last kick-out gives him the win as the time expires at 30:00. FANTASTIC!
Winner: Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat 4-3 at 30:00
-This was fantastic and has aged incredibly well. Just hard work and great psychology from both men. You can see how this one influenced Rock/HHH years later. That one had the hotter crowd and bat shit crazy ending (that was screwy with the time). This one was more old school and hit the crazy drama in the final three minutes with Steamboat surviving the sleeper and going Bret Hart vs. Piper (which happened just months earlier) to get the lead. Rude then knew he had to do something and snapped off like 4 pain attempts in the last 30 seconds in a desperate attempt to tie. Kudos to both men. ****3/4
-Round 2 of the bikini contest and this time it’s bathing suits. Madusa is rocking a one piece with a biker look. Missy is in a blue two piece that gets the bigger reaction. I think this contest is fixed. If you can’t trust a pro-wrestling bathing suit contest than what can you trust?
Bobby Eaton, Steve Austin, Arn Anderson (w/ Paul E Dangerously) vs. Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes, Nikita Koloff
-Someone in the crowd has a “Stunning Steve Rules” sign. That’s probably the peak of any kind of popularity Austin will ever have with the crowd. Old Anderson is the special ref for this one. Kind of weird to see this still going after the the bloody War Games match. I guess that was the major battle and this is the last remnants where the Dangerous Alliance is bravely just trying to hang on until they realize they have been abandoned and there is no reason to fight for the cause anymore. Windham starts with Austin and he quickly gets a hammerlock. Austin just looks weird with short, white boots and no knee pads or braces. The face he has hair doesn’t bother me though. Dustin eye and Austin goes to the eyes. He gets a shoulder tackle, but Dustin catches him with a dropkick and then another one. He dives for his corner, buy Dustin hooks an armbar. Austin is right next to his corner though and Eaton gets the tag. Eaton gets a roll-up, but Dustin is out easily, so Arn gets the tag. They are pushing the narrative that Arn wants to be World Champion and doesn’t care if it’s Sting or Vader. Arn was never going to get the shot though. Koloff in and Arn sprints to the top rope, but realizes it will be a DQ and climbs back down. Again, I hate that rule! JR then takes a shot at me as he says some sports writers have criticized the rule but don’t understand. Oh I understand, and it sucked in 1992 and still sucks today. Koloff with a Russian Sickle that sends Arn over the top to the floor, but Ross notes that is the ref’s call. Jesse wants a DQ, and the match grinds to a halt as we get an argument over whether it should be a DQ. Eaton back in and Koloff gets a bearhug. Arn in to break it up, but Koloff takes out both and then Austin runs in and gets knocked out of the ring as well. The Alliance regroup on the floor and Paul tells them to go to Plan Two and I hope it’s better than the one he had at War Games. Arn and Barry go again in the ring and Barry gets an atomic drop, but Arn hits the corner and as he snaps back, collides heads with Windham. Arn with a running clothesline in the corner, but then runs into a knee. Barry back with a sleeper as we are told 10 minutes have passed, but it’s only been 7:30. Crappy timers and wonky tournament brackets drive me insane. This match just has no heat right now and it could be because we already saw the heroes leave the DA a bloody pulp the previous month. Dustin gets caught in the wrong half of the ring and the DA take turns beating on him. We get an update on the bikini contest voting and Madusa is leading with 51% of the vote. What about the electoral vote? Political jokes aren’t my thing so it shows how much I am not into this match. These poor guys have to follow that Iron Man Match as well. Austin with a clothesline that turns Dustin inside out and it gets two. Dustin gets a brief comeback with some elbows, but Eaton in to cut off any tag attempt and hooks an armbar. Nearly 13 minutes into a 6 man, we really don’t need a submission hold. Dustin misses a crossbody and Arn gets in some shots on the apron. Ole bitching at Arn is kind of a fun moment. Dustin gets a roll-up on Austin for two, but again, gets cut off trying to make a tag. Arn back in and hey, 14 minutes in let’s hook an armbar. Ugh! Dustin runs Arn into Eaton and the crowd starts to finally get into this as Dustin crawls for the tag, but Austin cuts him off. Stun-gun, but Dustin falls far enough across the ring to get a tag. Everyone in the ring. Arn off the top, but Barry catches him in the gut. Barry with a superplex on Austin and Arn comes off the top again and this time Ole catches him and it’s a DQ at 15:30. Nearly 16 minutes for that ending, but I guess we don’t understand.
WInner: Dustin Rhodes, Barry Windham, and Nikita Koloff via DQ at 15:30
-The one benefit of the Watts era is you generally got clean finishes, so this was a bummer. I wonder if they knew the finish was going to suck and they just dogged it out there. This should have been a fun party match, but they couldn’t follow the previous match and just kind of went through the motions. **
-Tony is with Steamboat and he feels he has earned a US Title Match. Paul E Dangerously shows up and says Ricky gets no more shots at The US Title. Cactus Jack then attacks Steamboat and they brawl on the floor and it’s better than the 6 Man Tag we just sat through.
-Jesse is now with Badd to make sure he gets some camera time during the final round of the bikini contest. Madusa is working an Wonder Woman bikini with some ass less champs. Shawn Michaels would be jealous! Missy says her bikini was stolen so she steals the bandana off Jesse’s head and neck. You can see where this is going? Missy has “made” a bikini out of Jesse’s bandana’s and really Madusa’s look was better. Johnny declares Missy the winner and how does that work? Wasn’t it supposed to be a fan vote. Madusa is not happy and shoves Badd into a cabana and Badd apparently rips her top off. Jesse goes and he declares Madusa the first Lady of WCW. Well, at least they are saying first lady of WCW. There is one and will only be one, First Lady of Wrestling: Miss Elizabeth.
-Jim Ross clears up that the fan vote is still happening and the results will be available tomorrow. Well, okay then.
WCW World Tag Team Championship: The Steiner Brothers (c) vs. The Miracle Violence Connection (Dr. Death Steve Williams and Terry Gordy)
-I see why I was so confused doing my review of Clash XIX. We are being sold that this is the first meeting between the teams as The Clash was taped 4 days prior, but airs two days after this show. I guess I should have reviewed this show before the Clash. One second as I go and edit some stuff out of my Clash review. Okay, I am back with this dream match that totally hasn’t happened yet at a Clash taping in front of 5000 fans. JR is predicting new Champions and Ventura is shocked he is going against The Steiners. Well, JR loves some Dr. Death as we know. Gordy and Scott start us out and we get some mat wrestling. Scott with a half nelson and he tries to turn Gordy on his back, but they roll around and Gordy scrambles to the bottom rope to force a break. The tentative start continues as Gordy decides to tag out to Doc. Ventura is breaking all this mat wrestling and counter wrestling down like Joe Rogan. We are told 5 minutes have passed, but it’s only been four. Doc lands the first strike of the match, but misses a charge in the corner and Scott gets a roll-up for two. Scott takes Doc down with a side headlock. Rick gets the tag and that at least wakes the crowd up as they are just waiting for these teams to start throwing each other around the ring. Ross is basically drooling over the idea of these two going at it. Doc blocks a hip-toss and they jockey for position in the corner which leads to a clean break. Rick finally lands a belly-to-back suplex, but that’s too much excitement so Doc rolls to the floor. Jesse notes it is still a feeling out process as it is too early. It’s been 7 minutes? Doc back in and hits a series of shoulder tackles, but he gets caught with a Steiner-line on the third try. That gets two for Rick, but Doc runs him into the corner. Gordy in and he misses an elbow in the corner. Ross mentions these teams are on the same side of the bracket of the NWA Tag Tournament that starts at The Clash on Monday. Don’t get me started on how that bracket was set up. Gordy throws Rick around the ring and sends him to the ramp. Doc in and gets a shoulder tackle through the ropes. Rick back with a sunset flip, but Doc holds the ropes so Scott decks him with a forearm and that lets Rick get two. Doc tags out and Gordy is in and hooks a half crab. Rick fights his way out and gets Gordy on his back for a two count. Doc lands a kick to the face from the apron which lets Gordy get a spinning toehold. Rick breaks with a kick to the face and snaps off a belly-to-belly suplex. Scott in and he dumps Gordy on his heat, but it only gets a one count. Scott tries up Gordy’s leg, but Gordy grabs Scott’s foot and they fight on the mat for control. Scott turns it in a pin attempt, but Gordy is able to reach up and tag Doc. Doc boots Scott down and is feeling good about himself. Look these guys are working hard, but the crowd is not buying what they are seeing at the moment. I can appreciate the hard work and sweat, but this just isn’t my style and that’s okay. Doc with a reverse chinlock and then tags Gordy back into the ring. Scott ducks an elbow and gets a crossbody for two. Gordy rakes the eyes and they start trading forearms. Scott gets caught in the wrong corner though and Doc kicks Scott in the knee as the ref goes after to Rick. That seemed a little off like Rick jumped the gun and they had to go back to it. Gordy goes to work on the bad knee and the crowd tries to rally Scott. I assume their hands and feet are falling asleep so they are trying to get the blood flowing. Gordy with a clothesline for two and tag back to Doc. He goes after the ankle as Ross tells us Doc got his nickname in the 9th grade for beating up all the other kids in school. I guess Bart Gunn didn’t go to the same school. The MVC double team Scott again and Rick is in to break up a pin. Suplex from Gordy gets two and then right back to a leg submission. He starts to work towards a bow and arrow, but tags back to Doc. He slaps Scott in the face and that’s not smart. Doc goes to the knee and hooks a half crab. The MVC switch out and Gordy takes over with the half crab and transitions to a heel hook. Gordy pulls Scott back to his corner and back in comes Doc. He hooks a Lion Tamer which is kind off cool. Scott walks on his hands to get close to his corner, but Doc sits back. Finally, the tag is made to Rick and the crowd isn’t all that hot for it. Powerslam to Doc gets two! Rick off the middle rope with a bulldog as this one is finally picking up. Gordy gets knocked off the apron, but comes back to knock Scott off the middle ropes with a clothesline. Gordy with a power slam off the middle ropes, but he isn’t the legal man. Doc dives in for the cover and only gets two. He goes for it again and another two count. Gordy back in and he gets two off a dropkick. Double shoulder tackle gets two as we are told 5 minutes remain. The MVC have dominate this one which is probably why the crowd has been out of it. Suplex from Gordy gets two and then another two count. Doc back in and Rick punches away, but Doc stomps him down to the mat. They know the time is winding down, but Doc hooks a reverse chinlock. They are the challengers, so they kind of have to push the pace here if they want to win. Doc cuts off a charge with a knee to the gut and then hits a sit-out powerbomb for two. Front facelock because sure, just kill the clock when you are trying to win a title from someone. Two minutes left according to the broken timer. They start trading punches and Doc goes for the Stampede, but Rick slides off and gets a Steiner-line. Gordy in and hits a HEAVY clothesline in the corner, but Rick hits an even heavier one out of the corner. That was sweet! 45 seconds to go! Hottish Tag to Scott and backdrop from Gordy. Backdrop for Doc! Slam for Gordy. Slam for Doc. Clotheslines everywhere. Butterfly bomb and Frankensteiner as the time limit expires at 28:23. Stupid timer!
Winner: Time Limit Draw at 28:23
-I can appreciate the hard work and sweat they put into this, but I didn’t find it to be a fun match. The MVC just ate The Steiners up with submission holds before we got some fireworks in the final few minutes. Again, some will enjoy this more than me. It does make sense both teams wanted to face off again at The Clash. Also, why to end the show with a downer? I know this match was right up Watts alley, but if you are doing a finish where nobody wins, at least put it in the middle of the card and close with Sting/Jack or Rude/Steamboat. ***
-Ross and Ventura wrap things up while hyping the upcoming Clash and Great American Bash.
