Leighty’s WWE 205 Live Review: 06.04.21
Loading...-Sorry for the delay as I was working concession stand duty at the baseball complex where my son play’s t-ball. It was supposed to end at 9 PM, but the last game (girls fast pitch) ran long and I didn’t get home until after the show ended. My next issue was once it airs live, it disappears from Peacock for 2 weeks as Hulu has the replay window. Thankfully, it dropped on Hulu today which means commercials, but it is what it is. Let’s get to it!
-Announce Team: Vic Joseph (he’s back) and Nigel McGuiness
-Taped: WWE Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, FL
Ari Sterling vs. Sunil Singh
-It’s OG vs New Breed! Sterling is coming off a win over Daivari last week. It brings a smile to my face to see The Bollywood Boyz right back up with trying to get Vic to dance. He’s still not budging though. Sunil gets a take down and then floats over into a headlock. We are told Hale volunteered to be in Sterling’s corner, but he turned it down. Intrigue! The pace quickens a beat and Sunil ends up eating a knee to the face. The Bollywood Boyz try Twin Magic, but the ref isn’t stupid. It is effective though as the distraction lets Sunil sneak back in with a chop block to the left leg. Nigel mentions that Sunil mentioned he was going to attack the leg as Sterling had it banged up in his last few matches. Smart! Sunil works the knee for a bit but gets sent over the top top rope to the floor. Sterling is still too banged up and gets his knee wrapped around the ring post. Nice! He tries a second time, but Sterling is able to use a bit of power to post Sunil. Again though he can’t follow up as Sunil goes right back to the knee. Sunil up top with The Macho elbow and it directly on the knee in a fabulous touch. The Bollywood Block follow, but Sterling reverses causing Sunil to get to the ropes to break. They trade blows in the middle of the ring and Sterling wins that one. He gets a lg sweep and then the spinning axe kick. Samir runs interference leading to a roll-up for Sunil for two. Sterling has had enough though and hits an enziguri and a sidewalk slam into a faceplant (Baja 86 according to Nigel) for the win at 6:25.
Winner: Ari Sterling via pin at 6:25
-This was solid as the leg work from Sunil was strong, but sadly it was kind of forgotten about by the end of the match. Sterling continues to look good and probably should won a litter easier, but The Bollywood Boyz posed a decent threat with their cheating. **1/4
-I was curious why the run time for this show was 47 minutes and now I see why as they include more for folks watching on Hulu. In this case they replay the entire Drew McIntyre/Kofi Kingston #1 contender’s match from RAW this past week. Great match, but I am here for 205 Live.
-This past week on NXT, KUSHIDA knocked off the debuting Carmello Hayes in an open challenge.
Ariya Daivari vs. August Grey
-These two are very familiar with each other and this should be good. Nigel letting us know that Grey knows every line to ‘The Goonies’ cracked me up for some reason. Lockup to start and Grey gets a go behind into a hammerlock and then releases into a snapmare into a pin attempt for two. Back to the arm for Grey, but he tries to float over on a whip to the corner and gets caught with a boot to the ribs. Daivari gets a hangman submission, but Grey breaks with a jawbreaker and then neckbreaker. Daivari gets sent to the floor off a headscissors and Grey follows with a suicide dive. If this was Main Event on Hulu we would be taking a break, but this is 205 Live which means all action! Grey back out again and gets rammed back first into the apron and then into the announce table. Again to the announce table and then back in the ring at the count of seven. Daivari buries some knees to the damaged ribs/back and smartly follows with a body scissors. Grey punches his way out and tries for sleeper, but gets shoved off and Daivari catches him with a knee to the gut. Dropkick to the head of a kneeling Grey gets a two count. Grey lands a shot to get a breather and then he drops Daivari with a clothesline. He looks for a suplex, but the ribs/back are gone. He then tries to walk the ropes for the crossbody, but nobody is home as he crashes to the mat. Daivari up with the Persian Frogsplash and then a camel clutch. Grey is able to force a break and each men gets knocked out as they each land a clothesline. Daivari staggered the wrong way and gets caught with a right hand. To the corner and Grey lights him up with some chops. He bounces out of the corner with a clothesline and then follows with a belly to back suplex. Daivari bails to the floor, but Grey follows and tosses him into the plexiglass. Back in and this time the rope walk crossbody connects. A spinning brainbuster gets a two count for Grey. He looks for The Unprettier, but Daivari rolls out and throws a chop. He plants Grey with a Scorpion Death Drop for two. The Hammerlock Lariat is countered as Grey hits a superkick and then Daivari gets one of his own. Daivari gets a clothesline and then a hammerlock DDT for two. Nice! He switched up the offense there as Grey had the Hammerlock Lariat scouted! Gray avoids a suplex and again goes for Unprettier, but Daivari escapes again. Grey with a roll-up for two and then a slam for two which he turns into a single leg Boston crab. Daivari tries for the ropes, but Grey drags him to the middle of the ring and sits down on the hold. Daivari is able to break and catches Grey with a small package for two. Daivari eats a knee and third time is the charm as So Much Prettier finishes at 11:52.
Winner: August Grey via pin at 11:52
-This was a banger as they put everything together for a very good match. Grey needs to get a shot at KUSHIDA to pay off these wins over Daivari and Nese. He is as good a challenger as anyone at the moment and with the new blood in the division it should be his turn as Daivari and Nese work with the new guys. Heck of an effort from both men here. ***1/2
-Thanks for reading!
