Leighty’s WWE NXT Level Up Review: 01.20.23

-For whatever reason, I couldn’t find the live showing of WWE NXT Level Up on Peacock last night. So, I am up early to catch the Hulu replay. Let’s get to it!

-Announce Team: Matt Camp and Byron Saxton
-Taped: WWE PC, Orlando, FL

Nikkita Lyons vs. Jakara Jackson

-Jackson is still looking for her first win and I’m not liking her chances here. Byron lets us know these two are Tik-Tok BFFs. Lockup to start and Jackson drops down to avoid a kick before Lyons throws it. Timing was just a little off there. Jackson controls with a hammerlock, but Lyons goes to the leg and gets things to the mat. She covers for a one count and then hooks a side headlock. Lyons lands a back elbow and wants to go up, but Jackson pulls her down by the hair. She hands Lyons over the middle rope and throws knees from the apron. Jackson gets the mount and throws some strikes. She goes to an armbar and transitions to an overhead wristlock. Standing armbar as the crowd fades in and out trying to rally Lyons. Lyons is able to get a sidewalk slam to force a break. Jackson charges into an elbow. Lyons hits a spinning back fist and a running forearm in the corner. A slam follows and then a superkick. Split leg drop finishes at 5:09.

-A bit too long as this probably should have been more of a Lyons SQUASH. Lyons comeback was solid though. 3/4*

-Kelly is backstage with Damon Kemp. He faces Tank Ledger later tonight.

Damon Kemp vs. Tank Ledger

-Tank is also looking for his first victor and much like Jackson, I don’t like his chances here. Kemp immediately takes things to the mat. He struts over Tank’s back to clown him. Kemp gets another takedown and shows off some more. Ledge gets a shoulder tackle followed by a sidewalk slam. He sets too early on a backdrop and eats a thrust to the throat. Kemp gets a neckbreaker and then drops some elbows. Another neckbreaker as Ledger got stuck in the ropes. Overhead belly-to-belly suplex gets two. Kemp stretches Ledge as he goes to work on the shoulder and ribs. Ledge gets a hip toss to break, lands a clothesline, and hits Hall’s SOS Slam. A splash is blocked by Kemp with knees and he finishes with a Rock Bottom Backbreaker for the pin at 4:30.

Winner: Damon Kemp via pin at 4:30
-Decent hoss fight. Kemp is getting better as his offense is looking crisp and a big dude that can toss other big dudes around with suplexes works. *1/2

-Back to RAW as we join the 6 Pack Challenge with Balor, Rollins, Miz, Ziggler, Corbin, and Lashley. Again, Hulu has a match from RAW added to this show each week to pad the run time. This was a fun, chaotic match that involved interference from JBL, Theory, MVP, and Omos. Bobby Lashley gets the win and will face Austin Theory on RAW is XXX.

Odyssey Jones vs. Joe Gacy (w/ Schism)

-Lockup to start and noting doing as it’s a stalemate. Gacy tries a running shoulder and that goes poorly for him. Jones grabs a side headlock and Gacy has to punch his way out and then gets knocked back down again. Jones goes to work on the arm and then tosses Gacy into the corner. He hits a pair of slams and rolls over Gacy a few times. The crowd wants another one, but Ava grabs the leg to distract, letting Gacy get on track. He hits a running knee and drops an elbow for two. Gacy throws strikes and uses the middle rope to choke Jones. He sweeps the leg and gets a neck crank. Jones powers out and throws some clotheslines. He gets a shoulder breaker followed by a World’s Strongest Slam for two. Gacy lands an elbow in the corner and then a big boot. He gets in a shot on Jones’ surgically repaired knee and then finishes with the handspring lariat at 6:02.

Winner: Joe Gacy via pin at 6:02
-Not a fan of this one though I still have never seen the appeal of Gacy. Jones looks solid as a big-man wrestler. Gacy winning makes sense here and I appreciate commentary bringing up Jones’ knee surgery. *

-Thanks for reading!

The final score: review Bad

At this point we all know this show is about getting these kids out there in front on a live audience and letting them get some TV work. Sometimes we get a surprise or two with a decent match and other times we get weeks like this.
