More Details on Chelsea Green’s Interim Championship Status

It seemed cruelly ironic that when WWE finally adopted AEW’s good idea of having an interim champion while the previous holder recovers from injury, the interim champ would also get injured. Yet that’s precisely what happened with Chelsea Green.
Infamously referred to by Michael Hayes as not a top star, Green has spent every moment working to prove otherwise. Her victory for the Interim Women’s Championship seemed like an acknowledgment she had. Then came the freak orbital bone injury during a match on Smackdown.
Yesterday, we reported that Fightful Select said she wasn’t likely to be stripped of the title or miss TV time. Today, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter backs that up, saying Green is likely to be back on TV immediately. She will not be wrestling, however.
Considering that they’ve been doing the same for Liv Morgan, this isn’t a huge surprise. Morgan has been getting some criticism for not defending her title when she could, but she’s still in the storyline mix and remains a top character.
Non-interim champion Rhea Ripley looks likely to be out until at least the Royal Rumble. It would make less sense for a physically based character like her to have a title and not defend it, but both Green and Morgan have established personas as the type of person who would weasel out of some matches if they could.
