The Velocity Wrap-Up 05.14.06
Steve Romero, alongside Josh Matthews, welcomes us to Velocity.
Opening Match: Simon Dean vs. Matt Hardy
Dean comes out and cuts a promo in the ring. Simon says that Hardy claims that he will not die, which is different than the crowd due to their obesity. He calls out Hardy, who enters to a big pop as always. The lockup to start, and then trade punches. Dean locks in a hammerlock, but Hardy reverses into a snapmare. Hardy comes back and throws Dean into the corner, and punches away at him. Matt and hits a powerbomb for a two count. Simon whips Hardy into the ropes, but Matt counters with a kick to the face. Hardy charges towards Dean, but Simon sends him through the ropes and onto the apron. Simon hits a knee and a few boots to the face, drags him to the middle of the ring, and works on the left arm. Hardy unsuccessfully fights back, as Dean hits a DDT for two. Simon continues to work the left arm with an armbar. Hardy fights back with a few punches and then the side effect. Matt gets in a few forearms, sends Dean into the ropes, and hits an elbow. Dean stumbles to the corner buckle, and Hardy hits a clothesline and then a bulldog for another two count. Matt gets on the second rope, and hits an elbow. He then goes for the Twist of Fate, which Dean reverses. Simon attempts to whip Hardy into the corner, but Hardy counters and Dean gets sent into the turnbuckle. Simon fights back, hops onto the second rope and taunts Hardy. Matt interrupts Dean by hitting him in the face, and then hits the Twist of Fate off the second rope for the pin at 4:57.
Winner: Matt Hardy
Rating: ** – Good Velocity match, but basically what you’d expect out of the two.
– Promo for Judgment Day is shown. I can’t get a good grasp of the PPV. It seems to have a very good undercard with MNM/London & Kendrick, Lashley/Booker T, and Helms/Super Crazy. Guys like Benoit, Finlay, Hardy, Gunner Scott, and Burchill aren’t booked yet, either.
Orlando Jordan vs. Gunner Scott
Velocity Champion Orlando Jordan comes out to no reaction, as always. Scott doesn’t get much of one, either. The two lockup, quickly make their way to the corner, and are broken up. Jordan hits a snapmare in the middle of the ring and works the arm. Scott comes back with an arm wrench, which Jordan reversed into a drop toe hold. Orlando locks in a headlock, but Scott sends him into the ropes. Jordan comes off and hits a shoulder block, but misses an elbow. Scott works Orlando’s left arm, but Jordan fights back. Gunner gets sent into the ropes, rolls under a clothesline, and delivers a dropkick and then a hip toss. Orlando uses the top rope by sending Gunner’s throat onto it. Orlando pounds away and hits a swinging neckbreaker for a two count. Jordan locks in a headlock, and Scott unsuccessfully attempts to fight out of it. Orlando then uses Carlito’s backbreaker for two. That’s not cool. Orlando reapplies the headlock, which seems to be Jordan’s signature move over the past couple of months. Gunner gets sent into the ropes, but moves away from a charging Orlando Jordan, and hits a Russian leg sweep. Both men get back to their feet, and Orlando hits a few left arms. He misses a clothesline, as Gunner reverses it into a flapjack. Scott twice comes off the ropes and hits an elbow. Gunner sends Orlando into the ropes and nails a back body drop. Jordan kicks out of a Northern Lights Suplex after two. Scott sends Orlando into the ropes and hits a Belly to Belly suplex for the victory at 6:09.
Winner: Gunner Scott
Rating: **1/4 – Another good Velocity match, but like Hardy/Dean, it’s basically what you would expect out of the two.
– Promo for the Wreckless Intent CD is shown.
– Aired are highlights of Rey Mysterio versus The Great Khali from Smackdown.
– Advertisement for WWEShop.com is shown.
Main Event: William Regal vs. Chris Benoit
They start with a lockup, and Benoit leads Regal into the corner, and the referee breaks them up. Regal hits a snapmare and works on the left arm. Benoit rolls out of it and locks in a leg lock. Regal kicks up and hits a mockleyflip, but Benoit locks in a bodyscissors. Benoit reverses it into an attempted Crippler Crossface, but Regal counters with a Chicken Wing. Benoit is able to get the ropes and both men back away. They lockup once again, but Benoit is able to hit an enziguri, which sends Regal to the apron on the opposite side of the ring. Benoit goes for a suplex over the ropes, but Regal fights out of it. Benoit then goes to the apron and attempts a German Suplex off the apron, but once again Regal counters, this time with an elbow to the back of Benoit’s head. Regal then hits a DDT onto the apron! Regal rolls back into the ring, and Benoit follows. Regal hits a few knees to Benoit’s face, Benoit counters with a couple of chops, and Regal hits another knee, this time sending Benoit to the mat. Regal drags Benoit’s head to the side of the turnbuckle post, goes to the outside, and kicks Benoit’s head into the post. Regal enters the ring and taunts the crowd. Regal continues to work Benoit’s head, as a big “Regal Sucks” chant starts. Benoit powers out of an abdominal stretch, and gives Regal a chop. Regal fights back, but Benoit reverses it into an attempted Sharpshooter. Regal kicks out of it before it was fully applied, and he locks in the Regal Stretch and then a version of a Surfboard. Benoit escapes with a shot to the kidneys. Regal gets to his feet, hits two exploder suplexes, and then a knee to the face for two. Regal goes for the pin three more times, but Benoit kicks out of each on them. The two continue to reverse each other until Benoit hits a full nelson suplex. The two get to their feet and Benoit hits two German Suplexes. Regal fights out of the third and goes for a Butterfly suplex. Benoit reverses it into a suplex of his own. Benoit applies the Crippler Crossface, and Regal taps at 10:43
Winner: Chris Benoit
Rating: ***1/2 – Just a tremendous Velocity match. Both men had great chemistry and were exceptionally active.
Overall: Outstanding Velocity. You need to check out Benoit/Regal. Regal was extremely motivated and active for some reason, but I guess that happens when you get an actual opponent in the ring. Hardy/Dean and Scott/Jordan were solid, but unspectacular.
