Tully Blanchard Recalls Quitting the NWA While World Tag Team Champion
Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson left the NWA after their runs as NWA World Tag Team Champions, and Blanchard says he actually quit when they were still champs. Blanchard spoke about their exiting the company on his TullyVision podcast, recounting how the two of them were at odds with the company over money and saying he quit the night before they lost the titles in Philadelphia in September of 1988. You can see the highlights below, courtesy of Wrestling Inc:
On quitting the night before they lost the titles: “We actually quit the night before in Houston. I did. I didn’t talk to Arn about it, I went off and I told Dusty [Rhodes], ‘You want the belts tonight or tomorrow night? I’m done.”
On the cause of their dispute with the NWA over money: “It was probably the fact that [Ted] Turner had just bought (Jim Crockett Promotions) and they were giving guaranteed contracts to people and they didn’t give Arn and I a contract with guaranteed money and that was like a slap in the face when they were giving big money to other people that we were making stars out of and that’s just me speaking from the heart.”
