Views from the Hawke’s Nest: Chikara King of Trios 2016 – Night 2
Commentators: Joey Styles, Bryce Remsburg, Mike Quackenbush, & Leonard F. Chikarason
Crazy Mary Dobson vs. Deonna Purrazzo
This was a random but inoffensive way to kick off night 2 of KOT. There were a few glaring awkward moments for sure though where Dobson just flat-out missed Purrazzo at times when it seems like she should not have at all. The match was compact though, action-heavy, and got out before it bothered anyone (myself included). Purrazzo won via fruit roll-up. (**½)
King Of Trios 2016 Quarter Final Match
Major League Moustache (Dasher Hatfield, Trent Seven & Tyler Bate) vs. The heXed Men (Hallowicked, Icarus & Jigsaw)
This was a mostly fun match with a few key issues holding it back. They made the mistake of temporarily settling down into a regular tag match with a proper heat segment. It wasn’t a “bad” sequence, but there was no need for it. The match also had a very screwy sequence that led to the finish with the referee being attacked and some other dishonorable tactics that led to the rudo win. When you compound that with the fact that the clearly superior team lost, you have yourselves a disappointing series of events. (**¾)
Mark Angelosetti vs. Missile Assault Man
This was an underwhelming battle despite the fine effort. Touchdown dropping the Touchdown gimmick will hopefully help him get looks in other places, but it removes the longstanding connected he has with the Chikara crowd. It takes a lot of the juice of his matches clearly. MAN has been a character Chikara has really been trying to make a thing in the last three years. It does seem like the crowd is getting behind it admittedly, but he’s still nothing special in the ring. This match had talent. It was still boring though, (**¼)
There was a dumb worked shoot angle with Max Smashmaster who was trying to get his job back.Mike Quackenbush tried to calm the situation down. Princess Kimberlee came out to request that Smashmaster gets reinstated so that she can finish him. This was The Cringe.
King Of Trios 2016 Quarter Final Match
Team Original Divas Revolution (Jazz, Mickie James & Victoria) vs. Warriors Three (Oleg The Usurper, Princess KimberLee & The Estonian ThunderFrog)
This was a mix of good and bad. The good was the general energy and effort on display here. There was a sense of fun to most things going on which was nice to see. The end of the match lost some momentum though and featured a bizarre sequence where Mickie and Victoria forcefully kissed the frog. If nothing else, it’s surprising to see Chikara on back-to-back nights to do comedy spots that punch down instead of up. Oh well. (**¾)
Rey de Voladores 2016 Semi Final Four Way Elimination Match
Candice LeRae vs. Frightmare vs. The Space Monkey vs. Tony Nese
This was a solid RDV match. It had a lot of the classic positives and pitfalls of the RDV semifinal matches. There was a lot of good action throughout the match, but the match lost momentum as more people were eliminated from the match. The final pairing of Nese vs. Frightmare couldn’t really follow the previous portions of the match. Also, Nese doing “I don’t want to hit the girl” spots in 2016 is so tired and condescending. Anyway though, this was solid. Frightmare ended up winning which was not ideal but oh well. (***)
King Of Trios 2016 Quarter Final Match
Team JWP (Command Bolshoi, Hanako Nakamori & Manami Katsu) vs. The United Nations (Juan Francisco de Coronado, Prakash Sabar & Proletariat Boar Of Moldova)
Unfortunately, this match fell rather flat. The United Nations unit just did not have the capabilities to keep this one interesting. Team JWP also did not really bring the necessary energy and excitement to compensate for that. This was by far the weakest match of Night 2. There was just not much to it. Bolshoi reversed a submission into a fruit roll-up to pin JFdC. (**)
Rey de Voladores 2016 Semi Final Four Way Elimination Match
Aero Star vs. Amasis vs. Johnny Gargano vs. Wani
Unfortunately, this match felt very repetitive and was missing a lot of the charm and energy that the other semifinal had. At least Aero Star went over though! It could have been worse! It could have been Amasis! (**¼)
King Of Trios 2016 Quarter Final Match
Team Sendai Girls (Cassandra Miyagi, DASH Chisako & Meiko Satomura) vs. The Colony (Fire Ant, Silver Ant & Soldier Ant)
This was an underwhelming match yet again. It felt very repetitive, had little to know energy, and just did not pop off the screen like you would expect given the talent in the ring. The physical effort was there, but there just was virtually nothing for this match to hang its hat on. These King of Trios shows seemingly keep losing momentum as they good which is taking away from the quality significantly. (**¼)
