The Wrestling 5 & 1 12.08.12: Velvet Sky & Week 4 of the Versus Royal Rumble
TLC is near, and the stockings are all hung by the chimney with care. Actually, I don’t have a chimney, so I’m wearing my stockings. Last week, we had some good stuff and great responses. I expect this week to be just as spiffy.
But first…
BRING ON THE GIRLS!
Eleven weeks long, the Versus Royal Rumble features the women who have come so close to the Hall of Bang—three time winners Mickie James (who did it twice), Stacy Keibler, Gail Kim, Lita and Christy Hemme. It also features two former hall members in Brooke Tessmacher and Taryn Terrell. Add in twenty three more women from the WWE, TNA, NXT, the indies, overseas, old school ladies and more!
The results are in, and three more women were eliminated in the second week of The Versus Rumble!
Eliminated this week you have three amazingly beautiful women: Alicia Fox, Miss Elizabeth, and Reby Sky. Really? Two high vote getters were Rain and Scarlett Bordeaux? Really. The last DeMarcette and a woman who recently appeared on my show and was in this column last week. Still jealous? It’s cool.
Now it’s back to you—the reader—to pick three more women to eliminate. That’s right, you are NOT voting for winner, you are voting for someone to get eliminated. Three to be exact. We’ll narrow the field over the next eleven weeks until we get to the final two. At that point, a winner will be crowned!
At stake? Oh nothing, just a spot in the 411Mania Wrestling 5&1 Hall of Bang!
So who will win? We’ll get there, but first we need to eliminate three more of these beautiful ladies. Here is the remaining field, and you can vote below. Vote for the three you want to send home, and vote often. You can vote once every 12 hours, and voting closes Tuesday night.
Ladies and gentlemen…
The poll expires Tuesday night, and you can vote once every 12 hours. Now get voting!
I hate to be a smartass, but with regards to Cena owning Rock:
How is it possible for one character to “own” another character in a scripted conflict?
I mean did John McClain “own” Hans Gruber in Die Hard? Did Batman “own” the Joker in The Dark Knight?
We know WWE gives wrestlers scripts. We also know that Rock won at Wrestlemania, so the natural inclination would be to protect John Cena, the one who would still be around after the feud, during the buildup to the match. I’m not saying Cena wouldn’t own Rock in a shoot promo war or vice versa. I’m just saying that we will never find out on a WWE produced program. – Hick on a Bottom
In a sense, you answered your own question. It’s completely possible for one character to “own” another in a scripted conflict simply because it was written that way. For the record, yes, McClain and Batman did own Gruber and Joker respectively. You see, I didn’t get to say much about it all, but regardless of whether or not you believe that The Rock “held back” or was told to, the way it came off on television was that Cena looked better in the grand scheme of things, at least verbally. You have to understand that I wasn’t looking at this from a perspective of “shoot promos,” simply how it came off on the screen. We could argue ad nauseam over who could best who in shoot promos, but that wasn’t our argument. Still, thanks for reading!
Giving the “win” to Cena implies that you agree with his message. As a huge fan of The Rock, I will admit that he came off as too pandering and immature at times, but at the end of the day he still delivered as only he can. But I don’t agree with Cena’s message. His digs at Rock, regardless of effective delivery, came off as incredibly narrow minded. It really doesn’t matter if he believes what he’s saying, that it’s heartfelt. It doesn’t make his message any more true.
I’m not sure if I believe the reports that Rock held back on his promos, but even if he did it doesn’t matter. What he delivered is what matters. However, it is a little suspicious that for all the points that Cena raised – coming from his own beliefs and convictions – Rock never really answered them with anything but jokes. In my mind, Rock had the material/potential replies to MURDER Cena and his verbal attacks. He just didn’t.
So to conclude, it’s a tie. Rock got more time, for obvious reasons, and Cena was put in a position he hadn’t been in for many years (being the lesser star). This lead to some interesting dynamics, and it really showed Cena’s true potential. Cena did more with the time he was given, but in terms of delivery, message and impact, i.e. the war of words, I’m calling a tie.
That said, Rock needs to take it up a notch for his feud with Punk. It will be extremely interesting to see if he really still has the verbal goods. Too bad his character has been tweaked so far away from the late 90’s Rock. That incarnation could KILL anyone.
Oh, and Stacey Kiebler HAS to win this Rumble. – LueHaakon
I disagree that giving Cena the “win” implies I agree with his message. One has nothing to do with the other; it’s about presentation. I do agree, however, that The Rock needs to step it up big time come the feud with Punk. With Cena, it was child’s play vs child’s play, with both having their fair share of childish jokes. That’s just not going to fly against Punk’s more realistic edge.
Clicked just because of this Layla pic, yeah, she is hot.
The Shield had one promo, ONE FREAKIN PROMO, and people all around the world already made up their minds that Ambrose is breakout star here. I guess it’s more your wish he is (breakout star), than anything else, cause one pre taped segment is not enough to make any logical conclusion. – vetalfox
Sorry vetal, I disagree. Sometimes, one promo is all you need to make a hypothesis of the future. At the end of the day, that’s all it is anyways; an assumption based off of one promo. I don’t find anything wrong with that, and Ambrose did enough in that ONE promo than most wrestlers have done after numerous promos of their own. He did the little things, he spoke with conviction, he BECAME a character that had me immediately interested and invested in his future. I won’t pretend at all to know anything about these three men before this moment, because I didn’t. But, I’ll stand by my position of Ambrose breaking out sooner, rather than later after only one promo. Also, kudos to starting a great back and forth between you readers.
I don’ get why you are trying to predict who is going to be the breakout star from the shield. Of course you go with Rollins, which is SUCH a big surprise, btw. Sorry for the sarcasm, but why are you guys always trying to predict who the breakout star is going to be out of these factions? I know WWE has a tendency and history of breaking these guys up, but you make sound to me like they already are. Didi you do this when you were a kid too? IDK how old you are, but did yo do this when you were a kid, too? When the Four Horsemen were around, did you say, “Oh, that Tully Blanchard, he’s gonna be the breakout star, I just know it. Poor Arn though. He is going to have to stay in the mid-card when I know he is capable of better.” No? Then please stop doing so when a new group, faction, whatever, shows up on the scene. It comes off as cynical to me.
Regards to Cena and the Rock’s promo battles however, in my opinion, we all lost. From Cena being SUPER SERIAL reeked of desperation and knowing he doesn’t have anything when compared to the Rock other than the fact he would still be there, and he has some kind of rapping skill (which is supposed to important nowadays?) as demonstrated when he came back as thuganomics Cena and did terrible rapping promos with jokes my six year old cousin could have written for him.
Speaking of children writing jokes for people, The Rock was even worse. Every damn promo or segment he had with the exception of when he returned and Survivor Series last year, was just awful. Hell, you remember kung pow chicken to kung pow bitch? That remark was so complex, so intelligent, and so difficult to remember he wrote it down on his forearm. The Rock concert thing was actually going well until that last bit where he stumbled over his words and was generally disappointing. So yeah I felt like we all lost during that awful year long “feud” between Cener and the Crock. – Mr. Magnimonius
Mr Mag, I think you take the “breakout star” term too seriously. All this means to me is that one of these guys will matter more than the other, regardless of whether they are broken up are still together. And to answer your question, yes, when I was a kid, there was almost always that one guy in any faction that stuck out moreso than the other. Whether it was a favorite of mine, or just a more compelling character, there was always one dude that stood amongst the pack. In this case, it is Ambrose for me, so I don’t know where you got my choice as Rollins. I don’t think Greg even chose Rollins, to be fair.
As for your assessment on Rock/Cena, I can’t say I disagree. I was left feeling extremely underwhelmed throughout the entire thing and although it culminated into a great match at Mania, the story lacked soooo much. I still haven’t decided if that was because I had such high expectations, or if it really just wasn’t all that great.
TNA World Championship Match
Jeff Hardy (champion) vs. Bobby Roode
What I expect to see here is another strong working a great match with Jeff Hardy. The formula worked for Bound For Glory, and it worked for Turning Point. Bobby Roode isn’t Austin Aries, but that’s good here. Aries and Hardy were about non-stop action, this will be different. Roode is a ring general, and he’ll take the lead in what is going to be an entertaining defense for Hardy. And it will be a successful one at that.
Prediction: Jeff Hardy pins Bobby Roode to remain TNA World Heavyweight Champion
One Final Time
AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels
I really don’t see this being “One Final Time,” but I do think it’ll be the last for a while. Daniels, at over 40-years old, is as good as he’s ever been. In his new douchebag heel role, he’s been nothing short of amazing. And AJ is AJ, one of the best in the world. I can count on one finger the number of bad matches these two have had together. My initial inclination was that AJ Styles would win—he always beats Christopher Daniels on PPV. But given the story they’re telling, I see it differently.
Prediction: Christopher Daniels cheats to beat AJ Styles, leading to another match at Lockdown
TNA Knockouts Championship Match
Tara (champion) vs. Mickie James
I must admit, Mickie James has returned looking better than ever. Not just in her ring gear either, but in the ring itself! Tara is at her heel best, and Mickie is going to have all of the fan support (deservedly so).The fact that TNA chose to re-debut Velvet Sky during the promo for this PPV match should tell it all, though. This is about building Sky-Tara for 2013.
Prediction: Tara retains the Knockouts Championship when Velvet Sky distracts Mickie James—even though she was trying to stop Jesse from interfering
TNA World Tag Team Championship Match
Chavo Guerrero, Jr. and Hernandez vs. Matt Morgan and Joey Ryan
Chavo and Hernandez haven’t exactly set the world on fire as champions. But they’re becoming a solid team—one that should just now be hitting top contender status, not holding the straps.
My prediction is based on the fact that TNA seems to be throwing some weight behind Joey Ryan and Matt Morgan. No real opportunity in the other divisions, why not make them the tag champs?
Prediction: Joey Ryan and Matt Morgan become new TNA World Tag Team Champions
Bully Ray vs. Austin Aries
After a very different build, I am excited for this match. I think they can be very entertaining in the ring together, and I think the newer face-heel dynamic will really play well in the Impact Zone. Ray ad Aries delivered big time in their feud earlier this year, and now they’re being given a bigger stage on which to perform. I think they deliver big time once again—same result, different reason (Brooke inadvertently costs Bully the match).
Prediction: Austin Aries takes advantage of a distraction to defeat Bully Ray
Aces & Eight Man Tag Team Match (copyright 2012, Greg DeMarco)
Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, Garett Bischoff and Wes Briscoe vs. Four Members of Aces and 8s
I’ve been waiting for a big Aces & Eight Man Tag Match since they arrived, and now I finally get it! I think we get a turn in this match, but not the Briscoe one that everyone expects. Garett Bischoff turns, Aces & Eights wins.
Prediction: Aces & Eights gets the win
TNA X-Division Championship Match
Rob Van Dam (champion) vs. Kenny King
Welcome back, Kenny! Kenny should have a huge future in TNA, but not yet. RVD rarely loses on PPV, and it isn’t starting here. Rob Van Dam retains, but King has a great showing and gets respect from Van Dam.
Prediction: Rob Van Dam pins Kenny King with a roll-up to retain
Overall Impression
Now that the card is built, it’s another strong showing for TNA. James Storm is absent on this one, even though he earned a title shot on the last PPV. Thems the breaks, I guess! I’d love to see Storm vs. Kazarian get added on Sunday, though. That said, this card has potential for greatness, and I wouldn’t miss it if I were you.
Prediction: Too many people will miss out on a great PPV because they don’t order it.
You Decide: What are your predictions for Final Resolution?

A certain video has been making waves on the internet the past week or so, and it comes from a source that is altogether baffling. At an event called “Ignite Baltimore,” an astrophysicist from John Hopkins University was posed with these questions:
If you had five minutes on stage, what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? At every Ignite Baltimore 16 artists, technologists, thinkers and personalities will answer this challenge.
The possibilities are obviously endless for such an expansive mind. He could have talked about the universe, the cosmos, the density of the cosmic microwave background, Samos, ANYTHING! Instead, he chose a topic dearest to all of our hearts. Yes, readers, an astrophysicist took this daunting task of stage time and spoke about….CM Punk.
In five minutes, Mike Specian nearly validates our fandom in such a way that we could only hope to explain. When people ask why we are fans, or simply question the fact that we are, it’s so hard to properly articulate why – especially when their immediate rebuttal is, “you know it’s fake, right?” Specian had five minutes to, not only convince an entire crowd of non-believers that this product was worthy of its fanbase, but also to gain their attention and keep it, while using characters that were, arguably, unknown.
From a fans standpoint, we can be jaded and assume that there NEED be a previous base of knowledge in order to appreciate and understand Specian’s position, but I challenge you, reader, to watch this with an open mind and pretend – the best you can – that you know next to nothing about wrestling, and ask yourself if it can truly be understood from a perspective of a person that knows nothing about the wrestling world.
You Decide: Did Mike Specian give a compelling and truthful argument about “The Summer of Punk?”
Oh, you thought we were done with Specian? No, no, no! I actually reached out to the man about his video, and he was more than willing to let me in on his preparation and mind before and after his performance. He allowed me to ask him a few questions and gave some great, and thorough answers that I want to share with you guys.
How do you, as a fan, feel you posed such a compelling argument to a crowd that knew next to nothing about it – consider your time frame, what you cut out and what you let in, etc.
It helped that the Summer of Punk is a fascinating story. The point I attempt to convey to friends who dismiss wrestling as being “fake,” is that what appears on screen is infused with reality, albeit in ways a casual observer would not be able to identify. The most compelling characters are amplifications of the performers themselves. The political reality of who gets pushed is captivating. The in-ring matches are as real as any live performance can be.
The Summer of Punk managed to capture all of this complexity and intrigue in just one event. If I was ever going to be able to express the rich tapestry that is professional wrestling, this was the story that was going to do it.
That said, trying to:
– introduce pro wrestling,
– explain what’s good and bad about it,
– introduce characters,
– describe their motivations,
– create the conflict, and
– resolve it
in just 300 seconds was very difficult. I threw out over ten pages of material. I was never able to mention Ring of Honor. I really wanted to call WWE a “fascist meritocracy,” but I couldn’t find a place to work it in.
In the end, being constrained to just five minutes was a blessing in disguise. As is, every word was meticulously chosen to maximize efficiency and I let the slides tell parts of the story. The pacing keeps the audience engaged throughout. More time would have likely diluted the impact.
How effective do you think your presentation was?
The talk was really designed for two audiences – wrestling fans and non-wrestling fans. The positive feedback from both groups has been tremendous.
Going in, the crowd at Ignite could have cared less about professional wrestling, or at least that’s the impression I got from my informal census. For technical reasons, I was only able to capture audience reactions when I wasn’t speaking, but my friends tell me that they seemed really engaged throughout.
After the event, a number of people said that while they had little interest in wrestling, they found the talk to be really enjoyable. I was able to collect a few business cards and the following morning I received the following message from someone in attendance:
Hey Mike! Didn’t get a chance to meet you in person last night to say “great fucking job.” You spoke with passion and professionalism, never missing a beat with the slides. It seemed like you truly entertained an audience of people who likely believe wrestling is a lowest common denominator form of entertainment. That’s quite a feat! I look forward to seeing your speech go viral within the internet wrestling community. Great fucking job!
So for those in the auditorium I think the talk hit its mark. It would be great if more non-wrestling fans got to see it, but since YouTube and Vimeo viewers tend to self-select their content, I’m not sure how to make that happen.
The wrestling fans who’ve watched it have been almost universally complimentary. I’m sure I was just preaching to the choir, but it was nice to offer just a bit of catharsis for frustrated fans.
Do you think fans of the current product are too jaded to appreciate it?
I don’t think they’re jaded; I think they’re just bored. Three hours of wrestling on Monday nights is just too much, especially when everything feels the same. With a couple of exceptions, no characters really stick out. Also, WWE’s top storyline basically started off as a rip-off of the Clair Lynch angle in TNA, which wasn’t even that good to begin with! Then you add in Smackdown, Main Event, NXT, Impact, etc. and it’s a lot to get through.
That said, there’s still a lot of really good wrestling out there. Glory by Honor 11 was a great show. Dragon Gate USA always performs at a high level. Aries, Punk, Bryan, Roode, Daniels and Kazarian – all these guys are consistently putting out great performances, but as goes WWE, so goes the state of the business.
Do you feel you came off as a fan or a presenter? Both? More one than the other?
I think I came off as both. It’s hard to give a talk like that if you’re not a fan. I cared too much that things could change for the better!
However, at Ignite, I couldn’t be too much of a fan lest I compromise my objectivity. I looked at Ignite as the rare opportunity to present the world of professional wrestling, as seen through my eyes, to an audience that knew almost nothing about it. I mean, when does that ever happen‽

Thank you, Mike, for your time and your video.
On the heels of Tony Acero’s discussion about Twitter and its impact on wrestling (click here for last week’s 5&1), independent star—and former WWE developmental talent—Kevin Matthews took Bill DeMott to task on Twitter over their interactions in developmental.
And when I say he took him to task, I ain’t kidding!
“1 day I saw Ice Train in the shower @ WCW the same time creative asked what I want my gimmick 2b. I said THATS A HUGE ERECTION. #DeMottcracy.
“Remember my run as WCW US Champion? The company went out of business shortly after my first title run. #DeMottcracy.
“One of my favorite sayings to the students is “do as I say not as I do” what it means is I’m the drizzling fn shit. TrueStory #DeMottcracy.
“My word is gold. WHEN @billdemott gets fired from WWE which should be soon he has a personal invite from me to do me vs him live at PWS.
“I love the WWE, I enjoy watching there show I enjoyed my matches w them and even like Johnny Ace. My hatred for DeMott has zero to do w WWE.
“Some ppl claim Im a great trainer, those ppl still have jobs w WWE. Its called politics. If they speak up,I make sure there fired #DeMottcracy.
“Buy my book its a great fairytale to read to your children before bed time. #DeMottcracy.
“I made Angel Williams do 40 up and overs till she snapped her Patella tendon in half and was out for 9months. TrueStory #DeMottcracy.
“WWE hired Khali solely 2 feud with Taker.they needed him 2learn how to work. I made him run miles. They were pissed. TrueStory #DeMottcracy.
“This just keeps getting better! NXT talent just texted me that Bill DeMott is asking talent NOT to report injuries 2the office. #DeMottcracy.
“Did the Tough Enough cameras stop rolling? I can’t tell the difference. Torn ACL? Walk it off and get back in there. #DeMottcracy.

“After Kevin Matthews tore his bicep & had sugery I asked him if he had a lot of pain killers. I needed my candy. TrueStory #DeMottcracy.
“How many more pills do I have to take till I drop dead already? #DeMottcracy.
“Ur right u obese cocksucker @billdemott in the end I will win. Because in the end u will b unemployeed, w no friends & no power JUST LIKE B4.
“Ur a washed up bitter pill popping drug addict bi polar cunt. Must feel good knowing the business will celebrate the day u die. @billdemott.
“Hey @billdemott remember when u tried to shoot on me twice & laid on me. Remember how easily I threw you off like hot garbage? Id love 2 cu.
“I have several NXT/FCW students who are leaking shit to me left n right. I will expose every wrong step this fat cunt @billdemott makes.”
This is courtesy of our 411 report here. Or more accurately the report we copied and pasted this from.
The key here is that Kevin Matthews not only burned any chance he had of going to the WWE, I don’t see a need for TNA to ever hire him, either. Now, some of these things have been out there as rumors about Bill DeMott for a few years now. And if you watched Tough Enough or have listened to his interviews, you’ll know that DeMott isn’t a normal cat. But he’s obviously smarter than Kevin Matthews…
Bill DeMott tweeted a response:
Hey @2CockyKM didn’t realize you are on Social Media. Glad to see things are going well for you, would like to catch up some time. Judging by your tweets you know where I am. Stop by sometime let’s catch up, Happy Holidays.#DEMOTTCRACY
That didn’t stop Matthews, oh no!
“u want me to drop by and catch up @billdemott ? Just moved back to jersey. Were running 4/5 and 4/6 you’ll be in town. Let’s link up scumbag.
“U didnt no I was on twitter yet u have me blocked? @billdemott afraid Im the only 1 w balls big enough 2 say the truth bout u miserable cunt.
“@billdemott u want us 2 meet up. By all means come by our show mania wkend. Ill get u a comp ticket.Ill also bitch slap u through the floor
“Still the same old @billdemott glued to the internet like the fat scumbag mark he is.ur a shit trainer & a worse human being. #betteroffdead.
“Must be nice to no that YOUR students, guys I dont even know from a hole in the wall r hitting me up burying u. @billdemott goodjob asshole.”
While I think the best response was no response, DeMott doesn’t strike me as a “no response” guy. So this was the next best thing. He’s killing him with kindness, while really rubbing Mathews own stupidity in his own face. He knows Matthews is done. Regardless of DeMott’s reputation as a backstage guy or as a trainer, he’s Bill DeMott.
Matthews also solidified himself as the next in a line of independent talents with an undeserved sense of entitlement and as a guy trying to put himself over. Based on his first tweet, referencing Ice Train, he’s proven to be a racist. According to his fourth tweet, he only cares about promoting a match for New Jersey’s Pro Wrestling Syndicate. PWS is one of the most successful promotions running on the independent circuit today. They don’t need Matthews to sell a match he wants like that. Especially when it’s not likely to happen. If it did happen? Matthews might try to shoot, and DeMott might to try to murder him.
But we’re comparing Bill DeMott and Kevin Matthews. Bill DeMott > Kevin Matthews. And he always will be.
The best part? Matthews didn’t stop! He kept on going, even posting a picture (which isn’t safe for work, by the way) of wrestlers training naked at Deep South Wrestling—where DeMott was in charge.
This guy…
You Decide: Did Kevin Matthews accomplish anything positive with his tweets?
Such a beautiful moment.
