~WWE GREAT AMERICAN BASH~
Dan Wilcox: The way that this match has been thrown together at the very last minute is a sure indication of a retention here. That may or may not be the right decision, but I don’t see any other outcome.
Winner: And STILL WWE US Champion, Matt Hardy
Larry Csonka: I really hope that they drop the title to Shelton here. Matt is cold as a US Champ, Jeff has nothing to do and Shelton needs direction. Give him the title and let he, Umaga, Kennedy, MVP and others work the division while Matt and Jeff feud with Miz and Morrison. That’s money
Winner: Shelton Benjamin
Jarrod Westerfeld: What in the heck? I really have been missing out on a lot. How did this match come about? Wow, it’s like the WWE is taking up the 2006 TNA method of booking, along with the random 2007 ROH booking we’ve seen before. A match that’s basically for the sake of a match? And is this creative’s answer to move the belt back to SmackDown? I guess we’ll finally see The Gold Standard start to live up to his name.
Winner: Shelton Benjamin (via gimmick namesake finally kicking in)
Jeremy Thomas: No, no, no, no, NO. This could be a great, wonderful, exciting feud…if they, you know, built a FEUD around it. They haven’t given Matt anything meaningful to do since he won the US Title, and he needs a program with someone to gain some momentum. Benjamin could use a good, strong feud in order to build himself up. So why are they in a match with no heat and no build to it in Pay-Per-View? I see–hopefully–a match where Matt retains by DQ or some other tainted way, and Shelton takes offense to we can see this feud last a month or two.
WINNER: Matt Hardy (DQ, STILL WWE United States Champion)
Matt Short: If this gets time to develop, we could have a fine match. Benjamin already has a win over Hardy, so I’m inclined to think the belt won’t change hands here. It’ll probably be used as a gauge for Shelton. If he can do a good job here, he might win the title in a rematch down the line.
Winner: Matt Hardy
JT: I’m not sure how I feel about Shelton at this point. He crashed and burned in terms of a push numerous times on RAW. He was starting to get some of his credibility back over in ECW, but as soon as he started heated up, he was moved to SmackDown! (and again, a bigger roster). It’s no secret Matt Hardy doesn’t need the US title, and I think this would be a great way to not only help Shelton carry over some of that momentum from ECW, but also spark some interest in the mid-card with guys like Kennedy, MVP and so on.
WINNER: And NEW United States Champion, Shelton Benjamin
Michael O: It hasn’t been a good month for the incumbents, but I don’t think Matt needs to lose here and I don’t think Shelton has done enough to justify a title win. You can make your own ‘affirmative action/Michael Hayes’ joke if you need to. I’m above that. Penis.
Winner: Matt Hardy
Wendell Mitchell: Despite the hastily thrown together nature of this match, I see the title changing hands here. Not sure where Matt goes from here. Maybe he finally feuds with Edge again as Edge tries to get back the WWE title. Funny how Shelton’s a former IC and Tag Champ, but since he became the Gold Standard he’s only had a handful of title shots. So Shelton gets to live up to his nickname and Matt maybe moves to the main event scene for a minute
Winner: And New WWE US Champion, Shelton Benjamin (Hopefully Matt sells his finisher right this time)
Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels
Dan Wilcox: This rivalry has been going on for several months and has continually kicked ass. In the last couple of weeks Jericho has really picked up his promo work and the intensity has returned. I am hoping that this is not the end of the rivalry and if that is to be the case Jericho should be getting the big win here, probably via Lance Cade shenanigans, to set up a blow off at Summerslam. There is also some intrigue regarding Paul London who Jericho attempted to recruit on Raw, and if that’s any indication of a Jericho-led anti-Michaels stable, this may be just the beginning of this feud, which I wouldn’t mind one bit. While most of the matches on the card have potential to be really good, this is the one that should steal the show and be a great match without doubt.
Winner: Chris Jericho
Michael Weyer: The build-up for this has been excellent with awesome promos and it promises a great battle. For the actual result, it’s a bit tough but Jericho’s been needing a win for a while and this should be it to keep the great feud going.
WINNER: Y2J
Robert S. Leighty Jr.: I am torn on the winner, but this match should be Match of the Night. They have delivered in their 2 previous PPV encounters and this should be no exception. I think you can give Jericho the win, and perhaps set up Jericho as a challenger for The World Title. I guess you can do the same for Shawn, but I’ll give the edge to Jericho due to shenanigans from Lance Cade.
Winner: Chris Jericho
Shawn S. Lealos: I absolutely love this feud. It is being set up perfectly. I was choosing to side with Jericho at the start because everything he was saying about HBK was right. Then I remembered that HBK was my favorite wrestler. I loved the way the they brought in former HBK student Lance Cade and also love how they have integrated information about Paul London as well. This is coming together better than almost any feud since HBK and Ric Flair’s Wrestlemania showdown. HBK has beat Jericho once, so it would be nice to see Chris get the win back. However, HBK needs revenge for the eye damage, so that would put it back in Shawn’s favor. I say Chris wins here and they have their rubber match at Summerslam. I think Chris should win this feud however to elevate him back to the main event.
WINNER: CHRIS JERICHO
Jeff Small: With Summerslam only a month away, we should not expect anything to be solved here. Unless the WWE really thinks Lance Cade is the future and proceeds to blow off Jericho/Michaels here for Cade/Michaels. As for who wins at the Bash, I expect Jericho to win by nefarious means seeing as that’s what HBK does all the time.
Winner: Chris Jericho
Larry Csonka: These guys are doing some really good work together, and I thought that HBK has delivered some money promos as of late. I feel that the match will be BIG TIME psychology, centered around the eye that has been a big focal point of the angle. Watching HBK sell the attacks and the emotion of the promos, this could be some great stuff. Jericho needs the high profile win here to cement the turn and the fact that he is a douche bag, and I think he gets it here.
Winner: Chris Jericho
Julian Bond: As everyone has mentioned here, this feud is slowly shaping up to be a classic. Their epic match at Wrestlemania is my personal favorite of all time and I hope that they step it up to the next level here. I see HBK kicking Jericho’s butt all over the place, only to have Y2J take advantage of Michaels’ “crazy eye” to take the win and prepare for the big blow-off at Summerslam.
WINNER: Chris Jericho
Andy Critchell: Ah, HBK and Y2J, the most interesting feud in wrestling today and proof that a match doesn’t need a title to be seen as important. I really like how this has been built and how WWE seems to be going for the super long and slow burn. Besides, there hasn’t been much Lance Cade involvement in this angle yet and I believe that one of the goals of this feud is to make him look like a rising star. SummerSlam is on the horizon and while the Great American Bash was a big deal for WCW, it really has never been a big deal for WWE so I don’t think this feud will end quite yet. Don’t be shocked if there is some Paul London involvement as well.
WINNER: Jericho via Cade or London interference.
Jarrod Westerfeld: I called for these two to clash over the Intercontinental title back around Judgment Day, and again at Night of Champions, but I’ll admit what they did to get the strap off of Jericho while keeping his feud with Michaels alive was well done, and may actually rebuild the credibility of the strap without these two being in the mix. As it stands, this looks like an interesting twist to their feud and the focus of this battle doesn’t muddy up a title that wasn’t even a thought for the brawl. Jericho looks to be swaying away any former students of Michaels, those who trained directly under Shawn or were just members of his wrestling academy. Overall it feels interesting and should they go the route of teaming Shawn up with Paul London, we could really dig deeper into this feud and really give Cade and London some shine off of these two stars. As for the match, Michaels has gone over Chris before on pay-per-view. Y2J also has a loss off of his last pay-per-view appearance so I think it’s only time for Chris to get back a win on the bigger show.
Winner: Chris Jericho (via shenanigans?)
Andy Clark: I have run hot and cold on this feud over the past few months and I am definitely on the hot side here. I see nothing else worthwhile for either man on the horizon so this feud MUST CONTINUE~! Y2J picks up the win thanks to Cadeference.
Winner: Chris Jericho
Jeremy Thomas: These guys can feud forever as far as I’m concerned, ’cause that’s how much I’m loving this. Jericho is at his best when he’s playing off Michaels, and Shawn’s looking really inspired as of late with his promo work. There’s no reason for HBK to go over in this one yet, and I have a feeling we’re going to see a new member of the Jeri-Stable, when Paul London turns and costs Michaels the win. (I know London’s in the “Not to be pushed” category, but it makes too much sense after Raw.)
WINNER: Chris Jericho (London interference into Codebreaker)
Matt Short: This has had a great build to it so far, with maybe a couple bumps along the way. Regardless, this match is a prime reason to buy the PPV. Michaels and Jericho have not yet disappointed in their matches with each other, so there are very high expectations for this match. Judging from what happened after Jericho beat Paul London this past Monday, it feels like Y2J is going to start pulling in more followers to him and move up the ladder of Raw’s heels. A win here over Michaels with interference by Lance Cade (and maybe London?) could help push him up there. This won’t be the last time we see these two go at it, but I think it will set the stage nicely for a Summerslam match between them.
Winner: Chris Jericho
JT: I’m assuming this isn’t the end of things, in fact I’m hoping this isn’t the end of things; but if it is, I hope these two really step it up in the ring. Everybody knows what they’re capable of, we’ll just have to hope that booking doesn’t ruin it with too many shenanigans (note I said too many, not none at all). In order for this to have any shot of continuing though, Jericho will have to pick up the win (fingers crossed for clean???)
WINNER: Chris Jericho
Michael O: As I lamented in last week’s Dope, it is a true shame that we are so rarely treated to storylines as good as this one, with an eventual pay off that has the potential to live up to, if not surpass, our highest expectations. This entire feud has been brilliantly built, with the nuances of Shawn’s much storied backstage past catching up with him and Jericho crumbling before the world as he greedily eyes the respect Shawn has cultivated as icing on a beautiful layer cake that came out of the oven after Wrestlemania and has yet to go stale. Since Shawn won the last time, and since Jericho has a shiny new lackey in the form of Lance Cade (mmmmm…love that new lackey smell), I’ll pick Y2J to win. But I’ll be happy whatever the outcome, as this match will no doubt rock my fucking face.
Winner: Chris Jericho
Wendell Mitchell: Interestingly enough, I just finished disc one of Shawn Michaels last box set and my favorite part was watching the genuine admiration Jericho has for Michaels. It’s easy to see how great they are together, evident by the fact that their match at Wrestlemania 19 was easily my favorite of the night and still in my top ten of all time. Part of me thinks HBK will win this match, but I’m going to give Y2J the nod. I see Paul London accidentally costing HBK the match in a fail bid to assist his mentor.
WINNER: Chris Jericho (London interference into Codebreaker)
NYC Parking Lot Brawl: John Cena vs. JBL
Dan Wilcox:This is one of those unofficial number one contender’s matches and even though Cena is 2-0 on JBL on pay-per-view this year, there is absolutely no way JBL is winning here, even though the World Championship match suggests that some strong heel challengers will be needed. But Kane and Chris Jericho may both be ahead of that particular line. JBL’s attack on Cena at the end of Raw only confirms Cena’s victory here, so the only question is whether or not these two can finally have a good match after two dull affairs at Judgment Day and One Night Stand. The Parking Lot Brawl stipulation should make this a pretty fun match and different to what we’re used to from the WWE product in 2008 so if nothing else, it’ll be a fun spectacle.
Winner: John Cena
Michael Weyer: Well, this makes sense. First a hit and run, now a parking lot battle. We all know these two are good together and especially when the rulebook goes out the window so this should be a wild match up. Still surprises me Cena hasn’t gotten the belt back yet but this should showcase his wild fight style and selling en route to a victory.
WINNER: Cena
Robert S. Leighty Jr.:From what we saw on RAW, John Cena should be dead. I’m sure we get some cop out that he rolled under the car he was leaning against. Cena is 4-0 against JBL on PPV (if I remember correctly), and 5-0 seems certain. This could be an entertaining garbage affair. I don’t see it being as stiff as what Regal and Finlay gave us on Nitro, but give us some good violence and some blood like Judgment Day 2004, and all will be good.
Winner: John Cena
Shawn S. Lealos: The end of RAW was S.T.U.P.I.D. That was just dumb, dumb, dumb. People talk about TNA putting out bad angles and then make excuses when WWE does something this stupid. This is right up there with the Vince McMahan limo explosion. It makes me not give a crap about this match.
WINNER: JOHN CENA
Jeff Small: Hey, if vehicular homicide doesn’t stop Cena, then a silly parking lot brawl won’t. If this match is akin to Cena/Eddie from Smackdown 2004 and not Blackman/Shamrock, then all will be forgiven from last Monday.
Winner: John Cena
Larry Csonka: I did NOT want to see this match, I am sick and tired of JBL vs. Cena. I really wanted them to pull the 6-man tag in this show, but they did that on Raw. But on Raw Cena cut a GREAT fucking promo, a MONEY promo and I was actually cool with the match. But then they did the finish to Raw, and I am back to not caring. Fuck off “creative.”
Winner: John Cena
Julian Bond: The first thing that may be coming out of everyone’s mouth is “JBL and Cena…AGAIN?!?”, which I kind of agree about. But it’s obvious that both wrestlers don’t have too much going on right now and to switch it with a Parking Lot Brawl should be pretty interesting. I take Cena F-Uing the “former” Texan on some type of car, truck, boat, or limo.
WINNER: John Cena
Andy Critchell: A match like this serves two purposes; to cover up the skills of an injured wrestler and to blow off the feud. Anyone can see that since making his return from the announce desk JBL has really been struggling. Obviously his back problems were not as resolved as once thought and he is likely in tremendous pain. This match will serve as a way to cover up JBL’s limitations while still delivering the physicality that generally signals the end of a feud. Hopefully this can be spun off into a Cryme Tyme/Simply Priceless feud, maybe they can even get involved in the match. That would not necessarily be a bad thing if Monday’s 6-man tag is any indication.
WINNER: John Cena
Jarrod Westerfeld: Dumb. Utterly fucking dumb. You had good build going into this match, and then someone in the back decides to pull a Attitude Era-esque angle before a pay-per-view that should write Cena off of the show entirely. It’s really stupid that this car angle was pulled off on the Raw before this event, much in the same way it was dumb of the WWE to have had Hogan ram a truck into an ambulance that housed a beat down and, I believe, bloodied Rock before heading into Wrestlemania. Maybe people don’t remember when this sort of angle used to work – either performed at the pay-per-view, or afterwards, and utilized to explain why a talent wouldn’t be on television for the next few months, thus missing a few pay-per-views. Doing it before a pay-per-view, and still having the advertised match with the talent that just ate a face full of fender coming at him roughly 45mph – yeah…this is TNA stupid.
If Cena shows up without any kayfabe injuries, and looks dominant in the match then the WWE really shot themselves in the foot with a well built storyline here. And for what? For a shock factor that didn’t need to be performed. JBL needs to win here, otherwise the WWE kills off the new found heat that Cena has gained through his latest run away from the championship. Time for JBL to show that he can finally beat Cena, especially considering that angle to end last week’s Raw. If not, then people are really going to turn on Superman, and hard.
Winner: JBL (because it makes sense)
Andy Clark: I actually have pretty good expectations for this match but I really don’t buy JBL beating ANYBODY at this point, let alone the unofficial No. 1 Contender.
Winner: John Cena
Jeremy Thomas: As absolutely retarded as the vehicular attempted homicide bullshit was, the build on this other then that has been decent. Just please, let this be the blow-off, and let JBL have some goddam time off–which, honestly, I think is the reason they pulled the Joy Ride edition of Raw bit, so that Steph and Shane can banish him after the warning they gave. Anyway, this will be like every other brawl these two have had, except in a parking lot. Ehh. Cena goes over, and JBL gets the time off–hopefully, to become a General Manager when he comes back.
WINNER: John Cena (STFU ~ON THE CONCRETE BY GAWD!~)
Matt Short: So Cena was only grazed? Thank god, I thought JBL had actually run him over and we’d have Horrible Head Wound Cena, which would just be icky. This should be reminiscent of Cena vs. Eddie Guerrero with their parking lot battle, so it should be a lot of fun. Cena did a great job of putting the match over with that awesome promo on Raw. I’m looking forward to a really good brawl, but not much else. There’s no where else for this feud to really go unless JBL wins, and I don’t see that happening.
Winner: John Cena
JT: What is JBL since returning? 2 – 24? Random jobber to welcome him back and then Kofi? Cena get the worst of it on RAW anyone? Never beaten Cena anyone? Beuller???
WINNER: John Cena
Michael O: So let me see if I have this straight…Cena beats JBL at J-Day, then he beats him again in a first blood match at 4th Night Stand, and now the two are going to go at it again? All this begs the question…”why?” I don’t have an answer, beyond the obvious “they don’t like each other” or, in non-kayfabe terms, “we don’t have anything else for them to do right now”, but I do have an answer as to who will win.
Winner: John Cena
Wendell Mitchell: Just so we all agree, attempted vehicular homicide has no place in wrestling. The build for their feud has been decent, especially JBL’s promos. JBL, as much as I missed him before he came back, has looked less entertaining with each match. Fortunately, they both can brawl their asses off. JBL will bleed like the wrestling god he once was and Cena will have his vengeance.
WINNER: John Cena (FU into/onto a windshield)
WWE Tag Team Title Match: The Miz and John Morrison © vs. Finlay and Hornswoggle vs. Jesse and Festus vs. Ryder and Hawkins
Dan Wilcox: While the addition of this match is kind of random, it has potential to be good as there are enough good workers in here to make it a fun match. Hopefully it’ll be tornado rules, which would almost ensure a good, chaotic match. Regardless, there only challengers here with a chance are Finlay and Hornswoggle, and that would be a horrible move. So let’s hope logic prevails and the awesome champions retain.
Winners: And STILL WWE Tag Team Champions, Miz and Morrison
Michael Weyer: Well, nice to see the tag belts defended on a PPV. I still can’t buy Finlay and Hornswoggle and Hawkins and Ryder are still too much Edge’s lackeys so expect the champs to retain. Just hope the match itself is decent enough to allow it.
WINNERS and still WWE Tag Team Champions: Miz and Morrison
Robert S. Leighty Jr.:It’s great that Miz and Morrison get another PPV shot. They are the most entertaining Tag Team on television right now (TNA included). I am amazed with the progression of The Miz, and still can’t believe this is the same guy I watched on Challenge shows on MTV. The Four Way stip would seem to indicate a new champion will be crowned, and I hope that is not the case. Hawkins and Ryder are the only other team involved that I could stomach with the straps at this point. It would make great tension within La Familia if they had gold, and Edge didn’t. This should be the opener, and if they keep things moving the crowd should get into this one.
Winner and Still WWE Tag Champions: Miz and Morrison
Shawn S. Lealos: No one in this match deserves the championship except M ‘n’ M, version 2. They also need to get Hornswoggle out of the title picture. I like the little guy but not as a contender.
WINNER: MnM, version 2
Jeff Small: Logic says seeing as this is a multi-man match, there will be new champions here; however, none of these other teams are as cool as the Miz and Morrison. I’m hoping the champs steal a win.
Winner: Miz & Morrison
Larry Csonka: I don’t want to sound negative here, but I do NOT like the idea of this match. Finlay and Hornswoggle I hate in the tag title scene, THOSE EDGE GUYS have like, NEVER won a match and Jesse and Festus are Jesse and Festus. I would much preferred that they went with the champs vs. The Hardy’s here, a great match to be sure and something that they could build on. Morrison and Miz are way above all these other guys right now, and I have no interest in the match. There is no reason for them to lose and I hope that they don’t.
Winner: MORRISON and MIZ
Julian Bond: This came out of nowhere, but in a good way. I personally think that the only team that should take it is Jesse & Festus since they’re so damn over with the crowds, but the fed seems so dead-set on keeping the straps on Miz and Morrison. I definitely don’t mind if they retain cause I think they’re awesome as hell, but if they’ve had the belts this long (about to go on a year in a few months) then the announcers REALLY need to start acknowledging this ala Kendrick and London to help put the two over that much more.
WINNER: John Morrison & The Miz
Andy Critchell: The most legitimate out of all the challenger teams in this match in Finlay and Hornswoggle which is really all you need to know. This match should be used as the first step in legitimizing another team so they can take a run at Miz & MORRISON for the titles down the line, why not Jesse and Festus?
WINNER: And still Tag Team Champions, Miz & MORRISON!
Jarrod Westerfeld: This seems…random. More random then some of the tag tandems featured on an ROH show. I can understand Finlay and Hornswoggle in this, again, as they would like to avenge a loss they ate at the last pay-per-view, but Hawkins, Ryder, Jesse and Festus? Why aren’t they just battling it out amongst themselves? Okay, I guess I missed something to set up this title bout, but this isn’t the tag division aide we’ve needed. Jimmy Yang and Shannon Moore had great chemistry with Morrison and Miz, so why not go with that? Hawkins and Ryder need more matches under their belt, and more wins to make us care about them, and Jesse and Festus had been pulled back so much that we need to be sold on them again. If there’s a God Morrison and Miz retain here and actually find a solid program for themselves.
Winner: The Miz and John MORRISON (via Divine Intervention)
Andy Clark: The Hardys should be in this but I’m still looking forward to this. Since it doesn’t appear to be an elimination match Miz & Morrison stand a chance, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they lose. A SummerSlam date with The Hardys could be money though.
Winners and STILL WWE Tag Team Champions: John Morrison & The Miz…Be jealous
Jeremy Thomas: Okay, so let’s get the easy ones out of the way. Finlay’s great, but in no situation should Hornswaggle ever, EVER hold another WWE Title again. Jesse and Festus are a comedy act and nothing more, and have no business being on a Pay-Per-View right now, much less winning the tag team straps on one. That brings us to Morrison and Miz, and the Edge-Heads. I know everyone’s on board for Miz and Morrison retaining, but I’m not so sure. The very nature of the match, a fatal four-way, gives the opportunity for the titles to change hands without the champs taking the clean pin. And a tag title reign would give Hawkins and Ryder a little more, as well as La Familia, a little more credibility as a stable instead of just a bunch of nobodies hanging around Edge a la Vincent in the nWo. I think Hawkins and Ryder get the win here through evil tactics, putting an end to a very deservedly long title reign by the champs.
WINNER: Hawkins & Rider (Hawkins pins Jesse; NEW WWE Tag Team Champions)
Matt Short: Ah the tired and true fatal four way tag title match. I hate to say it, but it looks like Morrison & Miz are set to lose their titles. They’ve been a damn good team though and had a lot of great defenses and matches, so I don’t think it’s anything too horrible. Hopefully they can stay a fixture of the tag team scene a little longer, but I kind of see them striking out on their own. So who will be the new champs? Finlay & Hornswoggle have a good chance since they’ve been feuding with the champs for awhile. Hawkins & Ryder? No, they’ve done jackshit with La Familia really. I want to like them and I was glad they were getting a heel push by being associated with Edge, but it hasn’t worked out. My picks are Jesse & Festus, the little gimmick that could. Here is a prime example of a team that so many were ready to hate that managed to not only get over but remain entertaining. Titles go to them for their hard work so far.
Winners: Jesse & Festus
JT: Okay, I get why the WWE does what it does with Hornswaggle. I really do. That being said, there is no way he should holding gold of any kind. The Edge guys? Way too busy on SmackDown (or so I think anyway; having seen SmackDown! yet). I like Jesse & Festus but to be honest I just don’t see any of these teams taking the belts off of Morrison & Miz; for that matter, why should the WWE do that anyway? They have been on a roll for months now and them being douchey, I’m-better-than-you champions only adds to their whole schtick.
WINNER: And STILL WWE Tag Team Champions, Morrison & Miz
Michael O: Edge’s droogies and Biscuits ‘n Retarded Gravy have as good a chance of leaving with the gold as I do. If “The E” wanted Finlay and son to wear the straps, me(e)thinks they’d have made that change at Night of Champions, so by process of elimination…
Winner: Miz & Morrison
Wendell Mitchell: Ladies and gentlemen, your tag division. There are only two choices here. The ab-tastic Shaman of Sexy and The Mighty Mizard should retain here because they’re winners. Hawkins and Ryder are Edge’s lackeys and with the wedding back on, it makes sense for them to finally look like something more than Edge clones that take choke slams and spine buster. Biscuits and Gravy are nothing more than a comedy act and Finlay’s awesomeness cannot overcome the fact that his son is a midget. Miz and Morrison entertain me. Rider and Hawkin’s mean nothing to me. It’s a fatal four way, so the choice is clear.
WINNER: And New WWE Tag Team Champs Hawkins & Rider (Jesse takes the pin)
Smackdown Diva’s Title Match: Michelle McCool vs. Natalya Neidhart
Dan Wilcox: Neidhart hasn’t shown too much in her short time on SmackDown but I have no doubt about what she is capable of. Similarly, Michelle is a good worker these days and I have a good feeling that these two will be able to produce a good match at least and if given enough time, a very entertaining one. And I think it needs to be very good if this Diva’s Championship has any chance of being successful or worthwhile. As for a winner, I can see it going either way. On the one hand, it’s always nice to have a face get a big moment with the first title win (eg Gail Kim) but on the other hand they may want to put the title on their best worker and a heel to set up a face chasing in the first real rivalry. Looking at my other predictions, there are a lot of heels wins, so we’ll go with the nice moment for Michelle here.
Winner: And FIRST Diva’s Champion, Michelle McCool
Michael Weyer: Putting aside how ugly the belt looks, surprised Michelle’s getting the nod instead of Victoria. But WWE has been pushing Natalya for a while and this is finally the chance to give her the big push. Having an actual wrestler as the first champ is logical (yes, I know that rarely counts) so we can hope good sense prevails.
WINNER and FIRST Diva’s Champion: The Anvil’s Daughter
Robert S. Leighty Jr.: This belt was seemingly created for Neidhart, and I can’t see her not winning. It would be better to have a heel win the strap and then the chase is on. I’m sure the fans won’t care at first because this title won’t be seen as anything important, but it gives the ladies on SmackDown something to shoot for.
Winner and First Diva’s Champion: Natalya Neidhart
Shawn S. Lealos: Natalya Neidhart needs this title reign to establish herself as a star. To take it from her this early would be a huge mistake.
WINNER: Natalya Neidhart
Jeff Small: If McCool wins, then there’s no one except for Victoria for her to feud with. If Natalya wins, we have McCool, Cherry, and Maria (when she debuts). Hence it is imperative for the heel to win setting up a chase.
Winner: Natalya
Larry Csonka: I am interested here, McCool has improved to be a “fine” wrestler, and Nattie is great. She’ll need all of that to lead McCool through the bout and I feel that if they get the TIME, TIME people, if they get the TIME to go out there and make people care, then it could be fine to pretty good. I am optimistic here, and will go with Nattie to win the first Tramp Stamp Title, and begin her reign as the top bitch on Smackdown.
Winner: Natalya Neidhart
Julian Bond: I really don’t see the need for TWO women’s championships (no offense to the women), but I’m assuming the main reason for creating this to help make Natalya Neidhart a big star in the division. In that case, it’ll work and she starts her reign here.
WINNER: Natalya Neidhart
Andy Critchell: Everyone knows that the money is in the chase so the babyface can’t win the title right away, can she? Besides, Michelle is already over as she is one hot piece of ass.
WINNER: and NEW Divas Champion, Natalya Neidhart!
Jarrod Westerfeld: Michelle has turned a lot of fans against her for her backstage antics with Natalya. Seriously, Michelle, just because you’re bucking on Taker’s hurst doesn’t mean you’re actually a veteran of the wrestling world. Michelle, you’re in no position to coach any of the other ladies on how to work a WWE match when you’re only decent at it yourself. But seeing as she does have some ties, and the WWE does like to support the ladies who have looks over talent, I can see Michelle getting the strap, despite the fact that this belt seems like a hand out made specifically for Natalya as an apology for not putting her on the brand that actually has a title for her to work towards. Blame it on Beth Phoenix having your look, and the WWE being fearful that no one would tell you two apart.
Winner: Michelle McCool (via Undertaker politics)
Andy Clark: Natalya is the heel and therefore will be a better first champion. Paying attention, TNA?
Winner and NEW Diva’s Champion: Natalya
Jeremy Thomas: Well, at least they got two of the best workers on SmackDown! here (though a turn by Victoria so we could have had Nattie-Vic would have been nice). The result really isn’t in question to me…Natalya beats Michelle clean, and becomes the first Ugly-Ass-Belt Champion.
WINNER: Natalya Neidhart (Sharpshooter; NEW WWE Divas Champion)
Matt Short: The belt might look like everyone’s worst idea of the WWE Divas, but at least the first title holder will be decided between two women who are pretty good in the ring. I haven’t really seen a whole lot from Natalya Neidhart, but she obviously has some skills. Michelle McCool is someone who has shown a lot of improvement. Both would be fine choices, but I think McCool will get the nod here. It might be better to start out the new title with a face winning it.
Winner: Michelle McCool
JT: This one is kind of tough for me. Michelle has gotten better, and they might be looking to reward her for that. On the other hand, WWE has shown it will not hesitate to put secondary titles on fresh talent almost immediately. They’ve been booking Natalya to be a beast; a tough, female version of her father if you will. Because of that I’m going to go ahead and say she gets the nod.
WINNER: And FIRST EVER SmackDown! Divas’ Champion, Natalya Neidhart
Michael O: Hey, it’s the “lost” match from Night of Champions. This is like a DVD extra, but with a really fuckin’ stupid looking belt.
Winner: Natalya
Wendell Mitchell: Mariah Carey. The Monarch. Reading Rainbow. These are a few of my favorite things. They also are the first things that come to mind when I look at the Diva’s Title. Personal aesthetic preferences aside, replicas of this belt will sell like hotcakes. Oh yeah, the participants. Neidhart’s been fun in her few in-ring forays. Michelle McCool has improved, but she’s no Trish Stratus (blasphemy alert – I never thought that highly of Trish either). Should be a competent match at worse and brushing against good at best.
WINNER: And First Diva’s Champ Michelle McCool (Sharpshooter countered into her heel hook thing)
ECW Title Match: Mark Henry © vs. Tommy Dreamer
Dan Wilcox: As much as I would love a Dreamer win, I don’t see it happening. Perhpas if this was Extreme Rules, he would have a shot. But it’s not and he doesn’t. This should be short and sweet but I fear the crowd will be dead for it and if it’s in the wrong place on the card, it could kill the show. Still, the Atlas/Henry alliance has a lot of potential and a win over Dreamer will be a good way to keep them getting heel heat and legitimizing Henry’s reign.
Winner: And STILL ECW Champion, Mark Henry
Michael Weyer: Ugh, do we really have to watch this? Henry isn’t as horrible as some say but Dreamer’s way past his prime. A chance he might get it as reward for long service to an ECW fave but I think we all know where this is going.
WINNER and still ECW Champion: Mark Henry
Robert S. Leighty Jr.: I would mark out like crazy if they gave Dreamer the strap. Even if was only a 2 day reign, it would be pretty awesome. Sadly, I can’t see it happening as Henry looks to have taken the place of the Big Show as the dominant monster champion. They need to build him up as that monster until they pull the trigger on Matt Hardy as ECW Champion.
Winner and still ECW Champion: Mark Henry
Shawn S. Lealos: Tommy Dreamer won’t ever be trusted to carry a title, regardless of his loyalty. Tony Atlas and Mark Henry is GOLD, though. Love the pairing. For the first time since Nation of Domination, I actually care about anything involving Mark Henry.
WINNER: Mark Henry
Jeff Small: Somebody’s gonna get their ass whipped.
Winner: Mark Henry
Larry Csonka: Mark Henry has been fun as of late, Dreamer is believable as the challenger still even though the barely wins. People should be into the match enough to make it seem important, and if they keep building Henry as a killing machine, that is a good thing. PLEASE do NOT have Atlas help him win.
Winner: Mark Henry
Julian Bond: I think that I am one of the few who actually likes the fact that the ECW title (or any title for that matter) is around Mark Henry’s waist. It’s awesome that they paired him with WWE legend Tony Atlas to help him get over and even better than he’s going to totally destroy Dreamer here to help further his cred. I just hope that it lasts more than 5 minutes.
WINNER: Mark Henry
Andy Critchell: Mark is just starting to gain momentum as the World’s Strongest Champion plus Teddy Atlas as his agent/manager/bag carrier/whatever has just started. It makes ZERO sense to take the belt off of Mark right now. So let’s all enjoy Mark splitting the wig of another sucker.
WINNER: And still ECW Champion, Mark Henry!
Jarrod Westerfeld: They’ve teased Tommy Dreamer going for the ECW title once more, but why didn’t they really pull the trigger on Tommy teasing a Wrestlemania upset over Chavo earlier this year? Oh well, I can’t buy Tommy beating the bigger, stronger Henry, especially seeing as the ratings are up around him, leading the company to trust Henry with a lengthier run.
Winner: Mark Henry (via ratings support)
Andy Clark: Yeah, Tommy Dreamer is winning a World Title in 2008.
Winner and STILL the World’s Strongest Champion (TM Tony Atlas): Mark Henry
Jeremy Thomas: God, I wish Dreamer had a chance. I really, REALLY wish Dreamer had a chance. I’ve always been a huge Tommy fan, and he’s never gotten the respect he’s due in terms of gold. And no, I don’t count a twenty-five minute reign as ECW Champion…if you can’t take the belt home for the night, the reign doesn’t count. Unfortunately, Henry’s being built as the ECW Monster, and just started his reign. Tommy’s here to be fed to Henry, but at least it should be an entertaining brawl before Henry beats him.
WINNER: Mark Henry (World’s Strongest Slam; STILL ECW Champion)
Matt Short: I don’t think anyone expected Mark Henry’s ECW Title reign to turn out as good as it has. He’s been a very entertaining heel and adding Tony Atlas to the mix has helped him a bit. I’ve said before that I’ve never really been as anti-Henry as others have been in the past, but now I actually care about the guy’s storylines. I don’t think this match is going to be some classic match, but I expect Henry to dominate until Dreamer gets in a big flurry of offense to bring ever so close to winning the title. In the end Henry will retain.
Winner: Mark Henry
ECW Title Match: Mark Henry © vs. Tommy Dreamer
JT: Mark Henry has been booked entirely too strong at this point that taking the title off him a month later would be stupid and pointless. I’m a Dreamer fan like most of us, but the timing is just not right.
WINNER: And STILL ECW Champion, Mark Henry
Michael O: Holy Brock vs. Holly, Batman! Sorry Tommy bear, but if you look up foregone conclusion in the dictionary, you’ll see a picture of this match. And a picture of my penis.
Winner: Mark Henry
Wendell Mitchell: I like Dreamer. And because I’m weird, I actually prefer his knock off theme to “Man in a Box.” His wife is hot and every time I think about Heart Shaped Box, I think of her. Dreamer’s gimmick is that he never wins and I don’t see that changing Sunday. Mark Henry is far from my favorite wrestler, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him. He just looks like the guy that will “beat him up, beat him up, break his neck, break his neck.” I truly believe Mark’s reign will change a few opinions about him.
WINNER: And still the World’s Strongest Champion Mark Henry (World’s Strongest Slam)
World Title Match: CM Punk © vs. Batista
Dan Wilcox: I’m not feeling good about this match. It could be really good but I think that depends on Batista and his opinion of CM Punk. If he doesn’t view Punk as being on the level of himself and other world champions, he’ll half-ass his way through this match and it might well bomb. If he’s determined to help legitimize Punk and Punk’s reign, he’ll bring his A game and it could be a fantastic match. I’m being presumptuous, but I fear for the former while I hope for the latter. The winner is also in a lot of doubt. Punk has been kept relatively strong since winning the title and his win has sparked a ratings increase and WWE may have him penned as their next mega-star, following in the footsteps of Cena, Orton, Batista and Edge. On the other hand, Punk may be nothing more than a transitional champion and I think that that would be a shame. All that said, we’re all winners because at Summerslam, we’re pretty much guaranteed a big match: Cena vs. Punk or Cena vs. Batista. I may be overzealous in going with my heart here, but I think Punk will put The Animal to sleep.
Winner: And STILL World Heavyweight Champion, CM Punk
Michael Weyer: I know some are saying Punk loses, a transitional champion but surely WWE has to see how over he is with fans now as champ and ratings are up. Batista will bring out a more brutal side, edging a bit towards heel but in the end, I see Punk retaining en route to the inevitable money feud with Cena.
WINNER and STILL World Champion: CM PUNK BABY!!
Robert S. Leighty Jr.: I was worried about Punk, but the fact that ratings (especially during his segments) have been strong, and that he received the pre-PPV beating, I think he is going over Batista. It’s a good place to start since Batista basically did the damage to Edge before Punk picked the bones, and it will also immediately put Punk on a higher level if he gets the win over someone like Batista. This is a fresh match-up, and I am looking forward to seeing what these 2 men can do in the ring.
Winner and still World Heavyweight Champion: CM Punk
Shawn S. Lealos: Like I mentioned with Natalya, CM Punk needs to win here to establish himself as a main event wrestler. If Batista wins this match, CM Punk will be ruined and will not recover. He also needs to win clean, because if he doesn’t, he will start to look like Rey Mysterio during his title reign. Punk can go, but he needs clean wins and more mic time to prove he belongs here.
WINNER: CM Punk
Jeff Small: If Punk loses, then the last three weeks were wasted. Punk needs a win here (especially a clean one) in order to show that he is at least at the level of Rey Mysterio (okay, he technically already has one more win than Mysterio). I see Punk winning this match leading to a Batista heel turn and a rematch at the Slam.
Winner: CM Punk
Larry Csonka: They are in an interesting place here. It is similar to when they gave Edge the title against Cena. They wanted it to be a transitional thing, to break up the Cena run, and that was that. But he got insanely over as a heel, the ratings were good and that is history, Edge is a top guy. CM Punk is getting over, they drew one good rating and even though the rating was down is week two, his segment with Kane drew the highest rating (minus overrun) on the show. So he’s looking good from that standpoint. It will be interesting to see if they take the title off of him and keep him in the main mix, ala Edge, of if they let him run with the title a bit longer. Another thing is that I could see them pulling a heel turn with BOTH men, I am just not sure which one they will do. Punk has been treated like the little brother, and that could make him snap and get a rougher edge. A Batista loss could send him over the edge, since he essentially handed Punk the title. I honestly don’t know what direction they will go, so I will say that the champ retains. It’s an interesting time to be sure.
Winner: CM PUNK
Julian Bond: Repeating everyone else’s thoughts on this: THANK GOD PUNK HAS THE BELT!! I honestly don’t care if he has it for a week, a month, or a year, the fact is that he will forever have the title of “former World Heavyweight Champion”. With that on the side, I really hope that he continues his reign here by beating Batista. I do have a feeling that Kane may be involved possibly costing Batista the match, but either way, I hope that Punk survives to fight another day as champ.
WINNER: CM Punk
Andy Critchell: I can see this going one of two ways and they are both intriguing; Punk resorts to shady means the retain the title turning heel under the premise that no one believes in him and no one respects him OR Punk takes a vicious beating at the hands of Batista but never gives up and Batista has to use shady means to win, turning heel under the premise that he is the “true champion” and the belt should have been his all along. Contrary to IWC opinions, I’d like Punk to remain babyface and chase for the title.
WINNER: And NEW World Heavyweight Champion, Batista!
Jarrod Westerfeld: If there is a God, Punk retain and looks like he actually belongs in the same ring as the main eventers. That’s all I’m going to say about this, because if I dwell on it, the more I’ll start to think that Punk is not only going to lose, but end up in the lower card come SummerSlam. Thank you Triple H politics for that scary thought.
Winner: CM Punk (via DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?)
Andy Clark: Punk vs. Cena could be big at SummerSlam, but I just can’t picture Punk actually beating Batista. Throwing Kane into the mix on Monday helps solve that problem.
Winner: No Contest (Kane attacks both men)
Jeremy Thomas: First off, it needs to be said that someone needs to turn here. Either Punk turns and becomes the heel champion that we all know he can excel as, or Batista turns and becomes an evil monster again. I think the latter is more likely and would be more effective, because fans are really starting to buy into Punk, and it would be too early to let that face run die. This is a kind of tough one to pick, because on one hand, things look swimming with Punk as champion. Ratings have been good, and the crowd is really starting to love him. On the other hand, they haven’t booked him too well as champion so far. Ultimately, I’m going with my heart over my head, and predicting Punk beating Batista cleanly (perhaps by a sudden flash pin), causing Big Dave to just snap and turn heel by demolishing Punk.
WINNER: CM Punk (Schoolboy Roll-Up; STILL World Heavyweight Champion)
Matt Short: This is a real nail-biter for a lot of people. Punk’s winning the title has actually allowed him to show some personality. He’s getting real promo time against the upper tier of stars on Raw and people are reacting well to him as champion. The biggest set back though was he really got bitched out by Batista on Monday and the worry is that Big Dave will work lazy at the PPV thus making Punk look bad. I don’t think it’ll come to that, but for Punk to keep any kind of credibility he’s got to beat a big name and do it cleanly. The question is, will the temptation to do Cena vs. Batista at Summerslam be too great or will Punk just be the stepping stone to that match? I’m going with the title retention, leading maybe into a multi-man match at Summerslam.
Winner: CM Punk
JT: WWE would have to be retarded to have Batista get the win here. They weren’t born yesterday; they have their finger on the pulse of the wrestling world and they know how popular Punk is. Hell, a slight ratings increase alone is probably worth them not having the title switch hands. Bottom line, they have to know that this would be a SUPER burial for Punk if they were to actually have Big Dave pull out the victory.
WINNER: And STILL World Heavyweight Champion, CM Punk
Michael O: Ever since Monday, my gut has been telling me that Punk takes the Pepsi challenge and becomes a heel. What’s that? You haven’t heard of the Pepsi challenge, where Pepsi challenges you to try their drink and turn heel? You have now. Either way, Punk being voted most likely champ to lose his gold tells me that he is actually the most likely to keep it.
Winner: CM Punk
Wendell Mitchell: I’ve never been a huge fan of Punk’s (always preferred Colt Cabana personally) but even I would like to see him keep the title past this PPV. Batista needs to turn heel because they won’t turn Cena and you know that’s a money match down the line. Hopefully Punk gets some offense in before Batista brushes him aside like the “King of Indies” that he is only for Kane to electrocute Batista’s testicles or something. You know how Kane gets carried away during his yearly push.
WINNER: And still World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk (No Contest)
WWE Title Match: HHH © vs. Edge
Dan Wilcox: This is a weird one because the entire build has focused on Edge while Triple H has taken a back seat with the occasional four-minute squash match against Chavo. That has me thinking that The Game is retaining here, On the other hand, the whole Vickie/Edge scenario kind of throws the whole match on its head or it could be a La Familia hoax that ends in Triple H getting screwed out of the title. Hopefully, it’s the latter because it would be a shame for The Game to come over and take away a lot of the heat this group has worked hard to earn this year. Either way, I don’t think that this is the end of the rivalry, far from it; it’s very much the beginning, and with that in mind, I think the WWE Championship will once again be Rated R!
Winner: And NEW WWE Champion, Edge
Michael Weyer: Very surprised we haven’t seen this before as it’s one of the few big matchups WWE hasn’t done. It’s tough to predict as HHH is top dog but Edge is a wild heel and having him win this back after losing the World title makes sense. I expect Vickie to do a swerve and reveal she and Edge are still together, their antics costing HHH the belt and letting us have Edge on top again.
WINNER and NEW WWE Champion: Edge
Robert S. Leighty Jr.: This is a feud that I though we would have seen headline a PPV already, but it’s here now, and it should be a good match. There is some history between the two due to the DX/Rated RKO feud, and I am saddened that hasn’t been mentioned. After all, it was a match involving Edge and Orton where HHH tore his quad (for the 2nd time). I think HHH keeps the title until SummerSlam, and it’s possible we get these 2 meeting again in a stipulation match.
Winner and Still WWE Champion: HHH
Shawn S. Lealos: This is the one area I don’t know what is going to happen. Edge has killed my accuracy ratings thanks to his feud with Undertaker. I can’t call Edge matches. I say Edge loses thanks to Vicky costing him the match. Edge needs to chase Triple H for awhile and win it later in controversial style, but not here and not yet.
WINNER: HHH
Jeff Small: Seeing as this is a Edge match, I expect a La Familia SWERVE as Vicky planted the video for Triple H to find. This leads to Vicky turning on Triple H (ha!) and helping her husband win the WWE Title. That or I see the Undertaker making his triumphant return only to swerve Triple H and cost him the title. Regardless of who swerves who, the Rated R Superstar will be on top of Smackdown come the end of the PPV.
Winner: Edge
Larry Csonka: I am torn here. They could pull shenanigans and have Edge win the title, or they have HHH retain, Edge and Vickie implode and her bring back Taker. I am torn, so I go coin flip!
Winner: EDGE
Julian Bond: This should be a great main event. Edge is still involved with the whole La Famila/Vicki stituation, so HHH will definitely take the W here. It’s just the question of how that will determine if they are destined to have a rematch at Summerslam. Should be an excellent match none the less.
WINNER:HHH
Andy Critchell: Why would Triple H drop the title here? He and Edge have barely interacted at all and while I’m sure both guys will wrestle a great match, this feud has no real heat. Besides, Edge has bigger fish to fry with Vickie and the Wedding Planner and whoever else they cook up for those wacky kids.
WINNER: And still WWE Champion, Triple H!
Jarrod Westerfeld: Poor Edge…he’s losing his pull on SmackDown and going to have to put over the one guy that flunked as a powerful draw towards the end of the Attitude Era. If Triple H couldn’t do the right thing at Night of Champions, then I don’t see him having a lasting program with Edge. This may be the one and only bout these two have, as I can see Triple H moving on to destroy another heel contender to his thrown at the next pay-per-view (that’s SummerSlam, right? I can’t remember the order anymore).
Winner: Triple H (via the usual)
Andy Clark: Edge will NOT be the next WWE Champion. The next WWE Champion will be ballin’, mark my words. Edge tries to cheat with his Edge guys but the lights go out and SmackDown’s newest member gets some revenge.
Winner and STILL WWE Champion: Triple H
Jeremy Thomas: Again, this is a heart vs. head situation. I would love to see Edge win the big belt via evil, nasty tactics, and watch the dynamic of Edge using McMahon/Helmsley methods to beat the Game AT his own game. On the other hand, Triple H has been SmackDown’s champion for only a short time, and they probably want the SD fans to get used to seeing him with gold around his waist. Two things tip the balance here; one is that I have Henry and Punk retaining, and I don’t see all three titles staying with their champions. The other is that, in order to have the wedding look all fine and rosy until the last moment when it falls apart, Edge has to win so he doesn’t flip out on Vickie like before. Either way, it should be a great match.
WINNER: Edge (Spear following La Familia Tactics; NEW WWE Champion)
Matt Short: Triple H hasn’t been seen on Smackdown all that much from what I’ve noticed. He makes one or two appearances per show, but we’ve yet to have a show be all about him and Edge. No, it’s all about the drama surrounding Edge and to that effect I think we’re going to see Triple H keep the title and the feud will go on for another month. After this match, they can kick the feud into a higher gear. I’m actually looking forward to this and I really hope these two work well together.
Winner: Triple H
JT: Boy this is tough. On one hand, you have Triple H who seemingly JUST won the title. On the other you have Edge who JUST lost the title. Trips is “The F’N Game”, yet Edge has the GM, eight wrestlers, three refs, a hammock and two ceiling fans all in his back pocket. I can’t see Edge winning, but I also can’t see a PPV where not a single title changes hands (if I’m wrong about Shelton, which I very well could be). I dunno, I feel Triple H was sent to SmackDown! (as champion) to help the transition on to MyNetwork so I just can’t see him dropping the title.
WINNER: And STILL WWE Champion, Triple H
Michael O: Aww man, I haven’t watched Smackdown yet and thus am unable to have the events that transpired figure into my prediction. All along I’ve been assuming that Hunter gets fucked over but good, though these past few days I haven’t been so sure. There has been much in the way of title switches lately and I think Summerslam might serve as a better platform for Edge to take the strap than this show. They haven’t ended a world title match in a DQ for a few months, so if ‘Tista/Punk doesn’t end in one, I’m going to say that this one does, perhaps even due to Underference. There’s money in a good Hunter/Edge feud, and I think in the end, Edge will walk away with the gold. But we’re far from the end, this thing is just gettin’ started babies!
Winner: HHH
Wendell Mitchell: As a guy that’s a bit under whelmed by Edge and the Familia, I still recognize that he is the top heel. As fun as it may be too see HHH fall to someone utilizing his own play book, I think the Game overcome the odds and sets up a rematch at Summer Slam. Love conquers all.
WINNER: And still WWE Champion HHH (Pedigree)
