NEW… DAY ROCKS: New Day came to the ring, and cut a promo about the tag title match on Sunday. Woods and Big E made fun of Kofi’s old man shoes, and then vowed to leave the MITB PPV with the titles. Enzo and Cass made their way out to the ring, and New Day was excited to see them. Enzo did his usual shtick, and the crowd loved it. Cass said MITB was their first shot last the tag titles, and they are going all in and walking out with the titles. He said they’re still cool with New Day, and even called their unicorn horns dildos. Apparently they are teaming tonight (I guess against The Vaudevillains and Club). Cass then even took the time to mock Kofi’s shoes. Cass then questioned Woods as to the whereabouts of Francesca II, and then revealed she spent the night with Enzo and that he had his lips all over her. Enzo said he played her like Louie Armstrong, and had her going all night long. Woods said he was the only one that blows his girl in response, and this was about to lead to a verbal joust as Kofi called it, when The Vaudevillains arrived and called them children. Aiden English sang about winning the titles, and the Club arrived. Anderson just wanted them all to show up and asked if this was the Camp WWE Talent show. They’re the fun police, and come Sunday, they will be the tag team champions. Cass, along with New Day and Enzo, spelled out that the heels were in fact SAWFT to close out the segment. The big tag match is next. I liked that the tag title feud got to kick off the show instead of the usual suspects, and even appreciate the lighter tone to start. It was fun and entertaining, but could have used a bit more of a serious tone around the title talk. Also, Doc and Karl do not need to be making “Camp WWE” jokes, you can’t do that and appear to be bad asses. But overall I liked it.

New Day w/Woods, Enzo and Cass vs. The Vaudevillains and The Club: JIP with Kofi wrestling in his old man shoes, and having success against English. Gotch tagged din, only to become a victim of the unicorn stampede. Enzo tagged din, English shoved Gotch out of the way and took a high cross from Enzo, but that allowed Gotch to attack. Gallows tagged in to continue the heat, slamming Enzo repeatedly. After the expected heat on Enzo, he made the hot tag to big Cass. Cass cleaned house, the Vaudevillains tried to bail and that led to Kofi hitting a sweet over the corner dive to send us to break. After the commercial, Big E worked over Gotch with an abdominal stretch. The heels eventually distracted Big E, Gallows hit a clothesline and they took the heat back. Another solid heat, but the crowd was into it more when they were working over Enzo; he’s simply more sympathetic and easier to cheer for. Big E finally made the hot tag to Kofi, he ran wild hitting a dropkick and boom drop on Anderson. He then missed trouble in paradise, but would hit the high cross for a near fall that Gotch broke up. It broke down from there, and the Club hit the magic killer on Kofi to pick up the win. That was a strong match, and I love that the first 30-minutes of the show were dedicated to the tag title feud.

– We get clips of the Shield’s debut.

– We get a video with Darren Yong and Bob Backlund.

– Backstage, Shane meets with Stephanie. Shane says he was away last week for personal reasons, and said she can have Smackdown if she wants. They then argue over who will control Raw and Smackdown, and Citizen Kane is back! He’s here to offer his services. Stephanie calls him psychotic, and he presents his resume. He also has a letter of recommendation from Taker. Stephanie leaves, and Shane asks Kane about his ideas of Smackdown.

– Zack Ryder makes fun of Sheamus backstage; Sheamus arrives and announces they have a match tonight. He then promises to take care of Apollo Crews at MITB.

– We get another Shield video package.

– The Shining Stars are still doing video packages.

– Titus O’Neil made his way to the ring for a match, but Rusev attacked him and beat him down on the stage. Rusev repeatedly slammed him to the ramp, and then applied the accolade. Referees had to run out to pull Rusev off of O’Neil. They failed because he got the hold again. This is fine and all to build to the match, but I don’t know, maybe having Titus work some matches and win could have been part of this as well.

– We get another Shield video package.

The Ambrose Asylum with Reigns and Rollins: Ambrose claimed his show was back by popular demand, and says MITB feels like another Mania show to him. He played to the crowd, hyped up Reigns vs. Ambrose, and then brought out “the scum of the Earth,” Seth Rollins. Ambrose even gave him a little hug, and Rollins looked completely disgusted by that. He then introduced Reigns. Ambrose asked Rollins about his knee, and Rollins brought up his WWE Network special and claimed to be 100% and ready to go. Ambrose asked him if his face hurt, and then said it was killing him. He and Reigns chuckled. Ambrose asked Reigns how the big easy was treating him, discussed 99 cent margaritas with Rollins and then said to relax and have fun. Ambrose said they used to have so much fun in the ring together, and added that they hadn’t been together in a long time. Rollins did admit that they did have good times together, talked about a Sushi train and finding Ambrose passed out. Rollins said that they dominated together, bringing up their triumphs over the Wyatts and Evolution. They agreed that Batista got sent packing, and owes them because he became a big movie star. He quickly turned tide and aid his best times were when he turned on them and when he cashed in and ruined Reigns’ moment at Mania. They got back to Sunday’s match, where Reigns promised to walk in and out with the title on Sunday. Rollins said that he never lost the title and Reigns never beat him for the title. Ambrose was clearly egging them on as Rollins claimed that Reigns only had the title because his knee gave out, but Reigns did earn the title, beating Ambrose. Hell he even beat Triple H. Reigns earned it, but made sure to mention that he never beat him. Rollins claimed to be better and to always be two steps ahead of Reigns at all times. Rollins did everything on his own, while he held Reigns hand and made him. Ambrose disputed that, bringing up J&J, The Authority, and Kane. Reigns said Rollins screwed him on his own, broke up the Shield on his own. They had Rollins’ back, but he ruined it all. Reigns said that Rollins will have his spotlight, and on Sunday, he will be the guy because he beat Rollins. FINALLY, Ambrose dropped the tease that he could win MITB (I was waiting for that) and that he could cash in on Sunday, and he could walk out the champion. Rollins then shoved Ambrose into Reigns, and e had a big brawl. Reigns dropped Rollins with the Superman punch, and then Ambrose hit Dirty Deeds on Reigns to stand tall. It took a bit to get going, and the crowd was really cold at points, but that ended up being a very good segment. They hit all of the notes between Reigns and Rollins that they needed to, and also weaved in the Ambrose tease of a MITB win and cash in. It also continues that slow burn for a Shield triple threat down the line.

– Stephanie McMahon spoke with Ambrose backstage, and was upset he made it all about himself. She booked him in the main event against Chris Jericho.

– Natalya and Becky Lynch are on commentary. They face Charlotte and Dana Brooke at MITB.

Non-Title Match: Champion Charlotte w/Dana Brooke vs. Paige: No entrances for either. They had some odd misses early on a kick spot, which caused the camera to quickly go to commentary. Paige took control, hitting a kick and covering for 2. Charlotte got a small package, and then went for a figure four, but Paige countered. Charlotte kept going for the hold, Paige kept countering, and Charlotte got sent to the floor. Dana rolled Charlotte back in, Paige kicker her in the head and hit ram-Paige and picked up the win. The match was short, and not good at all. They are already teasing issues between Charlotte and Dana, which seem way too trussed. Also, Paige gets what is basically a clean win over Charlotte, which will likely mean nothing, just like the one she got on Charlotte during the Natalya feud. The booking of the ladies has been really poor.

– Renee Young tried to interview Cesaro, and Sami Zayn arrived. Cesaro thought he was getting swerved, and Zayn said he as just there to help. Cesaro questioned if he went into people’s homes without knocking. He then called Zayn a child, which offended Zayn. Zayn felt he was being disrespected, and Cesaro reminded him he had been there for years and Zayn still had a lot to prove.

– Post commercial, Charlotte and Dana argued with lots of Charlotte yelling. Charlotte wants a protégé, not someone ruining things or trying to take over.

Sheamus vs. Zack Ryder: Sheamus attacked right away, beating down Ryder and hitting the clubbing strikes in the ropes. Ryder fought back, sent Sheamus to the floor and hit a dropkick off the apron. Back in, Ryder hit the broski boot, went up top and hit the elbro drop for a near fall. Sheamus countered the rough Ryder, it the brogue kick and that was that. Ryder got some run, and Sheamus won, which is what it needed to be since Sheamus has a PPV (kick off) match on Sunday. Post match, Sheamus tied to beat down Ruder, but Crews arrived and fought him off. Sheamus ran away into the crowd.

– Kane and Shane were still having their meeting, Kevin Owens arrived and anted to talk with Stephanie. Owens then decided to rat out Del Rio for only showing up 20-minutes ago, which he felt was unprofessional. Owens felt he should be taken out of the MITB match. Del Rio claimed that Owens had airport security stop him for five hours. Kane put an end to the madness here, and said they needed a team building exercise. Del Rio and Owens vs. The Lucha Dragons. If The Lucha Dragons win, they get their spots in the MITB match, Shane agreed to this. Shane is getting along well with a man that once hooked his testicles up to a car battery.

Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn: They worked a good back and forth opening stretch, and then Cesaro cut off Zayn with an uppercut and sent him to the floor. We took a commercial break. Post break, we got more back and forth, leading to a near fall off of a high cross by Zayn. Cesaro then went into the uppercut train, Zayn fought off the swing, but ate the double stomp (to the face) for a near fall. Zayn fired up, decapitated Cesaro with a clothesline and the hit the Michinoku driver for a near fall. Zayn went up top, but Cesaro ht the dropkick and then the superplex for a good near fall that the crowd reacted to well. Cesaro then went for the neutralizer, Zayn countered and they did a series of reversals, and Zayn then hit the code red out of a powerbomb counter for the win. They fit a ton into a short time frame, and it was a blast. They know how to work together, and maximize their opportunities. That was a great little TV sprint.

Cena and Styles Sign Paper: Michael Cole is hosting the contract signing. Cena was introduced first, and spoke about the “rowdy crowd” ad also hyped MITB like another Mania. Cena said for 15-years, people have been asking about Styles vs. Cena. For whatever reason, Styles was never given the shot and told he doesn’t belong. He respects Styles for traveling the world (ROH, PWG, NJPW were name dropped) and admitted that Styles had won more than 15 major titles, and is a major star that never got the chance. He says they are two men that can walk around without a title, and be called champ, and this is a history-making match. Cena then banished Cole, and called out Styles. Styles arrived and said he turned Cena’s world upside down two weeks ago. At MITB, he plans to do it again, and when the bell rings, he will run circles around Cena and be the one saying “you can’t see me.” There are two contracts, one for a singles match, and one for a match where Styles can have the Club at ringside. Cena basically said if Styles signed the contract with the Club at ringside, he’s a bitch. But if he signs the other, they can recapture the magic of the first night they met. Styles took this to mean that Cena thinks he can’t win, as Styles ran down Cena’s resume. Styles said what if he was here 15-years ago, well, Cena wouldn’t have been a 15-time champion, wouldn’t have won the Rumble, wouldn’t be in crappy movies and he would have all of that, and he would be the face that runs this place. Cena told him to shut up, and told him he was full of bullshit and acted like a baby, entitled indy dude. Cena says he has the chance to do it now to prove himself now. Cena then threatened to send him back to Japan, where Styles left his balls. Styles signed the one on one contract, and claimed he’s not every other indy guy. When it’s over, maybe Cena will get the message, because, “your time is up, my time is now.” That was an awesome segment/overall great hard sell for the show’s co-main event, with great fire from both guys and I am really excited for Sunday’s PPV match.

Lucha Dragons vs. Kevin Owens and Alberto Del Rio: If Owens and Del Rio lose, the Lucha Dragons get their MITB spots. They wisely played footage of Owens and Del Rio previously having issues as tag partners. Del Rio went right on the attack, working over Kalisto and hanging him in the tree of WHOA. He and Owens argued a bit, but then worked together and beat down Kalisto. Owens teased leaving, and Kalisto got a roll up for 2. They argued again, allowing the Dragons to fight back and hit stereo dives as we took a commercial break. After the break, the Dragons were still in control until Del Rio took out Kalisto with a clothesline. He and Owens argued again though, allowing Kalisto to send Del Rio into Owens and he then hit Salida del sol. Del Rio rolled to the floor to save himself, Owens yelled at him but then throe whim back in to stop the count out. Cara then got the hot tag, Owens ran in to put a stop to that, pulled Del Rio to his corner and tagged in. Cara got to run wild, Kalisto went for a dive but ate the barricade when Del Rio sidestepped him. Owens then hit the pop up powerbomb to pick up the win. Post match, Del Rio laid out Owens with a superkick and stood tall. The match was perfectly fine, Owens and Del Rio were never losing, but they needed to create more drama for MITB and also some meaning for the match to actually take place.

– We get video from the Marine 5, with the Miz.

– Owens complained to Stephanie backstage, and is pissed at Del Rio. Apparently Shane put Zayn on commentary for the main event. Stephanie then put Owens on commentary as well. Del Rio arrived, and he demanded that he be on commentary as well. She then made him the timekeeper. Stephanie left as Owens and Del Rio argued.

– Shane and Stephanie argued backstage. Shane made Cesaro the ring announcer for the main event (prepare for the big cluster ending, with all the MITB guys, a ladder and someone grabbing the case to close the show). Stephanie made fun of Kane, calling him psycho and the worst choice to run Smackdown. Citizen Kane arrived, and Shane said they needed stability for Smackdown, and he isn’t getting the job. KANE BROUGHT UP THE CAR BATTERY AND TESTICLES THING! All is forgiven, because all I want is some continuity from “the longest episodic weekly TV show.”

– Zayn, Ambrose and Cesaro vs. Jericho, Del Rio and Owens is set for Smackdown.

Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho: Owens ran down everyone on commentary as Jericho and Ambrose went back and forth. Ambrose sent Jericho to the floor, and Ambrose hit the suicide dive. Ambrose slapped the headset off of Owens, allowing Jericho to attack and take control back. Jericho hit the springboard dropkick and sent Ambrose to the floor, and Owens talked shit to Ambrose. He and Zayn then argued and all of the extras on the floor threatened to fight as we went to a commercial break. Post break, Jericho was in control and slapping Ambrose around. Ambrose then started to put together a comeback, they battled up top and Ambrose fought off a superplex but Jericho scored with the walls. Ambrose made the ropes, leading to Jericho arguing with the ref. Lionsault by Jericho followed for another near fall. Owens was in complete burial mode on commentary, which is way better than Raw’s usual commentary. Ambrose again made a comeback, up top and hit the elbow drop for a near fall. They went back and forth, it was fine but lacked something. Ambrose went for dirty deeds, but Jericho countered and went for the code breaker, countered and Ambrose hit dirty deeds for the win. This was really solid overall, but just missing something, like most of their outings.

– Post match it was go time as everyone brawled. Zayn hit a big dive to wipe out most everyone, and Jericho was left by himself to climb a ladder, grab the MITB briefcase and pose like he actually won it.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
An overall good show tonight, focused on the build to the MITB PPV on Sunday and highlighted by two great segments (Ambrose/Reigns/Rollins and Cena/Styles). The only thing I really felt was bad was the ladies segment, other than that, I felt that they accomplished their goal this week, and that was to set the stage for the PPV, and in a rare occasion, they did some things that really did make me want to see the show.
