Breaking Kayfabe with Terry “Sabu” Brunk

Much like the Breaking Kayfabe interview with Shane Douglas, this perfectly illustrates the concept that Sean and co. were going for when developing this series. The interview isn’t Sean talking to Sabu, Sean is talking to Terry about *being* Sabu. Amongst the topics involved are Sabu’s younger days growing up in a wrestling family, and being around his famous uncle, who protected the business and his character to such a degree that even his own children called him “Sheik.” Sabu opens about his early years in the business, where his uncle was extra hard on him, and they didn’t tell anyone that Sabu was his nephew, and then his first twenty matches were draws. Then he jobbed for about five years straight, to teach him about humility. He’d even travel to work an Indy shot and when he got there, the promoter would say “your uncle called and said you’re going under tonight.” They also dive into how Sabu is doing nowadays as far his physical condition from his years in the ring, which naturally leads to a discussion of drugs in wrestling, Sabu mostly took painkillers and muscle relaxers. Sean also brings up a good point, of how if Sabu works for an Indy fed and doesn’t do a huge dive or break a table, then the fans will feel cheated, Sabu agrees, but concedes that he painted himself into that corner.

Aside from wrestling, they talk about his life away from the ring, such as what TV shows and music he likes. Sabu admits that he loves real housewives and Sean replies “Sabu’s a bitch!” It may not read that well, but it was hilarious. They talk about Sabu’s marriage to Terry Funk’s goddaughter and Sean asks if any wrestling marriages work and Sabu replies “I think Benoit’s went pretty well!” It’s actually impressive that he made that joke, since he’s usually so quiet and reserved, which is how he’s always been, but, he attributes that to knowing Sean and feeling comfortable opening up around him.

This is a very interesting, albeit short, interview. But, that's part of it's charm. Sean and Sabu pretty much stay on track, and the result is a very different look at Sabu.
