King of Trios 2015 Semi-Final Round Match
Team AAA (Fénix, Drago & Aero Star) vs. The Wrecking Crew (Max Smashmaster, Blaster McMassive & Flex Rumblecrunch)
The Dev Corp jump Team AAA before the bell. They take turns pummeling Fénix in their half of the ring. Fénix catches Smashmaster with a boot. He tries a springboard Frankensteiner but Smashmaster counters mid-move with a powerbomb into the corner. They toss Fénix out after beating him down a little more. Star jumps in but is taken down almost immediately with a fallaway slam from McMassive. Rumblecrunch and Smashmaster take down Drago and Fénix on the floor. McMassive gives Star Lariat Tubman. He hits a tope con hilo over the ring post, but Drago and Fénix avoid it and McMassive lands on his partners! Fénix then hops to the top of the post and lands a twisting plancha onto all of the Dev Corp. Drago then lands a twisting tope onto McMassive and Rumblecrunch. Star does a springboard back senton onto Smashmaster on the floor. In the ring, McMassive eats offense from all of Team AAA in the corner. Drago and Fénix wipe out Rumblecrunch and Smashmaster with stereo tope con hilo’s McMassive catches Star’s crossbody attempt. Drago and Fénix kick his legs out until he’s weak enough for Star to spike him with a crucifix driver. That gives Team AAA the win at 7:21! They got right down to brass tacks with the isolation and come back, with no wasted time and a really fun fight. They also did a solid job making it seem like the Dev Corp weren’t as cohesive without Bakabella there to assist and coach. A strong way to start the night. ***
King of Trios 2015 Semi-Final Round Match
Team Fight Club: Pro (Trent Seven, Tyler Bate & Daniel Moloney) vs. The Bullet Club (AJ Styles & The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson))
Moloney replaces MK McKinnan, pictured above. Bate blocks a superkick from Nick. Bate lowers Nick’s leg to the mat instead of taking a shot. They exchange wristlocks. Nick negotiates into a side headlock. Bate cartwheels his way free. Nick brings him to the corner and stomps him down. Bate counters a whip to the corner. He gets a headlock and slams the heel of his boot into Nick’s face. Bate headscissors Nick to the corner. Nick sends him to the apron and dropkicks him to the floor. Nick follows with a suicide dive. Moloney mows down Matt with a running shoulder block. Moloney takes him over with a Frankensteiner. Matt responds with a headscissors. He moonsaults off the apron onto Moloney. Styles and Seven trade forearm strikes. They land stereo rolling clotheslines. Matt drags Seven out. Styles follows with a baseball slide. Bate airplane spins Matt. Nick tries to superkick, but Bate catches him and Giant Swings Nick at the same time. Moloney then gives Matt a TKO onto Nick. Styles decides to go for a springboard, but Seven yanks him down mid-move. Matt finds himself alone with all of Fight Club: Pro. He pokes them in the eyes and throws a flurry of punches at them. Matt then eats two superkicks and a bicycle kick at the same time. Fight Club: Pro then “too sweet” each other. Seven calls for “More Cash for Your Stache.” Matt moves out of the way. Moloney gets superkicked out of the sky. Seven comes off the top with dropkicks to Nick and Styles, landing with a senton onto Matt. Seven gives Matt a dragon suplex. He goes for a piledriver. Styles stops him with a Pele kick. Bate headbutts Styles in the stomach. The Bucks double superkick Bate . Nick tornado DDT’s Moloney on the floor. Styles gives Bate the Hollow Point. The Bucks hit Bate with the Meltzer Driver for the pin at 7:06. Fight Club: Pro have to be considered the breakout stars of this year’s tournament. Their instantly likeable personalities shined through, as did their exception wrestling talent. They had consistently great matches with a variety of opponents. CHIKARA, or any promotion for that matter, would be foolish not to use them. ***½
The Gentleman’s Club are in the back. Chuck Taylor introduces everybody. He tells Swamp Monster he hates his guts. Every time Chuck tells him to do something, he doesn’t do it. He tells Swamp Monster that if he touches Jervis Cottonbelly he will literally murder him in front of everyone. Drew Gulak thinks that is harsh. Taylor tells Crown & Court that they’re coming for them.
Challenge of the Immortals
Crown & Court (Princess Kimberlee, Jervis Cottonbelly, & Los Ice Creams (El Hijo del Ice Cream & Ice Cream Jr.)) vs. The Gentleman’s Club (Chuck Taylor, Orange Cassidy, Drew Gulak & The Swamp Monster)
Dr. Colonel Nolan Angus is in the Gentleman’s Club’s corner. Cottonbelly wants a hug but Taylor refuses. He kicks Cottonbelly in the stomach. Cottonbelly catches him with a hug as Taylor comes off the ropes. He then drop toe holds him and locks for the Downton Lock. Taylor immediately grabs the ropes and hits the floor. Cassidy rolls into the ring. Jr. comes in. Cassidy rolls onto his shoulders and comes off with an armdrag. Hijo comes in and is sent out with a headscissors. Cottonbelly and Kimberlee look to pull him up, but Cassidy takes them both over with wrist drags. Los Ice Creams toss him into the corner. Hijo monkey flips him into elbow drops from Cottonbelly and Kimberlee. Monster breaks the pin. He pinches Hijo’s butt, then sends him out with a satellite headscissors. Jr. also takes a headscissors. Kimberlee enters. She thinks Monster is cute and fluffy. She pets him, then offers her hand for a kiss. Monster rejects it, and instead kisses Cottonbelly’s hand! He then tags in Cassidy who double axe handles Kimberlee. Taylor gets in a few stomps as well. They double back elbow Kimberlee and then hug. Monster comes in and meets Cottonbelly for a hug. Los Ice Creams decide to hug each other. Kimberlee is quite angry. Her and Gulak break up all the hugs. Gulak wants to know why he is always the third wheel. Gulak and Kimberlee aggressively trade control on offense. Kimberlee grabs the ropes to stop an ankle lock. She sneaks in a few different pinning combinations but Gulak escapes them all. They fight for a vertical suplex which Kimberlee eventually wins. Cottonbelly hip attacks Gulak in the corner. Taylor kicks Cottonbelly from the apron. Cottonbelly knocks him off. Gulak slams Cottonbelly onto the ring ropes. Cottonbelly is isolated from his team. Taylor misses a top rope moonsault, but unlike Night 1 he lands on his feet. However, Cottonbelly does give him a belly-to-belly suplex. He fights off Gulak and Cassidy. Taylor throws him out and Kimberlee comes off the top with a flying Frankensteiner. Monster punches her in the stomach and throws her out. He looks to dive but Los Ice Creams cut him off and throw him out. Gulak low bridges the top rope to send Los Ice Creams to the floor. Cottonbelly sends Gulak out with everyone. Cassidy kicks Cottonbelly and tosses him out. Cassidy calls for a dive, but instead rolls to the floor with everyone. Taylor carefully headstands into a senton onto the pile of people outside the ring. In the ring Hijo stops Monster’s superkick. Monster comes back with a Rock Bottom. He pulls off part of his slime, setting up for the People’s Elbow! Hijo cuts him off with the Cold Stone Stunner. Cassidy chokeslams both of Los Ice Creams at once after spitting orange juice in their faces. Cottonbelly rock-a-bye’s Cassidy into a side suplex. Gulak breaks the pin and throws Cottonbelly out. Kimberlee gets in some strikes to Gulak. He rolls under her leapfrog and sunset pins her for two. Gulak whips Cassidy into Los Ice Creams. They boot Cassidy in the face, then send him up onto Gulak’s shoulders. Cottonbelly dropkicks Gulak in the back, causing him to powerbomb Cassidy. Cottonbelly puts Gulak in the Downton Lock. Monster tries to save him, but Taylor throws him outside! Los Ice Creams assist Kimberlee with a huracanrana for the pin on Taylor in 15:28. Crown & Court are no longer in last place in the Challenge of the Immortals! This was really fun, and I had a big dumb smile on my face for pretty much all of it. My only criticism is I don’t think it was goofy enough. ***
10-Team Gauntlet Match
The Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield & “Mr. Touchdown” Mark Angelosetti) vs. Bee Boy & Genetic Grasshopper
The bug dudes are from Australia, so the internet tells me. After the initial exchange, Hatfield by instinct slaps Boy on the butt, hitting his stinger. Boy takes him down with a headscissors. He and Grasshopper double Japanese armdrag Hatfield into stereo dropkicks. Hatfield wasitlocks Boy into the Romero Special. Angelosetti comes off the second rope with a bulldog for two. Grasshopper blind tags in and dropkicks Angelosetti. He slams Angelosetti, then slams Boy on top of him. Some tandem offense ends with Angelosetti taking a senton, but turning it into a crucifix pin. Angelosetti drives him into the corner and delivers three shoulder blocks. Boy shoves Hatfield to the floor when he looks to charge from the second turnbuckle. Grasshopper and Angelosetti fight on the apron. Grasshopper Frankensteiner’s Angelosetti onto Hatfield on the floor. Grasshopper tries a twisting dive. The Throwbacks catch him, so Boy suicide dives onto everybody. In the ring, Hatfield tries a Jackhammer on Grasshopper. Grasshopper escapes and lands a superkick for two. Angelosetti stops Boy from making a dive. He backdrops Grasshopper to the floor. He takes down Boy with an avalanche suplex. Grasshopper stops the pin. The Throwbacks send Grasshopper bottom first into Boy’s stinger. Grasshopper falls to the End of Weekend for the pin at 6:53.
The Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield & “Mr. Touchdown” Mark Angelosetti) vs. Argus & Mascara Purpura
Hatfield blocks some slaps from Argus. Argus flips out of a wristlock and sole butt kicks him. Hatfield snaps off a couple armdrags, then runs the ropes for a double clutch wrist drag. Argus catches Hatfield with a back elbow and comes off the second rope with a sunset flip. When that fails, Purpura tries one of his own. He then sends Hatfield into a dropkick from Argus. Purpura lands a shooting star press for two. Hatfield slides to the floor after ducking Purpura’s clotheslines. Angelosetti shoulder tackles Purpura. Purpura uses the ropes to get back in the ring. He baits Angelosetti to the floor and fakes a dive. Argus dives off the apron onto Angelosetti. Argus and Purpura gives Hatfield some double team offense. Purpura accidentally dropkicks Argus to the floor when Argus holds onto Angelosetti. Angelosetti spears Purpura. Argus takes a pair of chops, then falls to the End of Weekend at 11:23.
The Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield & “Mr. Touchdown” Mark Angelosetti) vs. Simon Dean & The Blue Meanie
The two teams try playing a game of keep away but the ball ends up on the floor. Meanie, with the ball, shoulder tackles through the Throwbacks as he constantly hits the ropes. Dean and the referee both get in his way. The referee throws a yellow flag on being hit. Dean baseball slides Hatfield on the floor. Angelosetti pecado’s onto Dean. Meanie was going to fly, but everybody scrambles on the floor so he decides against it. Meanie and Dean end up taking control. Dean sends Angelosetti into the corner with his stretch bands. Dean catches him with a Complete Shot coming back. Meanie splashes onto Angelosetti for the pin at 15:55.
3.0 (Scott “Jagged” Parker & Shane Matthews) vs. Simon Dean & The Blue Meanie
Jagged admits he has instant regret asking for a test of strength. Meanie instantly brings him to his knees. They get locked up grasping each other’s fingers, and with the fans encouragement, they have a thumb war. Meanie almost drops at a three count, but looks to fight back. Matthews kicks Meanie to stop the thumb war. Meanie mows down 3.0 with clotheslines. Dean follows suit. He drops Jagged with a neckbreaker, then sends Matthews into Jagged, causing Jagged to DDT his own partner. Jagged sends him face first into the middle turnbuckle for the pin at 21:17. Pretty sure Dean’s foot was on the ropes.
3.0 (Scott “Jagged” Parker & Shane Matthews) vs. Team ATTACK! Pro Wrestling (Pete Dunne & Morgan Webster)
3.0 stomp on Webster and Dunne as they slide in. Webster flips over Jagged to avoid a corner attack and Dunne turns him inside out with a lariat. Webster follows with an imploding senton. Dunne gives him a face buster. Webster hits a 450 splash for the pin at 23:15.
The Osirian Portal (Amasis & Ophidian) vs. Team ATTACK! Pro Wrestling (Pete Dunne & Morgan Webster)
The Portal dropkick Dunne and Webster to the floor and follow with a tope con hilo and suicide dive respectively. In the ring, Amasis dropkicks Webster in the corner. The Portal hit the Slave Initiation for two. Webster slides out. Dunne gets the Portal stacked up on the mat and turns them both over in a stereo half crab. Ophidian gets the ropes to break it. Amasis and Dunne exchange strikes. Amasis cracks him in the face with a knee strike. The Portal bring him down with the Pyramid suplex. Ophidian misses a pescado on Webster. Webster throws Amasis into the top turnbuckle, then comes in with a lionsault block. Ophidian gets on the Death Grip. Webster turns him around into a butterfly facebuster. Amasis breaks the cover. Amasis nails Webster with the 540 kick. Dunne takes Amasis over with a double underhook slam. He enzuigiri’s Ophidian, then pump-handles him into a complete shot for two. Amasis nails Dunne with a forearm shot. Dunne clotheslines both of the Portal. Dunne assists Webster with a tope con hilo onto Ophidian. Dunne dropkicks Amasis in the corner. Dunne helps Webster with a super Frankensteiner, which sends Amasis into a powerbomb from Dunne. Amasis spikes Dunne with a DDT. Webster knocks Ophidian off the top. Amasis and Webster land 450 splashes, but both Ophidian and Dunne got their knees up. Ophidian comes off the second rope with an Egyptian Destroyer on Dunne. Dunne wisely rolls to the floor. Webster bicycle knees Ophidian. Amasis elbows him. The Portal hit a superkick/enzuigiri combo. Ophidiain drops Webster with a Complete Shot off of Amasis’ back for the pin at 31:36.
The Osirian Portal (Amasis & Ophidian) vs. Battleborn (Lucas Calhoun & Missile Assault Man)
Kevin Condron and the Snow Troll are in Battleborn’s corner. The Portal attack Calhoun and Missile with forearms. Missile sends Ophidian out as Calhoun takes down Amasis with a rolling clothesline. Missile powerbombs Amasis twice. Calhoun senton splashes onto him. Condron gets a cheap shot in on Ophidian outside, but Ophidian still stops Missile from launching Amasis across the ring. Missile bicycle kicks Ophidian to stop his momentum. Calhoun Samoan Drops the Portal simultaneously. Ophidian fights off both of Battleborn but succumbs to the numbers game. A pump kick from Missile pins Ophidian at 34:48. Condron grabs the microphone, but the crowd boos and he decides not to say anything right now.
Battleborn (Lucas Calhoun & Missile Assault Man) vs. The Colony: Xtreme Force (Arctic Rescue Ant & Orbit Adventure Ant)
Missile is squared off with his former Colony: Xtreme Force members for the first time since unmasking. Condron demands that his men kill them. Arctic and Orbit yell their names, then attack Calhoun. Missile does not make a move. They yell their names at Missile again. Missile begins to lift his arms, but then uppercuts both of his former partners. He clotheslines Orbit out. He misses a running uppercut on Arctic. Calhoun accidentally splashes Missile. Arctic one legged dropkicks Calhoun. He headscissors Missile to the floor with Calhoun, then dives onto them. In the ring, Missile wipes out both Ant’s with a top rope dropkick. He uppercuts Orbit repeatedly in the corner. He gives Orbit the Missile Launcher in the opposite corner for the pin at 38:59.
Before the next team comes out, Condron gets in the ring with a microphone. He says he had to watch his partners die in front of him at last years’ King of Trios, Calhoun had to witness the murder of deviANT, and now it’s time for Missile to share that experience with his teammates. He instructs Missile to kill his former partners. Missile refuses and yells MISSILE! ASSAULT! ANT! at Condron. Condron shoves him aside and says he’ll do it himself. With that, he gives Orbit the same chokebreaker that Deucalion would to kill the members of the CHIKARA roster. Condron’s face is immediately washed over with disbelief and shock at what he has done. Missile turns away in the corner as Calhoun looks like he is almost in tears. Arctic helps his now deceased partner out.
Battleborn (Lucas Calhoun & Missile Assault Man) vs. The BDK (Nøkken & Pinkie Sanchez)
Sanchez immediately double stomps Calhoun as he comes off the top. He disposes of Condron. Nøkken uranage’s Calhoun onto Missile. Nøkken gives Calhoun a sit-out chokeslam. Sanchez lands a moonsault double stomp on Calhoun for the pin, the win, and his and Nøkken’s third point in 42:53.
From this, we got an interesting storyline with Condron, the death of another character, and a tag team with a title shot. Was this worth sitting through the 35 minutes of boring, pointless wrestling that preceded it? Absolutely not. At least they saved the best for last. ½*
The Proletariat Boar of Moldova says while Lovelace has been traveling around the world, he has been competing in CHIKARA against the best, readying himself for this opportunity. He plans to show Heidi that the Boar is War.
Young Lions Cup
Heidi Lovelace vs. The Proletariat Boar of Moldova
Lovelace has been champion since 12.6.2014 and this is her second defense. Juan Francisco de Coronado is in Boar’s corner while Icarus is in Lovelace’s corner. Boar is receiving this title shot because he pinned Lovelace in an Atomicos match back in May, the last time CHIKARA was in Easton. Lovelace rolls up Boar to block his initial charge. She gets in some kicks to the legs and shots to the stomach. She scales up Boar and bounces off the top rope to get a monkey flip. Boar resists a sunset flip. She blocks a boot and knees Boar in the face. Lovelace tries to drive him face first into the corner. Boar picks her up on her shoulders and drops her ribs first across the top turnbuckle. He stomps on her stomach in the corner. He places Lovelace on the middle rope. Lovelace moves to avoid being jumped on and throws more kicks to Boar’s thigh. Boar cuts her off with a knee to the mid-section. He drops a stomach onto her stomach as well. She fights back with a series of chops and an enzuigiri. She ducks a clothesline but takes a gutbuster across the Boar’s shoulder before being powerslammed for two. He drives his knees into Lovelace’s stomach for another two count. Boar zaps Lovelace’s energy out with a Bear Hug. She elbows her way out. Boar runs into a few boots from Lovelace. She comes off the middle rope with a crossbody. She drives Boar’s head into the middle turnbuckle. Lovelace delivers a trifecta of running kicks to the side of the head. She blocks a Gore with a Yoshi Tonic. Boar kicks out. She goes for the Heidicanrana. Boar picks her up into an electric chair position. He drops her onto her rear end, then nails the Gore when she gets up. Boar pins her, but Lovelace turns it into a crucifix pin for the win at 8:04. The Boar kept his work on the midsection consistent, making for an easy, well told story. I don’t think the winner was ever in doubt, but they did a solid job convincing us otherwise. **¾
Mark Andrews has a lot of compliments for Shynron, but he believes his own future begins tonight when he defeats Shynron for the title of 2015 Rey de Voladores.
Rey de Voladores 2015 Finals
Shynron vs. Mark Andrews
Neither competitor can gain an advantage on the mat. A series of pinfall reversals brings us back to square one. Andrews trips Shynron as he comes off the ropes, then catches him with a Manhattan drop. Andrews snaps off a pair of armdrags, then trips Shynron into a standing moonsault for two. Shynron leapfrogs over Andrews, then uses a headscissors to send Andrews into the corner. Shynron twists into an armdrag, sending Andrews to the floor. Shynron goes for the Leaning Tower of Shynron when he sees Andrews jump to the canvas, but Andrews dropkicks him down to the floor. Andrews then lands on him with a tope con hilo. Andrews switches from a Romero Special into a legdrop. Andrews blocks a kick, but Shynron sneaks in an enzuigiri. Andrews takes to the floor where Shynron comes off the top with a cartwheel plancha. In the ring Shynron ascends to the second rope. Andrews stops him with a kick. He takes him down with a Frankensteiner. Shynron rolls through and gives Andrews a standing Spanish Fly for two. Shynron drops Andrews with a back handspring Ace Crusher. He misses a Phoenix Splash off the second rope. Andrews comes in with a Dragonrana for two. Andrews poises for a shooting star press. Shynron rolls across the ring. He catches Andrews with a boot, then hits the Dragon Twist for two. Andrews avoids a dive. Shynron notices, lands on his feet, and hits a tiger feint kick to Andrews as Andrews stands on the apron. Shynron wants to bring Andrews in with a superplex. Instead, Andrews brings Shynron down with a spike reverse Frankensteiner for the pin at 10:05. This was an excellent high flying exhibition, certainly befitting the tournament’s title. Part of me feels like this didn’t really kick into the next gear, but I also feel like this went the right amount of time, so I can live with it. Shynron holds his Rey de Voladores 2014 plaque as Andrews is given his 2015 version, and a rematch between the two would be set for October in the forthcoming weeks. ***
King of Trios 2015 Final Round
Team AAA (Fénix, Drago & Aero Star) vs. The Bullet Club (AJ Styles & The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson))
Nick boots Drago before punching him down. Drago responds with a sole butt kick and a toreador. He blocks a kick, knees Nick in the face, and sweeps his legs out. Matt pokes Star’s eyes as he enters the ring. Star drop toe holds him onto the second rope. Matt avoids the first tiger feint kick, but his hubris causes Star to hit a 2nd. Star lands a skyscraper armdrag off of Fénix’s shoulder,s frustrating the Bucks, who literally trip over themselves. Styles trips on the top rope, causing the Bullet Club to regroup on the floor. Back in the ring, Fénix calf trips Styles. They each take one another down with Frankensteiners. The Bucks cut off Fénix. Fénix takes down Matt with a Frankensteiner and drops Nick with a back handspring Ace Crusher and dropkick. He enzugiri’s Styles to the floor. Team AAA look for dives but the Bullet Club avoids it. They tease leaving, but AAA give chase. The Bullet Club hit them all with superkicks. Drago is brought into the ring and worn down by the Bullet Club as his partners recover. They do some damage to the tail on Drago’s mask, and Nick mocks Fénix and Star with the Eddie Guerrero shimmy when they come to. Matt joins him as well. Drago rolls out after taking a neckbreaker and knee drop. The Bucks dropkick Star off the apron. They look to double hip toss Fénix, but Fénix runs the ropes, kicks Styles, and takes down the Bucks with a London Bridge. Fénix flips to the apron where Matt superkicks him and Styles gives him the Bloody Sunday. Matt gives Star some punches on the floor while Nick tries pinning Fénix back in the ring. Nick can’t manage to keep him down. Nick wears down his neck. He’s sent out where Matt holds him. Nick goes to kick Fénix but instead he cracks Matt in the face! Fénix sends Nick’s superkick attempt into Styles’ face, then gives Nick his own superkick. Star flies in but the Bucks cut him off. Star flips out of a double hip toss. The Bucks accidentally superkick Styles. Star takes them down with double back handspring elbows. Drago and Fénix land stereo tope con hilo’s to the floor on the Bucks. Star tries Deja vu on Styles. Styles blocks, so Star rolls him up for two. Fénix springboards up for a Frankensteiner on Styles. Styles holds onto him to stop, and the Bucks double superkick Fénix! Fénix however still manages to bring down Styles with the super Frankensteiner. Team AAA then lock all of the Bullet Club in three separate submission holds. Styles, while in Star’s Cristo, frees his partners and then himself by sidewalk slamming Star. Drago eats a trio of forearm strikes in the corner. For the first time this weekend, Styles successfully hits the springboard forearm (on Star)! The Bucks then take care of Drago and Fénix with dives to the floor. Styles drops Star with Bloody Sunday, but Star kicks out! Fénix fights off the Bullet Club on his own. Styles catches him for a Styles Clash. Drago saves Fénix by giving Styles a Complete Shot. Nick superkicks Star, then enzuigiri’s Drago as Matt buckle bombs him. The Bucks set Drago up top. Star dive in, but he eats double superkicks on his way down. They go for Fatality on Star, but Drago dropkicks Nick mid-air. Star headscissors Matt into Styles with a spear. Fénix kicks Matt from the floor. Star splashes him with a springboard plancha. Drago dives onto Styles and Nick. Fénix hits a springboard 450 splash onto Matt to win the match and the tournament at 15:13! What a match. A simple story with crazy, exciting action where it was anybody’s match to win at any time. It was a unique match too, and a huge coup for CHIKARA to gather these six men in one place. Both teams competed so well all weekend, and this was not only their peak performance, but they called back to their previous encounters from the prior evenings throughout the contest. This was one of the best finals in King of Trios history (if not the best) and something worth checking out. Team AAA dedicate the win to Perro Aguayo Jr. ****¼
