Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 6.01.16 – (Season 2, Episode 19) Judgment Day

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Son of Havoc defeated Daga @ 7:03 via pin [**¾]
– Trios Title Match: Champions Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans and PJ Black defeated Prince Puma, Rey Mysterio Jr. and Dragon Azteca Jr. @ 9:45 via DQ [***½]
– Lucha Underground Title Match: Champion The Monster Matanza defeated Cage @ 13:27 via pin [****¼]

– We get the usual video package to kick off the show.

Son of Havoc vs. Daga: They worked a series of quick reversals to begin, Havoc scored with a RANA and sent Daga to the floor. Havoc followed, but ate a superkick for his troubles. Havoc managed to send Daga to the post, and then hit an elbow drop. Back in the ring, they kept the pacing up and that led to a variation on the wheelbarrow suplex from Daga for a near fall. Daga took the heat, spent some time arguing with the ref over the speed of the count, but went right back to work. Daga fought off Havoc, and then locked in the old tequila sunrise. Kobra Moon then made her way out, she was happy to see Daga. Havoc started to make a comeback, hit a back a handspring elbow and then a springboard high cross for a near fall. Havoc missed the double stomp; Daga to the floor and Havoc hit the suicide dive right away. Back in, Havoc went up top but Moon grabbed his foot and distracted him. Daga hit a kick and went up top with Havoc. Havoc sent Daga to the mat and hit the shooting star press to pick up the win. This was a pretty good match overall, but a little disjointed in the middle. Also, I was not a big fan of Moon getting involved, as this has been happening a bit too much this season.

– Post match Moon checked on Daga and then cuddled with him. He did not appreciate this, so Moon hugged his leg like a small child, not wanting their parent to leave. I hope those crazy kids make it.

– We see Rey Mysterio getting in some training backstage. Dragon Azteca Jr. arrives, and notes he found the cage of the monster. They have tension, because Rey says the master did not want them to seek revenge, while Azteca says Rey did not speak with him in years. Prince Puma arrives, and reminds then that they have a match tonight. After some tension, they agree that they need to work together and head out for their match.

Trios Title Match: Champions Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans and PJ Black w/Taya vs. Prince Puma, Rey Mysterio Jr. and Dragon Azteca Jr.: Evans and Black were wearing sunglasses and did the Mundo style entrance with Johnny. The full transformation to unlikable assholes is complete. Rey and Black started things off, good work from both and Mundo then distracted the ref, allowing Black to hit a low blow on Rey. All three worked over Rey for a bit, and then Evans got a standing moonsault for a near fall. Way more work from Rey this week, with the champions getting the heat on him here. Rey finally made the hot tag to Puma, he ran wild and did the northern lights into the power up suplex on Mundo. The faces all ran wild, Azteca hit a sweet dive onto Mundo and then Black with a springboard dive onto Azteca and Mundo. Evans cut off Rey as he went for a dive, but Puma then cut him off. Puma and Evans did a superplex to the pile on the floor to wipe out everyone but Taya. Puma missed the 630 as Black pulled Evans to the floor, allowing Evans to hit a 630 of his own for a near fall. Puma fought back and hit the Bennadryller and both men were down. Azteca and Mundo got the tags, Azteca fought off Mundo and Black, causing them to run into each other and then hit the tornado DDT for a near fall. The pacing is great as it is keeping the crowd into everything, until Taya distracted the ref and Mundo hit the low blow on Azteca. Puma was pissed, and then kicked Mundo in the balls right in front of the ref, for the DQ. It was a really fun match, but if they were gong to have the asshole champions cheat and then do the non-finish, they shouldn’t have had Moon involved like she was in the opener, because it would have felt more important here. The story is that Puma is pissed that they lost the titles, pissed that his teammates were bitching with each other pre-match and then was sent over the edge when the heels cheated again, which broke him and led to the low blow. It also felt that they needed to move away from this and did not want the former champions to lose again, which I get.

– Post match, Rey tried to calm Puma down, but he was too pissed off and superkicked Taya.

– Post commercial, Azteca found the cage of Matanza. Black Lotus was there, and said that he can’t do anything Lotus then said the original Azteca killed her parents, which Azteca did not believe. Matanza growled as Azteca left. Dragon Azteca Jr. needs to realize that he’s only alive because of that cage.

Lucha Underground Title Match: Champion The Monster Matanza w/Dario Cueto vs. Cage: This is also for the unofficial HOSSWEIGHT title. They did hoss spots, but then Cage went LUCHA and did head scissors and arm drags, leading to a big dive. Cage then went to the top and hit a moonsault to Matanza on the floor, unloading with everything to take out this monster and win the title. Total reckless abandon from Cage, brawling on the floor and keeping the advantage until Matanza started to slam him repeatedly into the barricade and then delivered suplexes on the floor. They are doing a good job of keeping the action non-stop and vicious. The crowd was with Cage big time, doing the Terminator stomps for him as he brutalized Matanza in the corner. But every time Cage seemed to take control, Matanza would toss him around with suplexes, tossing around his challenger with ease. Matanza then choked out Cage and also tried to rip his face off. You really have to appreciate these guys, working hoss spots at heart, but also keeping the pacing going so well as we go deeper into the match. Cage hit a German suplex, but Matanza popped up and no sold it. Matanza did the same to Cage, and he no sold it. These dudes kept doing the spot and demanding more until Matanza hit a swinging German suplex to finally put Cage down. That was a wild 30-seconds of fighting hoss spirit. Cage countered the wrath of the gods slam, and then did that ridiculous delayed suplex spot. The top rope elbow scored a near fall. The crowd has been hot all match long, with neither man getting a long heat, just a constant back and forth battle to see who the real monster and champion would be. After working in some good near falls, Matanza fought back with an overhead belly to belly and then a sitout powerbomb for another near fall. Dario was losing his shit on the floor, fearful that his brother may lose as Cage ran of more near falls. Cage then dropped the straps, laid in a series of kicks and then ran into he wrath of the gods slam and Matanza retained. That was an excellent main event, worked exactly how it needed to be. They did a good job of making it feel big time, Cage got a ton and was believable as a challenger and as someone that could possibly beat the Monster. He lost in the end as Matanza was able absorb more than he could, but lost nothing in defeat.

The 411
This was a very good show overall, with a solid open, a very good co-main and an excellent main event. They also set the stage for Puma, Rey and Dragon Azteca Jr to move on to other things, which should be interesting. The one lone question, who in the hell can defeat The Monster Matanza Cueto?
